in this situation i would just estimate the calories i ate ...then burn those calories off with some sort of workout, the fitness tracker helps you keep count of the amount of calories you have burned.

You are right. These kids bring their problems to school with them. I guess it's just the mama in me that I want to try and fix them all. I'd probably bring lots of them home to live here if I could get away with it. Thankfully, hubby has lots more sense than I do!

I am hoping that if I can force myself to adhere to the good workout schedule that I established during the summer that it could help me deal with the stress. I do crochet and knit, but there is very little time for that during the school year and I will use part of that time to work out.

Do you find that working out after work is more effective for easing stress or before work to get off of on a good start?

I appreciate your support so very much! I feel the love!

I THINK YOU MAY JUST NEED TO FIND A GOOD STRESS-RELIEF ACTIVITY TO DO WHEN YOUR LONG DAY OF WORKING WITH TEENS IS OVER... TRY TO COMMITT TO A HOBBY TO CLEAR YOUR MIND, OR MAYBE SOMETHING NEW THAT YOU MAY HAVE WANTED TO GET INTO BUT NEVER TOOK THE TIME OUT TO RESEARCH IT.

AS MANY ALREADY KNOW I AM A COSMETOLOGY TEACHER I DEAL WITH TEENS ON THE REGULAR. BUT I DONT LET THEM PULL ME DOWN FACE FIRST, I TRY TO RELATE TO THEM , BESIDES IM NOT THAT MUCH OLDER THAN THEY ARE....

I FIND THAT THE TEENS I WORK WITH (AGES16-18) ALL HAVE UNIQUE BACKGROUNDS AND MANY OF THEM BRING THEIR HOUSEHOLD PROBLEMS TO SCHOOL, AND SOMETIMES THOSE PROBLEMS ARE VERY VERY SERIOUS.... IT IS VERY EMOTIONALLY DRAINING AND I HAVE TO DO THIS YEAR ROUND UNLIKE YOU JAN...YOU GET A BREAK DURING THE SUMMER.... I GUESS ITS JUST A PROCESS OF ELIMINATION TO ME, IM SO USED TO IT...I JUST LEAVE MY WORK STRESS AT WORK AND KEEP HOUSEHOLD STRESS AT HOME...ITS HARD TO DO..BUT YOU JUST HAVE TO FIND THAT ONE THING TO DO THAT ACTS AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN HOME AND WORK.... THIS ALSO PREPARES YOU FOR THE NEXT DAY.

SO TAKE IT EASY AT HOME....

LOVE YA JAN!

Hi all,
Right about the time that I thought I was starting to really get a handle on my emotional eating, I fell right off the wagon. I eat out of stress. It could be good stress; it could be bad stress. I just don't know how to avoid it, especially at work. There is something about working with teenagers all day long that can be emotionally draining and stressful.

Don't get me wrong, I do realize that no job is stress free, but I can only really relate to the stress I experience. We're all stressed, but I am fascinated to find out how some people can handle it when I struggle so much.

WE all go through it, and no matter how motivated you have been, and how in control you were of your meal plans, you will eat fattening foods... not because we are fat pigs that just like to go into food-coma, but because we are "HUMANS"...humans eat food, and we dont wanna eat celery and carrots all day everyday.....lol

but when you do treat yourself to a hearty meal or dessert, treat your body with enough respect to work that fat off...make it easy for your body to digest everything you take in by just giving it a few minutes of exercise before bed....IT BEST NOT TO JUST LAY ON THOSE 3 SLICES OF PIZZA WE ENJOYED SO MUCH.....LOL

THANKS FOR SHARING SMILE!

When I see things about emotional eating it almost always says about eating when you're sad. I hardly ever see the excited part so I'm glad you posted this. I always thought I may be an emotional eater, but I don't eat because I'm upset..that makes me eat less.

I do eat when I'm excited or happy though. Last night for instance, my husband was gone for about a week. I stayed on my plan very well!! Then he comes home...the whole day I was nervous about his arrival and didn't eat....When he gets home we stop at a gas station and I get a freakin huge plate of cheese fries...and it was like everything I did went out the window!

Now I know the pattern better from seeing this and I will watch myself...It's like I go into an eating coma! Not happening again :)

Accept Your Wonderful Self:

Size and Self-Acceptance for Achieving Healthy Weight........
If we let ourselves, we may start to believe that magazine cover girls (whose photos are air-brushed and trimmed in, mind you!) are the norm and that the rest of us are somehow deeply flawed. What we get then is the soundtrack "I hate myself" or "I hate what I see in the mirror" playing over and over again in our heads, fueling our endless dieting cycles and painful frustration.

"If you are caught up in not liking yourself because of your size, it quickly starts whittling away at your motivation," .... "That inner voice makes you feel helpless and hopeless."

How to regain control of your eating habits
Though strong emotions can trigger cravings for food, you can take steps to control those cravings. To help stop emotional eating, try these suggestions:

Learn to recognize true hunger. Is your hunger physical or emotional? If you ate just a few hours ago and don't have a rumbling stomach, you're probably not really hungry. Give the craving a few minutes to pass.
Know your triggers. For the next several days, write down what you eat, how much you eat, when you eat, how you're feeling when you eat and how hungry you are. Over time, you may see patterns emerge that reveal negative eating patterns and triggers to avoid.
Look elsewhere for comfort. Instead of unwrapping a candy bar, take a walk, treat yourself to a movie, listen to music, read or call a friend. If you think that stress relating to a particular event is nudging you toward the refrigerator, try talking to someone about it to distract yourself. Plan enjoyable events for yourself.
Don't keep unhealthy foods around. Avoid having an abundance of high-calorie comfort foods in the house. If you feel hungry or blue, postpone the shopping trip for a few hours so that these feelings don't influence your decisions at the store.
Snack healthy. If you feel the urge to eat between meals, choose a low-fat, low-calorie food, such as fresh fruit, vegetables with fat-free dip or unbuttered popcorn. Or test low-fat, lower calorie versions of your favorite foods to see if they satisfy your craving.
Eat a balanced diet. If you're not getting enough calories to meet your energy needs, you may be more likely to give in to emotional eating. Try to eat at fairly regular times and don't skip breakfast. Include foods from the basic groups in your meals. Emphasize whole grains, vegetables and fruits, as well as low-fat dairy products and lean protein sources. When you fill up on the basics, you're more likely to feel fuller, longer.
Exercise regularly and get adequate rest. Your mood is more manageable and your body can more effectively fight stress when it's fit and well rested.
If you give in to emotional eating, forgive yourself and start fresh the next day. Try to learn from the experience, and make a plan for how you can prevent it in the future. Focus on the positive changes you're making in your eating habits and give yourself credit for making changes that ensure better health.

I am trying to turn my emotional eating to emotional exercising as well. It works sometimes. Emotinal eating has and still is an issue for me. But like Shawn said, at least now I emotionally eat healthy things. I dont even buy "junk food" anymore. I guess I still need to find a way to address the emotional eating problem.

I'm often asked about how to identify whether or not emotional eating may be an issue. Emotional eating is not always easily identified. Here are some patterns that are likely to indicate that some kind of emotional eating is going on:

1. The hunger comes on suddenly and the need to eat feels urgent--physiological hunger comes on slowly and it's okay to delay eating.
2. You keep eating even if you aren't hungry anymore or the hunger doesn't go away even though you are full.
3. You eat to the point of physical discomfort.
4. You don't know whether you were hungry or not when you ate.
5. After you eat you realize you aren't really aware of how much you ate or how it tasted.
6. You have feelings of shame, guilt or embarrassment after eating.
7. You eat because you are bored, tired, lonely, excited.
8. Hunger accompanies an unpleasant emotion--anger, hurt, fear, anxiety. Emotional eating begins in your mind--thinking about food--not in your stomach.
9. You crave a specific food and won't feel content until you have that. If you are eating for physical hunger, any food will fill you up.
10. You keep eating (or grazing, or nibbling) because you just can't figure out what you are hungry for. Nothing seems to hit the spot (physical hunger goes away no matter what food you choose to fill up on).
