Wow! Thanks so much.....you know, it's funny because I have been on synthroid for more than twenty years and have been drinking coffe with my meds the whole time! I have stopped doing the other bad things though...like the vitamins, supplements, etc.
I have made my very first endo appt in January and cannot wait to see what happens next! Really appreciate your advice and Mzzchief advice...she has never steered me wrong and is generous with her words as well!

My new physician has prescribed naturethroid, I find out next week if my starter dose of 1 1/2 grains, divided, 1 grain in the am and the other half in the afternoon is correct. He also suggested that if I can't find a convenient time to take it on an empty stomach to place it under the tongue or between the cheek and gum. Sublingual or buccal.

My husband and I have been on synthroid for 17 and 9 years respectively. We have learned:

"Several studies have found that having coffee or espresso at the same or shortly after taking levothyroxine tablets can significantly lower the absorption of the thyroid medication." - Mary Shoman.

Here are all her suggestions:

/a/howtotake.htm

There are some studies out there that recommend taking thyroid medications at night, this seems to be the synthetics, not the natural.

Dear Mzzchief,

I've missed you! Thank you so much for responding to my note earlier......means the world to me.

Well, you sure got me thinking about all of this and I am really guilty I guess of doing lots of things wrong.....I made my first appt with an endo but first available date is mid February....

In response to your questions:
1. I drink a cup of coffee with some fiber in it with my thyroid mess every morning
2. I don't eat but do take vitamins, minerals and fiber with my coffee.
3. I take Miralax in my coffee
4. Calcium in my vitamins

What do you suggest I change? Thanks so much for any advice you can lend to this old girl!

OMG Gator!

Are yo serious? TSH of 11.3?
No kidding that you feel awful how the heck did THAT happen????

Some things you might check:
1. Are you taking your thyroid pill with a full 8 oz glass of water and waiting 30 - an hour before eating?
2. Are you waiting 4+ hours to take any other meds, vitamins, minerals, fiber?
3. Are you having a high fiber, all the vitamins you need in your breakfast cereal?
4. Have you been dosing with calcium supplements or iron?

Just a few things to get you started... you do need to see your doctor... NOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!

Ms Merc!

Hey, sorry just seeing your post now.
I've only been on the synthetics.

But I can generalize enough to say definitively that yes, there are differences in Armour and Naturethroid and those differences are in the binders, excipients and fillers that make up the bulk of our thyroid medications. Different formulas release different amounts of thyroid hormones even though they may all be labeled say 50mcg.

Here's another insight... we have been lead to believe that all medications effect all people the same way 100% of the time. That's simply not true. The same thyroid medication can actually have different absorption rates in the SAME PERSON.... just based on how much water they take with their meds, what they have or don't have with breakfast, if they are on other medications and when they take those.

So if YOU feel a difference between the two medications, then your opinion is the only one that really counts. BC its your body, its your life, its your decision.

Happy Holidays!

Not sure what either are for since my thyroid is hyper and not hypo

I am sure I am not the only one... has anyone switched from Armour to Naturethroid (I did it primarily for cost)? If so, did you notice any differences?
