My holistically-minded (colleagues with Christiane Northrup) doctor put me on bio-identical hormone replacement this year. I have a tiny little stick-on patch on my belly and I take progesterone for the first two weeks of the month. I have to say, in addition to getting rid of other icky perimenopausal symptoms, the sleep problem I had for the past ten years has gone away. Yay!

I just turned 45. Due to medical problem, I am no longer making much estrogen ( if any) Belly fat is something I too am battling. On a lighter note. This morning when I looked into the mirror, instead of focusing on how my shape has completely changed below the neck, I remembered something funny. When I was a young girl, I always thought that when I grew up I definitely wanted to have a mustache. I was very angry when my brother informed me I could " never have one, because mustaches are for boys only!" Well ha ha Big Brother, I am finally old enough to grow one if I want to and I am now, thanks to Sparkpeople, Healthy & fit enough to kick your butt! Right after I bleach my lip =)

Sad but true. I'm 47 and have been having perimenopause symptoms for a couple of years. Until recently I mostly much carried my fat below my waist (hips, thighs) but now I have this jellyfish like bulge area above my belly button and I have to work twice as hard to lose half as much.

As we enter perimenopause the balance between estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone gets whacked. Those fluxuations and imbalances are the primary cause of most of the typical symptoms - hot flashes, insomnia, changes in our periods, anxiety, irritability, tummy fat, harder time losing, blah blah blah.

A lot of the material I've read seems to indicate that eating more of a 'zone' or 'south beach' type diet - ~40% low glycemic carbs, ~30% protien, ~30% fat with at least half of the fat coming from healthy fat source, somthing along those lines - really helps. Something to do with how it impacts the hormone balance. Also, there are supposedly a lot of natural herbal supplements that can help keep the hormones more balanced, but I'm always really cautious about self-medicating even with 'natural' products.

Would love to hear from others about what's working for you, or what you've tried that hasn't worked.

Thanks!
Shanna

Over 40 for women hormones is a factor - estrogen helps you keep weight off your tummy and on your hips instead when you're younger. Once you go through 'the change' , without that estrogen all the fat jumps right on your waist, just like on men. (I speak from both information from my nursing aunt and my own painful experience). When I was 47 I weighed 140 and had no issues with food or metabolism, and now 2 years later eating and exercising about the same amount, I'm suddenly the Michelen Woman at 167. My obgyn says welcome to menopause, I say direct me to the gym!!

Hello!! I am 40plus and trying to lose about 15 pounds. Beginning of last year I did awesome!! Running 4 miles 5 days a week - no pop - hard time getting up to my 1200 calories per day and that is still a problem most days... In four months I lost 7 pounds! Very frustrating!

I have gone back to school and during last semester I barely had time for any exercise ( braille is tough). I am trying to get back but I will start a new semester soon and time will be tight. I have been running when I can and kettlebells......

I have heard that over 40 hormones can be a factor... anyone know anything about this??

I do try to get up to the 1200 calories but it can be tough!

any ideas are greatly appreciated!!!
