No doubt all those antibiotics for so long, allowed the yeast/candida to flourish.
Its a fairly common side effect of prolonged antibiotic use.

Hope you will start feeling better soon!
Perhaps with spring and the warmer weather, a different protocol of diet and medication.

Hi Appealstome,

The ways I know I have Candida are:

I have quite a few of the symptoms:
--Food cravings especially for carbohydrates or sweets
--Menstrual problems
--Dry, itchy skin or hives
--Fungus on the heels of my feet and tips of my fingers, attacking the roots of my hair--causing hair loss.
--Joint pain
--Allergies…air-born and food-related
--Malabsorption (indicated by vertical grooves in fingernails)
--Itching or redness in body creases
--Acne on face
--Adrenal and thyroid problems
--Hemorrhoids, fissures
--Chronic fatigue
--Feeling cold and shaky
--Poor memory
--Puffy, dry and burning eyes
--Premature ageing
--Chemical sensitivity
--Blood sugar imbalances
--Gums Receding

Also I've taken a blood test: Candida antibody panel (IgG, IgM, IgA)

About 4 years ago I started developing infections in my hair follicles all over my body. The old doctor never caught that my thyroid wasn't functioning. So he just kept giving me antibiotics for over a year, every two weeks!!! So non-functioning thyroid meant my immune system wasn't working and the infections kept coming. My new doctor said I was exposed to mold or fungus somewhere along the line and since my immune systems was "in the crapper" as the doc put it, there was nothing to fight off the infections. The bad bacteria in my gut was allowed to proliferate with all the antibiotics and infections.

I have had a VERY stressful life with being in an abusive marriage, taking care of elderly parents physically and handling their medical care and finances. (I also have children, but they are the sunshine in all this.) All this stress has contributed to the Candida having a hay day in my body.

Yes garlic is good. Unfortunately my situation is so bad she has decided to try anti-fungals along with the strict diet and supplements.

How do you know you have Candida? I heard garlic is good to rid Candida. I hope diet works and you feel better.

IVORYGIRL,

I was falling asleep for 5 hours after taking Armour and my free T-3 level was high. I fell asleep in exam room too. Endo said I was hyper and lowered Armour dose a few times a week. The reason my free T-3 was high is bc I took the medication prior to blood test because I woke late. I usually wait 3-4 hours after taking Armour to test since T-3 is always highest for few hours after taking.

The Candida is so bad I cannot have: Sweets, breads, pastas, rice, cereals, crackers, flour, fruit, dairy, corn or beets.

What I do eat:

---Protein: Eggs, organic turkey bacon(no preservatives), organic turkey lunchmeat(no preservatives), chicken, grassfed beef, organic hot dogs(very occasionally), nuts, seeds, ground flaxseed.

---Veggies: Romaine lettuce, kale, green/red/yellow peppers, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, radishes, carrots, cherry tomatoes, onions, avocado, spinach, red cabbage, zucchini, eggplant(very occasionally).

I can have very sparingly: sweet potato, quinoa, and legumes (1 of each/1 time per week).

I take enzymes with all my food, high count probiotic(non-dairy, no fillers), olive leaf, oregano oil.

Vitamins: Liquid B-Complex, Liquid Vitamin D-3, Magnesium, Iron

Trying Milk Thistle very soon.

APPEALSTOME,

Why is the doctor having you take a lower dose every other day? Why not the same amount everyday? That would reek emotional and physical havoc with me.

I can try splitting Armour again, but found this method did not work in the past. I have Addison (no cortisol) and read that low cortisol can cause the symptoms I have been experiencing. I find out blood test results when I see doctor on Friday.

I had same problem Ivorygirl. Trainer instructed me to drink some milk or eat yogurt ( Greek with no more than 10 mgs of sugar) before working out since body/muscles need the sugar. I eat protein within hour after workout. If you are going to eat veggies make sure to pair with protein.....celery with hummus, apple with nut butter or cheese, etc. Frankly, I never found sunflower seeds to be filling even when paired with veggie or fruit. The ratio is two carbs to one protein. A high protein, low carb diet left me too tired to exercise or dizzy afterwards. Books I read explained that person that does as much exercise as I do, needs carbs. Carbs are also important for proper thyroid and adrenal function. Our adrenals get stressed when exercising. Veggies did not cut it for me. So I added a carb ( pc of toast, cottage cheese, banana, etc) for breakfast and one with lunch. Rice or no starches for dinner. I also found eating fruit with meals squashed my carb cravings. I eat a large mixed veggie salad with white meat chicken or turkey for lunch, which does not cut it. Adding a small amount of rinsed canned beans or croutons to my salad works for me. Rice and beans are slow carbs and good for thyroid/adrenals. 3/4 cup of beans = 1 oz of protein found in meat. So you have to eat a lot of beans to get the same amount of protein in 3-4 ozs of meat.

I eat a egg white veggie omelet with toast and banana for breakfast. Greek yogurt with fruit for snack. Salad or 90 calorie wrap with veggies, meat, cheese with mustard and fruit for lunch. Fruit and string cheese for snack. Protein with 2 cups of veggies and sometimes rice for dinner with pc of fruit.

You will need to try different things to see what works best for your body.

I've had to split my dose whether taking Armour or Compounded. And I have to take it on time too or I get fuzzy headed, anxious, and irritable.

I'm on day 5 of the high protein/low carb diet. I thought I was going to binge out on carbs at one point, but I ate some protein and it subsided. It's always after I exercise the cravings intensify. But day 5 has felt more like day 500. The challenge is to keep the fresh veggies cut up. I usually prepare lettuce, green peppers, cucumbers, red cabbage, broccolli, cherry tomatoes, radishes. I add sunflower seeds and sometimes nuts to it. I found turkey bacon and turkey lunchmeat that have no preservatives in them so sometimes I put one of those in the salad too.

Thanks for the information Mzz. I feel awful if I eat beans for lunch, but don't have a problem eating for dinner. Black beans are suppose to be the best and easiest on stomach and fine for me. I ate some black eyed peas and lima beans with dinner yesterday and was okay. I ate a lot of beans for dinner growing up, but hardly eat them now.

My doctor told me the T-3 portion of Armour only lasts 3 hours, which is why patients feel and do better taking medication twice daily. My irritation, etc. occurs in the afternoon or night. I tried splitting and taking medication twice daily and it did not work. My T-3 is always high when I do blood draw within 3 hours of taking test and normal or low when I test 4 or more hours after taking medication.

My friend that took compounding med switched to my doctor. My doc told her she does not know how to regulate compounding, but tried. It was disaster and my friend was switched to Armour last month. I am considering seeing a specialist that does not take ins if I can work out transportation issue.

I got in trouble for my attitude yesterday and put sign on refrigerator to breathe, walk, etc when I am in that mood. I am a meek and mellow person and dislike the change.

Hi Tee!

About beans... I for one can't eat them, they give me foot and lower leg cramps. I have the same problem with corn, blue corn is the worst. Who knew?

But my situation is VERY rare, most people do just great with beans.

Beans are a wonderful source of fiber and protein, in addition to being a inexpensive protein source that is less intensive on animals and the environment than flesh. The more colorful varieties also have high antioxidant value, adzuki beans being the highest according to my research.

While all of that is wonderful... if your body can't handle them... then they're a terrible choice.
it doesn't matter if they're great for everyone else, bc you are you.

With that in mind...IMO the best thing to do is experiment.
Pay close attention to how your feel whenever you introduce a new food, herb, medication, whatever, into your diet. Both good AND bad.

About the low Armour days....

Tee it seems as if your problem is T3 related as it the T3 portion of Armour whose half life is only 24 hours. The T4 in Armour lasts anywhere's from 5-10 days depending on the individual, but Armour has a good deal of T3 in it. So some days, you are not feeling optimal, bc there's a swing.

As I see it, you have two choices.
1. Go back to your doctor.
Ask for a customized dose so that you are getting the same amount every day. They may need to compound it. Or you can try breaking pills in half or quarters to get your dose. That's what I do.

2. Modify your emotional responses on low days.
Now that you are aware you have emotional challenges on your low thyroid hormone days, when confronted with a stressful situation:
~ consciously remind yourself its a low hormone day,
~step back, separate yourself from your negative emotions.
~remember who Tee is (kind, smart, supporting)
~ use your will to stay true to your self... to act the way you would, if you were not under the influence of low thyroid.

We can't pick our initial reaction, but we can choose the emotion that follows it.
With practice we can shorten the time between reaction and emotion, making our lives and those around us so much more authentic and productive.

With practice you will find this go from being a chore, to become almost a game... finding your true self when deluged with stress, and keeping yourself centered despite it, acting from your true self instead of the false self.

If you need some help a low dose (like 100mgs) of L-theanine might help you on your low days.
Look it up on Google before trying it.

Good luck Ivorygirl. I like cooked spinach and kale.

I read not to eat beans if you can't eat soy. Is that true Mzzs?

What do you take with Armour that helps reformulated Armour work better Mzzs? I thought it was a little sugar, but unsure.

I am tried, agitated, hungry, etc. on days I take lower dose of Armour. And fine on days I take higher dose. I go ballistic when some asked me question and argue with people on low dose days too. I hope labs show thyroid level is low and increase in med is warranted. I am worried about my blood sugar too on those days since I crave/ eat carbs non stop.

Back to high protein, low carb diet in an effort to get rid of the Candida. I've started a different probiotic, Custom Probiotics www.customprobiotics.com/ ; I'm using the 11 strain powder (starting at 25 billion cfu and working my way as high as I can tolerate), and implementing the rest of the protocol recommended on the website.

I have a doctor's appointment in 2 weeks. I'm looking forward to getting an update on my thyroid health; I want to see if the little bit of extra T3 in the compound formulation has been beneficial for me and having a complete physical to include the readings on the Candida.
