Eliza, if I were you, and if you have a Priest that you prefer to go to confession, or just a Priest that you have come to know that you enjoy talking with. I would ask that question, and tell him of your fear, and that you have not been able to overcome that fear, and your current fears with your lady friend who on occasion brings you to Church. I would definitely talk to a Priest about it. I would think someone will be helpful.
I hope you will do that for yourself so that you can feel at peace about it.
Take special care of you.

With love & prayers, emoticon , Janis emoticon

You had inclement weather..

I think you are excused. emoticon

I did not have a car for awhile and the one I have now is old but, I am trying my best to go to mass, a lady friend of mine sometimes takes me but one night, she almost got rear ended and I was in the back seat..last week after mass her car was sideswiped and could not open her car door.. I have a fear of driving due to being in a accident when I was younger so, I wonder is that is that a valid excuse to not go to church in my case?????
I push myself to go to church but, get so nervous and then in mass have a hard time settling down my nerves.. emoticon

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that teaching clearly in No. 2181: “The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants). Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.”

Gravity of matter, of course, is just one of the three necessary conditions for a mortal sin — the others being complete consent of the will and full knowledge of the sinful character of the act or omission. Certain circumstances can excuse one from attendance at Mass on a particular Sunday.

The catechism mentions illness and the care of infants, but others might be: unavoidable work obligations, lack of transportation or inclement weather sufficient to put one’s safety at risk. (To skip Mass to go shopping, to play golf or to get a couple extra hours of sleep clearly does not qualify and shows that other priorities have been allowed to replace the Lord.)

To appreciate the seriousness of the obligation, it helps to understand the centrality of the Mass. From the earliest days of the church, disciples of Jesus have gathered for Eucharist on the first day of each week to mark the day of Christ’s resurrection.

In the Mass, the events of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday coalesce, and those events comprise the core of our faith.

Not incidentally, the Mass also happens to be the one specific way Jesus asked the apostles to keep his memory alive, and the reception of Communion unites us intimately with Christ and strengthens us to live in the manner that Jesus taught.

I appreciate everyone's answers to my question. Our Priest is in his early 40's. Never yet, regardless if we were expecting him to call because of not so nice weather, he always came. He has our St. Joseph Mission which he is the Pastor of, plus St. Anthony Parish, where his Rectory is located. He has to travel 27 miles to our Mission.

Since my Husband felt it was a bad idea to try to start the car at - 21, I was not about to try. The previous morning was very cold, and much later in the morning my Husband started up the car. which groaned some, at that hour it was not near as cold.

I did watch 8:00 A.M. Mass on EWTN. I'm thinking it would not be a sin, but I will go to confession next week unless I'm told it isn't a sin. I am not intentionally missing the weather was not nice. Again though, I don't know if I'd be told it's a sin. I'm definitely not reluctant to go to confession. I grew up, going to Catholic Grade School, and then on to Catholic High School. I feel very blessed with the opportunities I had growing up.

Thank you, Everyone, for your feedback. emoticon

Everyone else has already given great answers - so I will just share an anecdote from my life instead.

We were visiting my sister-in-law and her family out in the country one winter. It snowed Saturday night (a LOT). However, I wasn't worried as I knew that the church was literally just down the street, and we could walk with big boots on. Sunday morning dawned, and I got up early and got ready for Mass. I sat and waited and waited for the others to be ready, wondering if I should get out a shovel to dig out of the back porch so I could walk. My husband was ready next. My SIL got up and said they wouldn't be a Mass. I thought she said that they wouldn't *go* to Mass, so I said that I would go, though, and I didn't mind getting out the snow blower or shovel if that was a problem; that I could help out.

She and my brother-in-law laughed, realizing what I had thought they'd said. They had to explain that as the priest did not live in town, with the giant snowfall during the night, the highway would be closed and he would not be able to get into their little town at all!

That was the first time I ever missed Mass because the priest didn't go!

There are times when you can't make a Mass on Sunday (you're in the airport or on a plane). I doubt the people in the hurricanes or mudslides or other weather events could get to church. And that's assuming the church is open. We have had snowstorms when only the priests who live there could get there. I have visited communities where there is a priest only once a month, and they are lucky to have that.

When I was young back in the 50s we went to Confession every two weeks. On Saturdays the rows of confessional lights were all lit, every church had lots of priests, and there was a line to confess. They don't do that anymore, there aren't enough priests. You do the best you can, you know your own heart. However, that's what confession is for: you discuss it with a priest to sort out your own mind, and receive absolution. See if you can get to a weekday Mass, call ahead and ask if the priest can hear your confession. There are people who commit sin, thinking it's OK as long as they confess, then there are those like you who are trying to lead a Godly life and need the grace of the Sacrament. All you have to do is ask.

I believe you had a valid reason. Maybe you can attend a weekday mass or watch mass on EWTN.

I believe that under those extreme conditions, you would be excused. The church is much more liberal with dispensations for that then they were when I was a child. I know our pastor told us last weekend when we had freezing rain called for to use discretion and to keep safe. I don't think that is a big difference than someone who doesn't go because they just don't want to go. I think that your pastor will tell you that you are excused.

I want to ask opinions on this, as I missed Sunday Mass today.
I get up every Sunday at 6:20 A.M., and this morning was no different. It was -21 below. My Husband usually goes in his own car and I go earlier. Once in a very great while we go together, as I'm involved in ministries in the Church. Sunday Mass is at 8:30 A.M. I usually arrive at 8 in the morning, except when with my Husband. This morning I did not have any involvements in Ministries.
When my Husband saw how cold it was, he said he would not attempt to start my car as he knew there was a possibility it wouldn't start and then the battery gets worn down quickly when it won't start. I decided I would not attempt it either. We had a good part of last week with bad weather, with rain, changing over to snow, and a great drop in temperatures, with icy roads. It's a 5 mile drive to Church, and we live out in the Country. I can't help but think under these conditions, with not the best of roads and - 21 below, if I were to go off the road, I'd be stuck, as I have no cell phone. It probably wouldn't happen but under these weather conditions, is it a mortal sin in missing Mass?
I would appreciate opinions. I do plan to email a Priest who I like to think of as my Confessor. I have such a deep respect for him, but I want to ask you as well what you think.
