Exactly!

The hair falling, was new hair pushing out the hairs in Catagen and Telogen.

Ironically it's often the first medication that you take, that gets blamed for the hair loss. The second medication, gets all the credit for regrowing your hair, if we switch medications after a few months.
When they are both doing the same thing... restarting fresh hair growth!

I went thru this too. Just awful, bc my hair is quite long, and regrowing to its former length took about 4 years. To make matters worse, I'd get patchy hair loss with an itchy scalp, the areas where the hair was lost, the scalp would get shiny.

Just charming. NOT! ha

I too lost a lot of hair when I first began taking Levo. My hair was half as full as it had been, and it was always on my shirt, in my car and the amount on my hairbrush scared me. After about 6 months of Levo, I noticed it beginning to grow back in. Little tufts of hair sticking out of the crown of my head. What a relief! Hang in there, it should get better. If not, definitely take the issue to your Dr.

Thyroid meds like Levothyroxine, Synthroid, Armour, actually stimulate hair growth.

When you're short on thyriod hormone, anemic, in perimenopause, doing chemo, or in a chronically stressful health situation, bringing your thyriod hormone levels back to a healthy range can reset the growth cycle of your hair. For some people this means hairloss, before things start improving again.

There are 3 stages in hair's growth cycle. Anagen, the growth stage, which lasts anywhere from 2 yrs. or longer and determines how long your hair can grow. Catagen which lasts about 10 days, where the hair root disconnects from the blood supply and nerves and forms a bulb. Telogen, which lasts about 2 months, where the hair is resting in the follicle, until it's either pushed out by a growing hair, pulled out by shampooing or a hairbrush.

It's important to get adequate protein, biotin (5mgs), silicia, iron in order to ensure hair growth.

Regrowth takes time and patience!

My hair started falling out before I ever knew I had any thyroid problems. After the TT, I was started on Levo and actually thought the problem was better. Two months later I was switched to Synthroid because I had cancer. Now my hair is falling out again. I go back to the Endo next month. We shall see what she says.

Levo is known to cause hair loss, though usually just when you first start taking it. However, it might be affecting you differently. You might want to ask your dr if you can switch to desiccated thyroid meds(Armour, NP Thyroid, Nature-Throid, Westhroid). They contain dried porcine thyroid and are very similar to what our own thyroids produce.

I ran out of levothyroxine and haven't been in to a new Dr to get the blood tests and so on. I have the appointment coming up this month, so that will be taken care of. But, I noticed that in the past two-three weeks, my hair is NOT falling out. Rather it is feeling thicker and looks better. Does levothyroxine cause hair loss? I know hypo can cause hair loss, but I never imagined the medication also caused hair loss. When I was taking the meds, my hair was coming out in tufts, I couldn't cook a meal without tying my hair up tightly, I wore my fallen out hairs on my shirt to work- so embarressing. It was really bad. Now, nothing, a few strands in the morning are coming out but that's it..
