When you enjoy food you do not eat aimlessly but you take ti me to taste what you are eating. You do not overeat this way

I definitely think food is meant to be enjoyed... I love to cook and try new recipes. Tasting the food after I've spent the time creating it and finding out that it's delicious, is one of my favorite feelings. I savor that moment like no other. Just last night I made turkey legs like you'd find at a fair... I never made them before, but I found a recipe online for a brine and then roasted them in the oven. Somehow I managed to cook them to what I considered practically perfection... I can hardly explain the satisfaction I felt. I enjoyed that turkey leg more than anything else I've eaten in the past few weeks, and that's going to stay with me for a while... now as I eat my meals and I want to just keep eating, I ask myself if I'm really truly savoring the flavors or if I'm just mindlessly stuffing it in... and I'll think of that turkey leg and it will remind me of what "delicious" tastes like.

I think food is not only meant to be enjoyed, but to be savored. We used to do this experiment with kids in one class at the alternative high school. We would bring in a nice ripe cantaloupe and have then eat a couple bites. Then we would stop and ask them to imagine how the fruit got to their plate, all the way back to the sunshine and rain that nourished the vine. Then we asked them to take two more bites. Always, they were astounded by how much more delicious and satisfying the flavor was.
Whenever I find myself ending mindlessly, I remember this experience and stop to enjoy the gift of food.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

I've had people tell me the only way to lose weight is to regard food as an annoying necessity to be dispensed with as quickly as possible. I say that's nonsense! God meant us to enjoy food. That's why S/He made so many varieties that taste so great.

Years ago I heard Marianne Williamson speak on overeating and I've always been fascinated by what she said. Unfortunately every time I try to put it into words, I get myself confused. LOL I believe what she was saying was that unconscious eating was in part a denial of the feminine in us - an inability to be receptive as feminine energy is - and take in the masculine - in a constructive way.

Now some people have very different experiences with overeating. So none of this may apply to you and I understand that. However, what she said is meaningful to me.

For instance, I did not become overweight because I loved food or because I enjoyed eating. I became overweight because I didn't like food but I did enjoy numbing out. I didn't enjoy preparing food. I didn't want to do it. I didn't like thinking about what I was going to eat. I didn't really savor anything I ate.

I became fat by eating fast food. Also, by binging on sweets and other foods that would essentially numb me out. I didn't enjoy these foods and if I craved them, I craved them in response to some anxiety, sadness, or depression.

At one point I considered one of those weight loss surgeries where they take out your stomach or bypass it or whatever. I decided against it because it was such a permanent change. Also, to my understanding, there would be foods I would never be able to eat again. Something about that, didn't seem okay. What I wanted was to be able to enjoy my food when all was said and done. I wanted to be okay with my relationship with food.

I enjoy food more now. I cook more. I have my numbing moments but overall me and food are getting along much better these days.

Tonight is Game of Thrones dinner. My son and I will make something special. I set the table and I have flowers and candles in the center. When he was gone, I did this for myself, and now that he is here, he is forced to indulge me.

Tonight we are having some grilled corn ... I think we'll have peppers and onions grilled too .. with some hamburgers and smoked sausage ... like on the sausage and hamburgers... LOL
