For the base assesment on the new challenge. Instead of a mile walked, can I do a mile run? I much prefer running to walking.

Thank you for the boost Ann; congratulation on your graduation. I will keep you in my prayers. Graduation is only 1/2 the battle, landing the job is the other. Stay away from the tasty food when you feel really impatient about the call that are going to come.
Leslie: I agree that when a person is happy, they can be at peace with food.
Magdaz; I like that Poland has 12 meals and you said it would be really tiny sample meals. I would just go to Cost-Co and do the try outs and call it good, as a matter of fact that is what I did on Christmas Eve, not intentionally but because I still needed to get a few fruits and a soft robe for my youngest daughter.

It sounds like we all had a very busy December. I am really looking forward to focusing again on my goal. My gift to myself was to rest. I did not plan it that way, it just sort of happened, because of all the business. By rest I mean no real workout. Now I am ready to hit it again.
Ann: I will be sure to make an X next to each day as I complete my personal challenge. so you will know that I did complete it. I am going to add the amount of water I drank for each day and not to go over my calorie limit. I think it is between 1440-1790 a day. I intend to burn at least 2000 calories total a day and take at least 10,000 steps. I usually go over both of those.

My Plate for New Years is
BBQ burger with out the bun
lettuce, carrots, cucumber, mini peppers.
Apple, and pears.
Water Water Water.

Early morning walk with my husband as he delivers his papers. (I missed it on Christmas, because I had a really bad head ache)

100 Jumping Jacks

100 Jump rope
90 ski jumps
80 stairs (run up the stairs, each step counts as 1) I would run up and down my stairs 8 times. I have 11 in my flight of stairs.
70 toe taps on the bench (two risers high)
60 mountain climbers
50 box jumps
40 straddle toe tapes
30 straddle box jumps
20 power jack with 5 lbs weights
10 jack thrust. (three jumping jacks then jump and and tuck your knees to your chest)
not as hard as it sounds, but by the time you get to ten you may want a little rest.

I am ready to start in two days.
Thank you for the nudge

January 1st 2015 workout done.
headed out for a 2 mile walk, to my daughters house and back home again.

GORDON66, MAGDAZ and AWMMA1, you guys are doing such a wonderful job with putting forth an effort to monitor health and fitness habits. I have been very late in responding to everyone. These last 2 weeks have been quite chaotic. I have recently graduated school and have been searching for a job so that I can have income this coming year. No call backs yet, but I know that God will provide. Please keep me in prayer, and please forgive me for my negligence.

GORDON66 - What you just wrote is very true. Our perspectives are EVERYTHING. Not just with fitness, but in life!! Our perspectives can cause joy or depression, excitement or anxiety... it's amazing how powerful our minds are!!! I really hope that you find peace and joy, and that you're able to spread it to those whom you encounter. Really try to make sure that you put that time aside each week. It may be difficult in the beginning, and you may have to constantly remind yourself to do it. However, it will begin to pay off! You will see positive changes, and pretty soon you'll be crocheting without thinking!!

MAGDAZ - Business trips do come with an extra helping of yummy foods that are hard to resist. I can definitely relate and understand your situation. This entire season has been loaded with food and tasty goodies. Anyway, I'm glad that things are slowing down so that you can refocus. Do remember that it's okay to enjoy yourself, though!

Portion sizes are the difference between obesity and normal weight. Amazing right? Cutting down your portion sizes will make a HUGE difference this coming year!! YOU CAN DEFINITELY DO THIS!! That, along with those 15 minutes of exercise each day, will begin to positively affect your health... and most likely, you'll have a side effect of laughter and joy!! Enjoy your family this holiday!!

AWMMA1 - We definitely understand that this season was quite a busy one! It's great that you managed to get those healthier options in for holiday dinner (My mom said that they looked quite tasty lol). It's also great that your husband hooked you up with a tasty meal. I hope that you were able to put your feet up, at least a little bit, and kick back!

I really do like the monthly challenge on your page. I'll have to come up with my own soon. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you've revised your goal and I hope that you're able to complete the next one!! I will definitely be checking in on that, and hopefully we can keep one another accountable! All the best!

My most important goal is to work on being happier. Being happy and positive makes getting through the day much easier, and it's important. We live with ourselves 24 hours a day, and I find inner battles to be energy depleting and counterproductive. When I'm at peace with myself, I can be at peace with food.

...and I need to put aside time each week to crochet for the Prayer Shawl Ministry.

Merry Christmas Everyone. I have been so busy! So sorry I have been out for the past few day. I will say that I have been laying off the holiday food for the most part.
I made some holiday plates for my family, friends, and my husbands students and friends.
The plates had fruits and vegies and a little fudge in the middle. I made some plates for a few business as well. Anyway have had some enjoyment treating people the past few day.

Tonight my husband treated me. He BBQed steak and baked potatoes . yes he baked the potatoes on his BBQ. there were delicious. I will take an after pic so I can post it. I will post a picture of the plates I delivered as well.
Hope every one had a wonderful day.
I did.

So, I had my two healthier options today, which were Herbed Green Beans and Glazed Carrots. They aren't completely healthy, but much better than what we usually eat.

Oddly today, I was actually tired of eating the same thing eat Thanksgiving and Christmas. I mean, why can't these meals be healthy?! Why do we have to eat tons of cakes and cookies and pastas and meats? Anyway, I'm going to do a really healthy dinner next week for new years. I will only cook enough food for that day, and won't fry or overly grease anything.

Today was great. It wasn't about the gifts this year. It was about family, and trust me when I say that the time together this year was THAT much more special when we take away the distractions.

This week has been incredibly busy! So, I'm officially done with everything needed for my master's degree... thesis, paperwork, etc. I've moved back home with my mom and I'm looking for employment. Please pray for me!!

Didn't quite get in 32 ounces of water, but I did get in quite a bit of water. We went grocery shopping to get everything needed for tomorrow's meal. I was supposed to cook my portion tonight, but I'm extremely tired. I just want to sleep/rest. Anyway, I will have pictures posted of my healthier options later on!

It was a busy and difficult week for me. In the end I didn't manage to do the daily challenges for 17th and 18th. I was really tired during the business trip, but at least I did a lot of walking every day.

We had breakfasts, lunches and dinners provided in the hotel and I must admit that we didn't have much choice and no influence on how they made this - I mean especially the lunch and dinner meals.

But I'm catching up now. As far as the challenge for 19th is concerned, I thought on how I can make the coming time a bit healthier.

I really hope to be able to limit my portions. In Poland there is a custom that you should try 12 meals during the Christmas Eve dinner. I intend to make it a really tiny samples eating.

I'll be spending Christmas with my parents and I plan to do a lot of walking in the area where they live. And I hope to have a bit of nordic walking with them as well, just to spend more time together.

And, finally, I plan to do at least 15 minutes of exercise every day.

Yesterday I had 1 healthy meal.
I had a Christmas party to go to and I decided I was just going to have fun so I did.

Today
I have eaten healthy, did not get to do any exercise because I slept until 11: 0'clock. I must have needed the sleep, because I really do not like to sleep all day. I have to much to do to sleep it all away, but as I mentioned I must have needed the sleep.
I was busy busy busy all day. I had 1 slice of pizza and a nice salad for dinner. I had one snack of carrots and apples so I could make it through the day. I did not have a cup of coffee, I can not believe that I made it through the day without coffee and I lived to tell about it.
I have not been doing so well with my challenge, but I am going to leave it up for January and will not change it until I complete it.
I know I can do it, it is just a matter of time. This is a very busy month.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday. I know I will.

With all of the holiday cheer and big dinner menus, your challenge is to somehow make this holiday a healthier one. This includes, but is not limited to, a healthier menu or menu item, limiting/watching your eating, exercising, etc.

Good Evening or Midnight: emoticon

My dinner was sliced red peppers with scrambles eggs and sausage, and cheese. I just mixed it all together.

For lunch I had an apple. (I love apples)
Fresh tomato (I love tomatoes)
sliced turkey lunch meat. (I love that too)

I have to confess that I had chocolate. My students keep bringing me chocolate in small amounts. Yes I did eat some, but not all of it. I did not eat the huge chocolate bar, or the extra large bag of m&m or the very large Snickers Bar. I am saving those for Christmas.
I am going to break them up and put them on a goodie plate to share with people who happen to stop by. That is much better than stuffing it all in my mouth and then regretting it later.
My husband needed me to make fudge for him because all of his friends are asking him if his wife is going to make it this year. I did, and I did it very well. I was able to not consume much more than a few tastes.
I have no idea were I am at with my weight, because my scale quit working. Yikes. I am going to have to buy a new one. I just cannot feel comfortable without something to keep me in check. I feel like I am slowly slipping on my goal without my crutch in (the scale) in the bathroom.

That is all for now. I must go to bed.

Sorry that I did not do well with the healthy eating for the day. It was the best I could do with what is in my frig. I did do 4 100 count downs. I am going to try for at least 4 tomorrow and the gym on Saturday. I have a party tomorrow and the car has an appointment on Saturday. Everyone wants my time that is very limited this month.
Ok I have to go to bed I am very tired. Pillow wants my time got to go emoticon

Gordon66, You're very welcome! I think that we all need this forum. It is definitely helping me to see my problem areas and the things that I struggle with. I'm going to work harder and keep putting forth an effort until I get to where I'd like to be! Also, thanks for posting that recipe. I'm having a dinner for my church members (most of whom are vegan), so I will definitely try this out!!

Didn't quite get in 8 cups of water or enough veggies. I did eat healthy over all though.

12/15/2014

Upon reviewing my overall goals, I did make some very active steps.

Drink Only Water - I didn't meet this goal, but I have been drinking more water than usual. I will admit that I need to drink much more than I am.

1 vegetable/day - I did really well with this goal. Much of this is due to the fact that I don't have much food in the house, yet I have onions, carrots and zucchini. lol

Walk 20 mins or 1 mile each day - I didn't do this each day, but I have walked nearly 7 miles in the past week. This is much more than I've been doing, so I'm quite happy.

Apply for 1 job each day - I have applied for nearly 20 jobs (most of them this past week).

Meditate each day - This goal is COMPLETELY lacking. I didn't really meditate at all, though I did do a bit of praying. I hope to do better with this.

The water intake and meditation are definitely the toughest goals for me to meet. Applying for jobs and being active are much easier. I will definitely continue to press towards meeting these goals so that I may start the New Year off with a BANG!!!

12/16/2014

Today, I completed 3 miles of a walking trail with a girlfriend of mine. We did a brisk walk and took about an hour. It was quite refreshing to be out and about in the midst of the winter season!

Catching up

Dec 14th - I didn't manage to do the challenge :(

Dec 15th - I thought about the big goals. I was happy to state that I'm keeping regular exercises as planned. I still need to be more self-controlled as far as eating of sweets is concerned and more consistent in terms of meal planning. The last weeks, together with he current one, are really busy, and I'm going on a business trip tomorrow, which just throws all my plans upside-down. I'll need to reflect on all this during the weekend again

Dec 16th
I did a 15-min cardio session
I walked for about 25 min in fast pace
I had a lot of walking at work
and I did some hand washing of clothes in the bath tube - that's a real exercise :D

Cheers! emoticon

This is a hard time of the year for making goals that relate to food. I work for an insurance agency, and our office is bombarded with edible gifts from our carriers. Since I can't control what is sent to the office, I certainly can decide what I bring into work. My breakfast and lunch are always nutritious and calorie controlled, but I've found myself habitually making stops at Walgreen's, 7-Eleven, Dunkin' Donuts, etc. I commute to downtown Chicago, so there are lots of temptations within easy walking distance. Heck, I walk up the stairs from the subway, and a 7-Eleven. It's time for me to stop picking up snacks. Let's put it this way. If I weren't spending so much time at the gym, I'd really be packing on the pounds. My trainer is very frustrated with me, and I can hardly blame him.

Getting all my fruits and veggies generally isn't a problem. I eat a lot of salads and my soups, stews, and chilis always include vegetables. More likely than not, I'll add more than the recipe's requirements. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case on Sunday. The family and I went to a fun musical, and we ate at a quasi-food court in Water Tower Place. I chose a barbecued pulled-chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. When I got home, I did make a tilapia and corn chowder and had a small bowl. It's very tasty.

As part of this challenge, I also wanted to improve my emotional well being. If I'm not vigilant, I can find myself in a funk. Friday and Saturday were especially stressful, because I found out that my 29-year-old horse would have to be put down. I'd owned him for 26 years, so it was very hard.

Anna, thank you for this forum because I really needed to think about what's going on in my life.

Mexican Black Bean Lasagna

2 tablespoon(s) olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
2 jalapeņos (seeded if desired), finely chopped
1 red bell pepper, cut into 1/4-inch pieces
2 clove(s) garlic, finely chopped
1 can(s) (15-ounce) black beans, rinsed
1 cup(s) frozen corn kernels, thawed
2 teaspoon(s) chili powder
2 tablespoon(s) fresh lime juice
Lime wedges, for serving
1/2 cup(s) fresh cilantro, chopped
Cilantro, for serving
1 cup(s) (10-ounce) can red enchilada sauce, about 1 cup
9 small corn tortillas
6 ounce(s) (about 1 1/2 cups) Muenster cheese, shredded
small Sour cream, for serving
Hot sauce, for serving

Directions
1.Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, covered, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Add the jalapeņos, bell pepper, and garlic and cook, covered, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are just tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in the beans, corn, and chili powder and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the lime juice and cilantro.

2.Spread 1/2 cup enchilada sauce on the bottom of an 8-inch square or 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Top with 3 tortillas, tearing them to fit as necessary. Spread a third of the remaining enchilada sauce over the top (about 1/2 cup). Top with a third of the bean mixture and 1/2 cup cheese; repeat twice.

3.Bake until the lasagna is heated through and the top is beginning to brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes. Serve with cilantro, lime wedges, sour cream, and hot sauce, if desired.

For dinner, I had 2 baked chicken strips, sauteed zuchinni and squash with onions, mac n cheese and some type of canada rice (unprocessed). Didn't quite meet the plate percentages, but it was still a healthy meal!

12/13/2014

Yesterday, I went to church. We had potluck after lunch, which is mostly healthy, vegetarian food. Afterward, I went for a walk with my boyfriend. The weather was nice (it's been mostly cold for a while), so we decided to enjoy it!

For dinner, I had a spinach salad w/mushrooms, tomatoes, and cucumbers, and Mexican lasagna. I'm too tired to do it now, but, if anyone would like me to post the recipe, let me know. It's really good!

Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I rode t Sonic today and it happened to be happy hour. So, I ended up getting a large cherry slushy at half price. Slushies and sweets are my weakness lol However, I can't give in to my weaknesses/temptation every time they present themselves.I really need to come up with a plan in the case that I am tempted to eat or do something that I shouldn't do.

One of my health goals is:

Walk either 1 mile OR 20 minutes each day

Being active for at least 20 (preferably 30) minutes each day can improve your circulation system, reduce the risk of many diseases, and strengthen your body and bones. Also, walking is a perfect way to get your thoughts and frustrations out, or to just reflect on the beauty that is in your life. So, there are tons of mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits if you take advantage of this opportunity.

I have been walking each day,but I sometimes forget to meditate and pray while I do. I will incorporate that in today!

Have a great day everyone!

I would like to be able to control my blood pressure without medication. Right now I take 5 mg of lisinopril. That's it. Over the last 15 months, I've gone from almost no exercise to two hours five days a week. It's my nutrition choices that keep me from losing weight and further reducing my blood pressure.

As I mentioned, I perceive my fitness goal (consistency, regular exercises) as one of the core goals for my motivation and healthy lifestyle. When I start exercising the adrenaline does a lot. And I am more likely to stick to healthy food and drink choices when I workout regularly.
I guess it wouldn't work for everyone and there are people for whom it's easier to stick to a diet and add some workout to it. I still have problems with binge eating and unhealthy snacks and it's easier for me to say 'no' to them when I feel the work I did to my muscles.
I had coffee and tea today (I like green tea, but 1-2 coffees during a day are a must for me :|), but apart from that I sticked to water - probably around 30 ounces, which is not a lot.

I'm working on my fitness routine goal. I've realized that if I stick to this goal and exercise regularly I tend to pay more attention and be more consistent in terms of other healthy goals, and clean food choices and more water intake.
I wrote down some pros, cons and obstacles related to this goal. I know that I need to think what to do with my exercises when I'm on business or leasure trips, especially when they last more than 2-3 days.
I had raw tomatoes and salad greens as sides throughout the day

Today started out fast, and just kept going....My car had some problems, I had to leave it where it stopped. My husband game my granddaughter a ride to school and me a ride to work. He took the day off to do some repairs so the car would get from A to B for a little while longer.
I worked all day, not wanting to know if the car was fixed or not, because I didn't want to hear the words unfixable. I decided I really needed some alone time so walked home. Not sure of the miles, but it was a little over an hour, mostly down hill. I walked at a fast pace, because I wanted to know how long it would take me to get home so I could estimate how long it would take to walk to work if it ever comes to that. When I got home, I was told the car will run but we need to keep an eye on it.
I did eat vegies and fruits today, and drank at least 40 oz.
I was happy that today is a rest day for my December challenge, but I still got in an hour of exercise (walking)

Share one of your health goals (whichever you feel comfortable with) with the team and explain why this goal is important, not only for yourself, but also for any person. Limit your intake of juices and sodas today by filling up on water. (You may choose to report how many ounces of water you consume.)

Leslie, I'll be praying for you. I am in a similar situation, but not with a trainer. People aren't always the nicest, but we should never let others change how we are. You made the right decision. Continue to be patient and to put your best foot forward. Always keep your personal goals in mind!

AWMMA1 That is a REALLY good plan. There's so much on there, and it deals with different areas/aspects of your life! I know that you can do it! I also struggle with chocolate (especially Ferrero Rocher candies) lol I've accepted that I'll never get over eating it lol As long as we find a way to exercise self control, then it's okay to indulge a little

Today was great! I woke up and worked on some job applications. (I'm graduating with my master's this Friday, so I need to find a job quickly!!) I didn't quite drink my 40 ounces today, but I did drink much more than I usually do. I alternated between power walking and walking on a incline for a mile. After that, I jogged the remaining time(about 3 minutes). I ate tons of vegetables today - stuffed eggplant, stuffed cabbage, zucchini, squash, broccoli and carrots.

I didn't quite meet all of my goals, but I will try again tomorrow!!!

I need to finish putting my goals to together, but I'm so happy I was able to put aside my anger. Trainer Tom can be a tad moody and sometimes I don't recognize the thunder clouds. He got in my face last Thursday, and he was a jerk about it. For days, I tossed about my options. I knew it was either stop training with him or stop being angry. Thankfully, I chose the later/

Ok,
It seems that I was a bitt scattered about writing my goals out. I often have the belief that everyone knows what I am think so that I don't have to map it out. I should write it down so it is clear not only for others but so I do not alter the plan when I can not accomplish what I have set out to do.
December Goals.
Fitness
1. Stick to my Daily challenge.
2. go to the gym 3 times a week.
3. do at least 60 minutes of exercise a day
Life
1. Try to see me through Gods Eyes.
2. Attempt being Extraordinary for 1 week, and then keep trying it until I have it comes natural. (Andy Stanly)
Health

1 Eat 5 serving of fruit and vegies.
2. Drink at least 40 oz of water
3. try my best to limit chocolate intake.

Today December 8th.
I did my December fitness goal for the day and a little more because I missed the last two day. I had to split it up, because it was a lot.
I ate at least 5 fruit and vegies.
I still need to drink a little more water
I did better on the chocolate today than I Friday, that was the worst. I don't know what came over me, but I was totally out of control. it was like some chocolate craving person took over my body and I just couldn't stop. But I am better now.

Leslie. I hope your days get better and the sun shines on your life and heart so you can know joy.

Today was quite busy for me. I am just now finishing my plan of action for my goals. Since I only had 6 goals, I decided to write a small plan of action for each of them. I'm going to hang it next to my calendar in front of the desk in my room.

I have drank about 32 ounces of water today. I'm going to drink the remaining 16 ounces before I go to bed.

Excited for tomorrow's challenge!

I wrote for myself yesterday sort of a guidance how to pursuite one of my goals. The directions may be a bit naive but I believe it's better to write them down. I've already observed that it works for me better if it's written.
I didn't make it to drink 48 ounces of water :(

I have a December Challenge on my page. I have been working on it and doing pretty well with it.
I plan on having a challenge each month along with going to the gym on my gym nights, and doing what ever challenge I have committed to.
I have been working on cutting out processed foods as much as possible.
My challenge is to investigate what foods complement each other to help my body burn fat.
Sometimes my pocket book does not allow me to stock my refrigerator with the foods that I would like to eat so I am forced to eat the man food that my husband lives off of. I have been eating less and less of his man foods, because it is too much work to burn it off.
Have a great month everyone. Hope you stay warm and happy.

Hi!
It's great to hear from you again!
As for my new year's goals, I wish I could be more consistent with my fitness routine. I'm now proceeding with a fitness plan for December with approx. 20-min exercises 6 days a week. I'll try to keep at least such level for January and move on to the next months.
Another goal would be probably to be consistent in meal planning and eating less sweets. Everyone knows about benefits of written meal planning and it kinda works for me too, but I just can't keep it longer than 2 weeks in a row.
Good luck with your goals!
Magda

It's time to start a new challenge!! (approx. 3.5 weeks in duration) The new year is quickly approaching. Many of us will make resolutions of some sort. Often times, we fail to keep the promises of change that we make to ourselves and others. So, let's change things up a bit. Instead of beginning your change once the peach drops at midnight on New Year's Day, why not start now?! Let's start making subtle changes each week so that the transition into the New Year is a smooth one.
