I have been on Nturthroid for one month now after 4 months of hell on the new Armour. I am definately better, but not great!

On the new Armour, I lost lots of hair and it just stopped falling out, I have scalp psoriasis that is pretty persistant, difficulty losing weight, and I lost a pregnancy as well, still have fatigue in the afternoon but not as bad as before. The muscle aches are also gone. My blood tests did not indicate there was a prblem my TSH was still suppresed but my T3 was on the higher end and my T4 was very low, so it looked like my body was having trouble absorbing.

All I know is that I went from feeling happy and good to crashing. So frusterating. I called Forest and filed a complaint and they followed up on that call so do call them! maybe we'll get our old Armour back.

I recently asked my PC to prescribe armour for me because I was still very symptomatic on my levo/cytomel 25mcg combo, despite an overly suppressed tsh. She started me on the 60mg dose.

I had so many side effects after 4 days I had to reduce my dose. I had a knot in my stomach the whole time I was on it, and I just felt weird. I got a rash on my hands and felt like my heart was beating hard, and at night, OMG! Insomnia, head aches, bad dreams.
When I went to my endo my tsh was 4.6,
Wow in less than two weeks I went from .02 to a 4.6.

I know this was the new formulation armour, because it tasted like chalk and some of you posted that it used to be sweet. It actually tastes very similar to the generic cytomel I was taking. YUK!
If this is what your all experiencing, WOW. I feel for you, that stinks to have been on armour for so long and now have to start over tweaking your Med's again.
I guess I will have to stick to the synthetics for now, but found out from my endo that generic synthetics may not work as well as the name brand.
And oddly enough when I switched to the brand name cytomel it tasted sweet, not chalky like the generic cytomel. Hmmm.. Makes you think doesn't it?
I hope they get it worked out. It may not have worked for me but we need options. Just think about how many types of anti-depressants Dr.'s have to use to treat people because we are all different.

I do agree we get attached to our Med's, but It's because we fear the next ones might be worse.

As Dori would say "JUST KEEP SWIMMING, JUST KEEP SWIMMING!!"(from Little Nemo, I have a 5 year old.)
That's my new motto!
Hang in there all.

"God Bless my online Friends!"

They were made so perfectly to begin with and we really notice when things start breaking down. If you are not a member of the team "Dealing with Depression" you should check it out. Sad news dizzziness is comming back could'nt barely funtion today naturethroid is my only choice now unless armour ever changes back.
back to the doc i go but i'm supposed to do early labs tomorrow can't live with the dizziness dangerous driving and i have to lay down till it subsides i felt like a car with no gas i had to make another try at it but i wanted to make sure i'm medically moniterd long story anyway thought i would share plus i even had to chew it a little before drinking it down it helped for a few days then my tummy was itching how weird well i'm not playing around with that gotta take care of me so the people who count on me can count on me.
i'm sad but moving on with naturethroid i really and wishing it's my levels, that are off not the armour but i'm not gonna mess around.

i was in the store earlier which i got in and out had to get stuff for the family, the grocery checker noticed i had surgery and she new all about it ,she had had rather extensive thyroid surgery and even had some other things removed that could'nt be helped she showed me her scar which was barely visible let me no to hang in there it gets better it had been two years since her surgery she said she is on 275mcgs synthroid and shared some other things that i could really relate with, what wonderful ways god works in are lives when we are feeling discouraged, she was very kind i'm usally covering up my scar somedays, i don't care, because being alive and here and breathing is whats a true blessing and i'm so greatful for.
I have got to be honest some days the depression is awful ,I had depression issues before thyroid issues so i can't say it's all thyroid but my patience is running out i 'm gonna start a low dose anti depressant no matter what i eat or what exercise i get the fatigue from it is'nt healthy I ca'nt live like that i'm treating my depression i'm scared not to and they aren't forever i don't think it's that or i lose it.
i know alot of people who are not for them on here but i'm taking care i have lost so much due too not taking them the last few months Feel like i got boxer gloves fighting the fog and despair thats no way to live it's not all thyroid for me.

I'm on synthetic thyroid hormone replacement since 4 years (150 µgr. at the moment) but I'm considering switching to natural dessicated hormone replacement (i.e. Armour).
Well, I wouldn't even know about the existence of Armour and the other natural replacement drugs if I hadn't discovered Mary Shomon's website and this Spark team !
I already went to three different endo's and neither of them ever told me about the possibility of using natural thyroid hormone replacement !
I get very little information from the doctors/endo's so I try to read up on the American sites as much as I can (no information whatsoever on any Belgian website so far !).
I managed to get a hold of a dozen addresses of pharmacies that sell Armour in Belgium but with all the commotion lately about the availibility, I'm not sure what to do now. Should I wait until the situation regarding Armour is clear again ?
I don't know anyone in Belgium who uses Armour and I don't have a clue as to how to get in touch with people who do since there are no sites available to us.
I'm not feeling too bad on the meds I'm taking at the moment but I can't really remember how I felt before my thyroid was underachieving ! I was struggling with symptoms for three years before I was diagnosed and that was four years ago ! And I'm still not totally free of syptoms !
The only thing I can do is ask my endo for a switch and see how she reacts. I can't imagine why the endo's are so secretive about the different kinds of treatment ! They are supposed to do what's best for their patients, aren't they ???
It'll be a while before I can get an appointment so I will have to be patient (not my forte !).
In the mean time, extra info from Armour users would be very helpfull !
Thanks !

well i'm back on the armour because the naturethroid i'm just not sure was for me but i won't shut the door on it either.
I wanted to share that the armour pills are different sizes i compared new 60 of new formula to older of the new formula from april well thats strange but my new 2 60's that i take were more compressed i wonder if there was an error in the making I'm feeling great again and better than i did on naturethroid plus my insurance covers armour not naturethroid double plus i wanted to share that i also am gonna check my lot numbers on the 120's that i have they were the ones i was taking too when i really got a bad reaction.
i pray i continue to do well so far so good i will do labs in 4 and half weeks I got energy and don't fall asleep when i shouldn't and my eys are not puffy i hope this continues I will share my labs and those lot numbers when i get them together and give them to someone there can be manufacturer mistakes.
even lost the three pounds i gained what a roller coaster i was on last month with the med switchin around even tried levoxly for 5 days bp was up i was irritable and the cytomel gave me a headache i think because they started me on too high to soon with synthetic T-3 with the levoxly but i don't feel like i'm gonna jump out of my skin anymore and energy comming up.

I can not imagine what I would do if I did not have insurance for all the thyroid stuff I have had to go through. I would be in bankruptcy court if I did'nt have it. I wish there was a way I could have given all the prescriptions I couldnt take to someone who could have taken them. Too bad Id be considered a drug dealer then..

KJGETTINHEALTHY~
I think you hit the nail on the head - the doctor my husband and I go to now told us from the start that the thyroid meds such as Armour, Nature-Throid, etc. need to be monitored more closely than the synthetic meds. He explained that for this reason many doctors prefer to try the synthetic thyroid meds first, easier to regulate and monitor.
Honestly, with the hassle's I'm starting to encounter trying to get Nature-Throid, and not doing well on the reformulated Armour, at this point I'm not ruling out trying a synthetic again. I know Synthroid did not work for me, but maybe a different synthetic T-4 plus a T-3 like Cytomel...I don't know.
I do know I want to feel as good as I have the past 6 or so months thanks to Armour and now Nature-Throid, so I won't give up.
Good-luck & Hang in there!

Rissa~

Its not emotional attachment in your case, because of your disclaimer: "until and unless it stops working for me."

What I'm hearing on this Forum, is that some people are having problems with the new reformulation of Armour. Either availability issues or that the reformulated Armour is for whatever reason not working the way it did in the past.

If it stops working for you due to reformulation or unavailability, and you persisted in sticking with Armour, when similar brands are available, then I'd say it was an emotional attachment!

If Armour wasn't workin for you, I'd hope you'd consider another Porcine like Nature-thyroid or Westhroid, which is based on the same principles that Armour was founded on... dehydrated and calibrated pig thyroid.

No sense in going down with the ship when there's other vessels in the water! Well... mabbe if there's stock options offered... haha

I would not consider changing my medication until and unless Armour stops working for me. ;-) Maybe it is emotional Mzz!

I think the danger sometimes is that we are so grateful to be feeling well, that we develop and emotional attachment to our medications.

I'm on 60 mg a day & haven't had problems getting it, but I'm having enough symptoms that I'm just going to have my Dr switch me to Naturethroid. We have to use a mail order pharmacy for our long term meds & I've already checked that they carry it.
It"s too bad that Forest has so little disregard for it's customers.

I just had my blood draw last Tuesday. When I get the call about results I'm going to ask about the other options. We talked about it when I was in there. This is just insane. Way to go Forest.

The article is absolutely true! I tried to refill my Armour last week and was told it was on back order. I had been getting six 30mg tablets to get my 180mg daily dose for about the last year because other strengths had been a problem keeping in stock, and now the 30mg's are unavailable. I printed out the article and took it to my pharmacist, who called Forest and they are going to order plenty of 120mg's to stay in supply for awhile, as that's the only strength available. I can get my endo to give me a script on Monday for 1 1/2 of the 120's daily to keep my dose at 180. I just hope I don't have a problem splitting them.

I just wanted to share the link to an article that might be of great benefit to Armour users. Here it is: http://thyroid.about.com/b/2009/07/28/armo
ur-thyroid-shortage-august-2009.htm?nl=1

I will try to add the link to the topic but just in case it doesn't work you can access it from the link above by copying and pasting.

This is from Mary Shomon so some of you may have seen it already. The link at the end of the article is especially worth a look. At the end of that linked article she talks about compounded thyroid medication. It was very, very interesting. It's definately worth a look if you love Armour.

Have a great day! emoticon thyroid.about.com/b/2009/07/28/armou
