Fasting in Spiritual Combat

Our Lord fasted, prayed and did battle. The Christian life is a spiritual combat. Satan is ALWAYS seeking the ruin of your soul. Father gives us a definition of fasting and then explains why we fast - for forty days. (1) It is a great help to avoid sin and all that leads to sin. (2) In order to hunger for God alone. (3) To be a true Apostle. (4) To return to God with our whole heart. (5) Because fasting is divinely inspired! (6) For healing. (7) To defeat the enemy we carry within.
Father further explains how fasting has always been part of our Catholic Tradition and cites Scripture, Saints, and the Church Fathers. We must recover our traditional practice regarding fasting!

Many of my OA (Overeaters Anonymous) friends, including myself, struggle with mindless eating. Some of them have told me that they add "and let this be enough" to the end of their prayers before meals.

I'm like you and also pray for the needs of others at the end of my grace as well.

Here is a piece from a Catholic bloggist. It doesn't give the rules of Abstinance and Fasting but offers insight into the intentions.

Here is what the Archdiocese of St. Louis posted as Lenten regulations.

ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS

"For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him." John 3:16-17

The Church has always helped us fulfill these words of Jesus by prescribing very definite penance for all Catholics, so that we too might have Eternal life. Accordingly, the Pope and the American Bishops have outlined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows:

Ash Wednesday (February 18, 2015) and Good Friday (April 3, 2015) are days of abstinece for all Catholice over the age of 14. On these two days Fast, as well as Abstinence, is also obiligatory for those from teh ages of 18-59. Abstinence means refraining from emat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing in between meals. (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation.

All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply.

We should strive to make all days of Lent a time of prayer and penance.

Let Go and Let God!

Hello all!

Please help me. I cannot find the Church's official teachings on fasting and abstinence.

The Precepts of the Church only mention that we are to follow the Church teaching, but I can't find where it says exactly what we are allowed. I am relying on my guidance from my first confessor who told me in person, but now that he has passed away, and other priests and church workers are placing all sorts of things in church bulletins that seem to contradict what I was taught, I was hoping to see the actual teachings somewhere to show my children, pastors, and students.

Thank you!

For the record, my understanding of the teachings is as follows:

* fast and abstain on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday
* abstain from meat on all Fridays of Lent
* choose (in North America, not necessarily in the rest of the world) to either abstain from meat or another sacrifice or observation on all Fridays on the year

Fasting - no eating between meals, only 1 full 'meal', two smaller 'meals'/snacks that do not add up to the full meal

Abstaining from meat - no beef, pork, chicken, turkey, wild game, or its juices or products, etc. but fish, eggs, cheese, allowed.

Is this correct?

Also, is one allowed to have vegetable broth or tea/coffee between meals? Or just water?
