Thanks, Tee!

I'm glad that Baby Oil works for you.
I've read it creates a persistent film on the skin (this a good thing), which keeps moisture in the skin and is non-comedogenic.

But I tend to shy away from petroleum based products and lotions/oils/potions that are scented, stuff like Baby Oil.

If there's any scent to be added, I like to do it myself with essential oils, so I know exactly what's in there.

But that's me and if Baby Oil works great for you, I don't see any reason to make a change!

The only place I can see mineral oil products becoming a problem is if they are regularly ingested as a laxative.
I've read that they can bind all the great oil based vitamins (K, A, D, E) and oil based antioxidants (things like carotenoids), making them unavailable.

Another great post Mzz. Regarding putting coconut or other lotion on that is not absorbed by skin. Someone gave me a sample packet of lotion to use after swimming. I don't know why I took since I don't like lotion. Well, I put it on, went to kickboxing and lotion ran all over the place. I never had this problem with baby oil.

You might want to try a teeny bit of pure vitamin C powder mixed into your lotion.
You have to mix it in right before you apply it.
If you dump a bunch of C into your lotion bottle, bc it will start working until its exhausted, at which time it will turn yellow and then brown.
You want the C working on your skin, not in your lotion bottle! ha
.
If you decide to use this, be careful about getting it on your towels or clothes, bc it will stain them a yellow brown unless you wash them within a week's time.

If you ever buy a vitamin C product that is brown, don't use it, bc all the antioxidant qualities have been used up.

And of course eating your vitamin C is great, too!

I also love Biosil.
Its a form of silica that's more bioavailable and easily absorbed.
I use the liquid, just put 5 drops in water and down the hatch!
One bottle is about $25 but it lasts several months.

Its also a good idea to get enough protein.
As Tee mentioned, fish is an easily digestible good source.

As for oil the best stuff I've found is Mayumi squalane.
it goes right into your skin and leaves no film.
I've used coconut oil before as a skin lotion, and always had trouble with it sitting on top of my skin, winding up on my bed linens and clothes. It might just be my skin doesn't absorb it.. everyone is different and everything doesn't work the same for everyone 100% of the time.

Mayumi squalane is sourced from sharks, if that concerns you, there's other brands that are sourced from olives.
I haven't used anything other than the Mayumi brand, so I don't know if there's a difference.

I'm thinking of trying this olive based one, once the Mayumi runs out:

Thanks MzzChief, Well explained - and I do not want to risk a reaction now that I understand the consequences - as of today I am not going to take the Collagen any longer - checked my dosage of biotin and it is 5000 so I will try and up it to 7500. I won't try the cocoanut oil either. It's has been a difficult ride but it could always be worse. Any other suggestions would be welcome. It's so nice to get information from people who "have been there and done that".

I am happy coconut oil works for you Elseebee. I stopped using this oil to cook bc it raised my triglyceride level. I always used a little baby oil at the end of my shower, swim daily and never had skin or nail problem. People are always asking my secret to young looking skin. I don't have one. I was raised eating a variety of veggies, fruit, fish and continue to do the same.

Thanks HIPPIEGURL. I have been meaning to give biotin a try but did not know what strength to take. Facebook thyroid members recommended biotin too.

HI Meli!

Yes, Grave's is a mistake of the immune system, too.
Only things go to the hyper side in Graves rather than the hypo side.
Most of us here are hypo (hashimoto's thyroiditis), although in some cases we are unlucky enough to experience both.

I am sorry you had to deal with that, from what I've read here and elsewhere, its no walk in the park.

While you don't have a thyroid to attack... you still have the same immune system you had when you had Grave's.
One autoimmune disease means a greater potential to develop another type of autoimmune condition, than someone who never had Grave's.
Because its not your thyroid, its your immune system.

Then again, maybe not.
You might be able to take this product and not have a problem.

There's no way to tell, but I do think its a risk you take
Which is why I felt obligated to point this out.

I think that weight gain is a highly individualized thing, without knowing the people who said they experienced gain on this collagen supplement, its hard to pinpoint if its the supplement or something else they are or aren't doing and using the supplement as a scapegoat. BC lets face it, if you have a thyroid issues, you don't lose as fast as Normals, you gain easily.

My concern would be less about weight gain and more about this collagen product triggering an autoimmune reaction somewhere in my body. Bc once the autoimmune crazy train starts, there's no stopping it.

I will also check out the coconut oil - it's a shame the callogen tablets would have been easier and cheaper

This is just an observation based on personal experience. My Dr told me to take 5000 mcg of biotin for hair & nails. I took it for a year and noticed nothing. Upped it to 7500 mcg and very shortly noticed an improvement. My hair is now thicker and my nails longer an thicker.

May I add a suggestion for your skin and nails? I have struggled for a long time with the condition of mine. A few months ago I had read enough about coconut oil that I started using it extensively in my cooking. Then I read about oil pulling for the mouth, so I used coconut oil there. One day I had some left on the spoon and decided, why not try it on my skin. OMG! I have stopped using anything else for moisturizing and my skin is beginning to "regress" to what it looked like 40 years ago! I now keep a jar on my sink and use it after a shower and before I go to bed. Of course it gets all over my nails, too, and guess what- they have finally started to grow and no more splitting! Coconut oil is not "cheap" but it is much less expensive than all the moisturizers I've bought over the years.

Thanks for all the research MZZCHIEF! From your list of 6 below I do 5 without thinking. However, I do love the sun - I've cut back somewhat but it is something my body craves and it is a craving I cannot ignore. I'm a real bear in the winter! You mentioned in your first post comments about our thyroid and auto-immune conflict. I have no thyroid - mine was removed as soon as my first symptoms started - I had an aggressive case of Graves Disease or so I was told. Without a thyroid would I have the same auto-immune conflict and is that what would cause weight gain? You seem so well informed on all things thyroid - thanks again.

PS
What I have found helpful for skin/nails is:

1. Staying out of the sun, or wearing a wide brim hat and sunscreen, protective clothing, sunglasses if you are.
2. Staying hydrated
3. Making fruits and veggies the mainstay of my diet
4. Eating lean protein every day
5. Fish oil, Biosil, Vitamin C and D, B vitamins and Biotin
6. Wearing gloves while doing yardwork or cleaning

hi Meli!

My understanding is that collagen taken by mouth is broken down by enzymes in the gut, and absorbed as amino acids just like any other protein... collagen is a long chain protein, so its not absorbed intact.

So I did a little research, to improve my understanding, and came up with this article, that discusses a form of lab created collagen that can be absorbed intact, bc its been broken up into smaller fragments, "pro-collagen".
These collagen fragments do not exist in nature, but please read the article in this link to get all the facts:

www.prevention.com/beauty/ski
n-care/do
-collagen-supplements-work-an
y-bet
ter-wrinkle-creams

My concern would be that the etiology of most people's thyroid dysfunction is autoimmunity.
What that means is that there's nothing wrong with our thyroids.
There's something wrong with our immune system... we have an autoimmune disease, the target just happens to be two substances in the thyroid TPO and Thyroglobulin.
Autoimmunity is when the immune system mistakenly identifies a protein created by our bodies as an invader.
And responds by creating antibodies specific to our native proteins to target and destroy them.
This is an ERROR of the immune system.

Now back to your collagen tablets...
If scientists have found a way to circumvent the digestive system's filter, by making a product that gets past it, in effect what's happening is a form of leaky gut.
You've got a protein molecule that does not exist in nature, or anywhere in your body, floating around in your blood.
Leaky gut, childbearing, celiac (gluten)disease... all situations where protein molecules that are not native to our body are found in our blood stream... are risk factors for autoimmunity.

Which may be why the reviews of people with thyroid disease gain weight and don't have the same results as those people who don't have an faulty immune system, the way most thyroid patients do.

I also noticed there's Calcium Ascorbate in the formula, which is non-acidic form of Vitamin C .
www.gnc.com/youtheory-Collagen-Advan
ce
d-Formula-Type-1-2-3/product.jsp?proR>ductId=12949404

I've read about Calcium Ascorbate, being helpful for dogs with hip dysplasia, so in my opinion it might be better to invest in pure Calcium Ascorbate instead, since L-Ascorbic acid sometimes is too acidic and causes some people stomach upset. Or simply include fruits and veggies that contain Vitamin C bc they come packaged with so many other good things.

Vitamin C is necessary for forming collagen. Its also critical for the health of your Adrenals.

So those are my thoughts, and the basis for them.

youtheory™ Collagen Advanced Formula, 390 Tablets

I have been struggling w/weight since my thyroid was removed over 20 years ago. In the past two years I have become aggressive in exercise, cardio and watching my calories. The weight is coming off very slowly and inches are changing from fat to muscle. However, my nails, skin and joints are now giving me issues. I saw the above supplement at Costco - saw the rave reviews and decided to try it. When browsing pros and cons I saw most people say they have had great results with the supplement BUT it causes weight gain and people on thyroid medication seem to have the most negative results. I do not want any more obstacles! Does anyone have feedback for me? Thanks so much
