Well it's the end of the 30 days and even though I have not been posting here regularly I feel my challenge was a huge SUCCESS!!! My starting weight was on September 1st somewhere between 136 and 137...this morning I weighed in at 132.4!!! I have not eaten trail mix in 30 days and don't feel it calling me like it did a month ago...I don't feel the frantic need to eat or the desire to comfort myself with food!!!

So the plan going forward...

Food: Continue to eat only when hungry and only in reasonable amounts...although I will not be tracking everyday, I will continue to keep a written log of my intake for at least the next 30 days...if things get out of control, I will immediately start to track again!!!

Exercise: After Long Beach I will be looking into a new trainer/running coach and changing up my ST!!! I would really like to start working on improving my running speed in the coming year!!!

Sleep: Sleep is still an issue but as my stress is lessens my sleep improves...so I will continue to work on various stress management techniques in an effort to better regulate my sleep...I also purchased a gadget that tracks sleep and wakefulness throughout the night...maybe with more accurate information, I will have a better idea how to work on the problem!!!

Behavior: I have been doing better with the bedroom eating but I think this is just something that is part of my life...DH and I have gotten into the habit of eating together in the bedroom...he is not willing to change so I am trying to adjust!!! My binging seems to happen more when he is not home so for now I will not eat in the bedroom when I am home alone...we'll see if that works!!!

Thanks to those that followed and supported my efforts this last month...I really helped to know that I was not alone in this!!!I'm hoping if I can stay the course, the other 7 pounds will be gone by the end of October!!!

Jackie!!!

Good Afternoon Ladies!!!

I haven't fallen off but I have had a super busy week!!! Logging my food is really getting annoying!!! It seems like I'm always logging something!!! Here's where I am today....

Food: Good day so far...planning on leftover roasted veggies and brown rice for dinner and some yogurt and fruit for an evening snack

Exercise: Gym day today...lots of crunches and upper body, today is a complete rest from cardio...getting ready for 22 miles on Saturday

Sleep: Slept well last night even after cycling through the first hour of Biggest Loser...usually if I work out at night I have trouble sleeping...tonight I'm going to make it an early night!!!

Behavior: No snacking last night...will have my evening snack in the living room instead of the bedroom

Hope everyone has a great day!!!!

Good Morning Everyone!!!

Friday and Saturday's recap and today's plan:

Food: Food was good both day although I did not track my calories yesterday---today I will eat at the lower end of my range since it is a light workout day

Exercise: As part of a team challenge, Friday I did 50 squats, 50 biceps curls with 8# weight, 350 crunches and 70 minutes walking, yesterday was my first 20 mile run..I also did 100 crunches, 50 squats and 50 biceps curls with 5# weights---today I will walk or do some light cycling for my cardio and then curl, squats and crunch...hopefully 350 but we'll see!!!

Sleep: Sleep is always off on the weekend because of my long run...I have been up since 4 am but I am going to go back to bed for a couple hours and then start my day again, going to start bed time routine by 8 and will hopefully be asleep by 10!!!

Behavior: Yesterday I spent the day in the bedroom...Kenny was on his X-box and after running 20 miles I just couldn't listen to that all day...I didn't binge and ate only when hungry but did eat in the bedroom---today I will make an effort to eat at the dining room table depending on how I feel....recovery comes first!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!!!

Jackie!!!

Good Morning Everyone!!!

Wednesday and yesterday's recap and today's plan:

Food: Wednesday not so good, yesterday outstanding---today's plan is to eat at the high end of my range with more carbs at dinner so I can be well stocked for tomorrows long run...20 miles!!!

Exercise: Wednesday 45 minutes stationary bike and some various ST stuff, Thursday 5 mile run and 350 crunches for another team challenge---today will be light...only doing enough to meet team challegne of 50 biceps curls, 50 squats, 350 crunches and 50 minutes light cardio!!!

Sleep: Slept well last night...I got 8+ hours and woke up well rested---will try to get to sleep by 9:30 so I can be up early to run in the morning!!!

Behavior: Wednesday was another snacky night in the bedroom, last night I stayed busy in the living room until 9 and was in bed without a snack by 9:30 and went right to sleep---pre-long run nights are tricky because I usually like to start prepping early but usually need something to eat later in the evening...I'm going to have to gauge and balance this tonight!!! Wish me luck!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!!!

Good Evening Everyone!!!

Just getting a chance to post...I was taking care of my niece this morning and I just got home and had a quick snack before I start dinner!!! I'm going to miss plums and nectarines!!!

Yesterday's recap and today's plan:

Food: I did great yesterday until 8:30...long story short, the snacking monster came out again last night for no apparent reason other than my calories were low and I tried to bump them up a little even though I wasn't hungry...probably should have just gone to sleep---today has been good so far but my day are usually good, it's my nights that are problematic!!!

Exercise: 45 minutes stationary bike and some various ST stuff for a team challenge---today was supposed to be another rest day but I think I'm going to jump on the stationary bike for a little bit while I watch Top Chef tonight!!!

Sleep: Slept well last night...not sure if I got 8 hours but I woke up well rested---will try to get to sleep by 10 so I can be up early to run in the morning!!!

Behavior: Ate in bedroom last night...it's too easy to mindlessly eat while laying down watching TV---today all meal will be in the living room and no eating after 8pm!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!!!

Jackie!!!

Well most of the weekend was good - stuck to plan pre-race day(sat) and felt good post race and didn't over-indulge as I've been known to do. Yesterday, not so much. More likely sympatomatic of being home all day doing chores and other stuff that triggers my bad habits.

So on today - I'm re-starting my food tracking to get my food discipline back in order. I've already logged what I've had today and the remaining plan for the day. If I stick to plan I'll be on the low end of my calorie range, and within range of my macro nutrient targets, properly balanced. I'm not running today so I'm okay with being on the low end.

I'd plan to run this morning, but didn't sleep well last night and just couldn't get myself up at 4am for it. I packed my bag to try for a lunch time run at the fitness center at work, but got the call that my son's prescription is ready for pick up so I'll have to leave early to get the pediatrician's office so I can get it and send it off today (mail order) so I don't run out (Nickolas without his concerta does not make for a good day for mommy), and it's Back to School night for his class, so with all the running around I just won't get a run in. But at least I'll get a second short walk to school and back.

moving forward...

Hello Jackie, looks like you are pretty much on track.
It takes so much discipline, does it not? I found this and sent it to my sis....she is an M.D., and unfortunately has been diabetic since her 20s. she was dx'd with heart dz at 41, and while that is scary as heck at best, she hangs in there and exercises faithfully and tries *so* hard to watch what she eats. Anyway, we shared a wicked chuckle over it, thought I would share.......

I LOVE THIS DOCTOR!

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it...don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine; that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. So have a cup now and then!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!
Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!! ..... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO! Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:
'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride' !!!!!
AND.....

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausage and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION

Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Good Morning Everyone!!!

Back to the grind...with this being a race weekend and a holiday Monday, I have a billion things to do today including grocery shopping...the only fruit I have is 4 bananas!!! And no fresh veggies at all!!! I steamed up every last one yesterday to avoid going out!!! LOL!!! It's going to be a long day!!!

Yesterday's recap and today's plan:

Food: Ate at the high end of my range with some extra pecans to boost my fat a little---today should be a moderate day since I will not be very active...maybe around 1400-1500!!!

Exercise: Total rest day yesterday---today I'm going to do some light abs and upper body and 45 minutes cycling...probably stationary bike before dinner

Sleep: I get terrible post race headaches that only go away with sleep so yesterday was all about getting to sleep early...I don't even think I saw 8pm... I was up at 5:30 and my headache is gone---tonight I will start nighttime routine prior to Big Brother and hopefully fall asleep by 10!!!

Behavior: Ate in bedroom yesterday...Kenny had friends over and I just didn't want to hear X-box live as background noise---today all meal will be in the living room and no eating after 8pm!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!!!

Good Morning Everyone!!!

I had an excellent weekend!!! I'll save the race details for my blog but it was quite a success!!!

Weekend's recap and today's plan:

Food: Did great both Saturday and Sunday...tracked everything I ate including samples at the expo and all my pre/post race food...I still need to log it in my tracker but I know my ranges were good---today's plan is to eat at the mid-high end of my range and make sure I get enough fats...I'm feeling more hungry today than yesterday!!!

Exercise: Saturday did tons of walking at the expo and Downtown Disney, also treated myself to 20 minutes in the hot tub at the hotel after dinner, yesterday ran 13.16 miles.---today is a rest day although I might try a little indoor cycling to loosen up my legs!!!

Sleep: Slept from 10p-3a Saturday...I was almost asleep by 9 until the fireworks started and who can resist Disneyland fireworks...yesterday I fell sleep at 8:30p and was up at 4a went back to bed until 6:30a---will take an easy day today and try to get to bed early...might try to get in a short nap after lunch!!!

Behavior: Ate in bedroom yesterday but considering it was a race day I didn't stress too much once I got home---this morning I wanted to have breakfast in bed but decided to start the week on a positive note and ate with Kenny in the living room...better for me and good for our relationship!!!

Hope everyone is enjoy a nice Labor Day holiday!!!

Jackie!!!

Glad yesterday went so well for you.
Good luck at the Disneyland, say hi to Mickey for me, and keep us posted on how it goes. Are you going to run in Mickey ears or Minnie skirt emoticon
Took everyone for a 6.5 miler today....DH, 13 yr old, and the DirtDogs. The whole team, if you will. Saw quite a few people out there, some said they were prepping for Long Beach. Kiddo turned to me at the end of the run and said she wants to do the Disneyland Half next yr and go on Splash Mt right afterwards!

Good Morning Everyone!!!

Great job Patty...thank goodness for friends who don't take NO for an answer!!!

Yesterday was a much better day...not sure if it was because I finally broken down and admitted how stressed I was at home or if it was in anticipation of tomorrows 1/2 marathon or if it was the new supplement I started taking or maybe it was a combination of everything falling into place but it was a better day!!!

Yesterday's recap and today's plan:

Food: Calories slightly below range but all macro and micro nutrients met---limit sampling at the expo and make sure to get in all veggies....food is hard when I'm not at home...

Exercise: 2.25 mile walk just to stretch things out---rest for race tomorrow

Sleep: Slept well last night 9 hours on and off---staying at race site so will get to bed as early as possible but I will need to be up by 3:30 for a 6:00 start time

Behavior: Did not eat in bedroom and stopped eating at 7:30...talked to DH about my stress and ways to change thing to lower it...he seems willing and that helps

I've got a bunch of things to do to get ready to leave...hope everyone has a great weekend!!! I'm taking my laptop so I'll try to check in later if I can get a wireless connection!!!

yesterday and today was not good. My eating was all over the place and the only exercise I got was riding my bike to work which is less than 2 miles roundtrip.

I'll regroup tomorrow, I plan to go out for an early run and I need to go to the market and stock up on some healthy food.

One day at a time.

The nighttime walk was exactly what I did the other night to avoid temptation.

Yesterday not bad. I didn't do the nighttime snacking - yea!!! and just kept busy in the house - it was a little more tolerable than previous nights.

We did have a "celebration" at work with salad and pizza - I did succumb to one slice of the veggie pizza and some salad - but then brought my packed lunch back home and had it today..

Little by little trying to get my head back in the right place.

Sorry about that. Must be frustrating. I do understand about the emotional eating. Couldnt tell from your post if your run was in the PM or earlier, but you might consider if things look like they are going in the same direction to just laceup your shoes, arm yourself with pepper spray and reflective gear (this is CA we are talkin about), and head out the door for a walk. It can help remove you from the temptation (accessible food) and "break the cycle". Just something that has worked for me. I know others have suggested journaling, but then you are still arm's length from temptation.

Angie...sorry about the food, but it sounds like you made a pretty *healthy* choice at RUbio's anyway.

Yesterday was a big FAIL for me.

It was my long day, where I work both morning and night, so I pack food for the entire day.

I got busy when I got to work, and forgot to put my food in the fridge.

By the evening, my veggies and beans and rice did not smell so great, so I threw them out.

I ended up getting a veggie burrito from Rubio's and went way over my calories.

But, today is a new day, back at it.

Good Morning Everyone!!!

Yesterday did not turn out as well as it started...I did great until 7 when I finally retreated to the cool bedroom and began to snack and snack and snack...once I started I just didn't stop!!! I didn't even enjoy what I was eating...it wasn't comforting or relaxing...it was angry eating which tells me I am not addressing other things!!! Needless to say my sleep was off as well!!! So that's three strikes for yesterday...I did get out for a short run but even that was ill-planned and harder than necessary!!!

Today's plan....

Log everything before eating

Rest day or light cycling...2 days until Disneyland

Will refrain from eating in the bedroom and after 8pm

Will start nighttime routine at 8 and hopefully be asleep by 10

Would love to be able to sleep in tomorrow...at least until 6 am!!!

Will check in before I leave for Disneyland!!!

Hope everyone had a successful day...and has a plan for a successful long weekend!!!

Jackie!!!

I successfully managed to avoid the nighttime snacking. After getting my 5 miles in early in the morning (ie 5 am) I also did a 2.5 mile walk at lunch and another 3 mile walk after dinner. The house was miserable so I decided to get out after dinner (at least it got me out of the kitchen).

Lots of other people doing the same - probably saw about 10 people running in the neighborhood around 8pm.

Today I just couldn't get up early for the run. So I packed up my stuff and I'll hit the treadmill after work.

Maybe next week I'll get back to tracking food online again...

Glad you are staying on track. Try not to stress out too much about the wt....it fluctuates. Important thing is that you are on the right track.

Watch out for the calf. Not sure how the weather is in your area, but here in Riverside it doesnt seem to be cooling down. It was 74 when I started my run at 6, in the dark, today, and humid and no breeze. Got kinda nauseous. Might have been imagining I was inhaling a ton of smoke, though the air qual reports didnt look bad, but I could *see* the smoke on the drive home. Anyway, make sure you are adjusting your speed and taking plenty of walk breaks. Jeff Galloway wrote somethng that made a lot of sense. When it is hot, blood flows to the skin to help you cool off, so the muscles dont get as much blood, you build up lactic acid, you get sore and tired, so adjust your pace. I *know* that and I still often overdo it. Seem to have more muscle aches (like right now a grumpy ITB) than when I am doing high mileage mountain runs in the winter.

Good Morning!
I did good yesterday, and stayed in my calorie range. Today I am going to be towards the higher end (1750) but still in range.
I got up super early yesterday to get strength training in, and did 4 miles this morning, before work.

Good Morning Everyone!!!

So here's my report for yesterday and my plan for today:

Food: Only 3 calories over but too high on fat---eat at the low end of my range with more protein and no nuts

Exercise: 12 miles cycling 30 minutes abs---either 2 mile run or 6 miles cycling after work...ice and massage after workout

Sleep: Went into bedroom 7:30, fell asleep at 9ish, woke up at 11 back to sleep until 4:30 stayed in bed until 5 turned TV off---start bedtime routine at 8 and turned TV off by 10

Behavior change: Did not eat in bedroom although did eat while watching TV---continue no food in the bedroom and limit TV while eating

Outcome: Weighed in this morning and scale is up AGAIN---will not weigh again until 9/9---feeling better and more rested although I feel a slight cramp in my left calf not a good sign!!!

Hope everyone is working their plan and/or making adjustments along the way!!! Let's think of some ways to get through the weekend...that's the toughest time for me to stay on track!!!

WE are doing great...let's keep the momentum going!!!

Jackie!!!

the no eating after 8 is a good goal.
i was just thinking that is when i start having 'mindless eating'....i am tired (maybe bc i woke up bf dawn to run) and the focus/energy level is low, and i wander to the fridge and....yeah.....
think i will add that to my list.

Good Morning Everyone!!!

Great goals!!! I'm so happy for the support!!!

Last night was pretty good...except for a momentary lapse with some homemade granola...but all in all I'll call it a successful day 1!!!

I fell asleep during Big Brother, probably 9:30ish and woke up at 4 and watched the rest of it but went back to sleep until 6...I'm feeling well rested and ready for the day!!!

So the plan for day...

Tracking ALL my food before I eat it

Core ST (this is a light week due to Sunday's 1/2 marathon)

No eating in the bedroom...need to add no eating after 8pm (DH has joined me in this goal)

Take time at the end of the day to unwind to help with better sleep!!!

Hope everyone has a successful day!!!

Jackie!!!

This is to a great article on sleep if anyone is having issues!!! drphil.com/articles/article/612/

This month I want to focus on staying within the 1600-1800 calories range (the weekends are most challenging) and fitting in more strength training.

Thanks for the replies and support!!! I feel really positive about this challenge!!! I posted it on several teams and lots of people seem interested!!!

Good day so far...I have my meals planned for the rest of the day and my calories are in range and my macronutrients are pretty balanced....I tend to get into trouble when I try to add calories at the end of the day...I do need to get a good plant based multi-vitamin/mineral supplement with some B-12 and iron as well as some calcium...

I got in a 4 mile run this morning and burned 534 calories according to my Forerunner...I think it overestimates!!!

Tonight is Big Brother at 9...so hopefully I'll be able to stay awake to watch it and fall right to sleep at 10...usually I fall asleep waiting for it to start and then wake up at 2 am and watch it on DVR!!!

So far no eating in the bedroom...it's harder than I thought since that's where the only air conditioner is...it's not so bad right now but it's going to be tough not snacking in bed watching Big Brother!!! What a night!!! LOL!!!

I'll check back in the morning...hope you all have a successful 1st night!!!

Jackie!!!

Jackie,

Boy you are in good company. I'm struggling with so many of these same issues myself (and a few others).

In my mind, my two areas that I decided to focus on are 1) night time munching, and 2) portion control.

I'm not eating junk, but I am eating too much, and for the wrong reasons.

As for tracking - I should I know, but once I'm home, I tend to avoid the computer - especially on weekend. I may try a written journal.

I wish I could commit to 7-8 hours of sleep - but that is often beyond my control right now.

I guess, what I need to do is focus on what I can control in the chaos that is my life right now - and that is what goes in my mouth.

boy, i hope you guys realize how awesome you are. there are always setbacks, but success is picking yourself up one more time than falling.

it's tough keeping it up. right now sunny so cal has turned into hot, smokey so cal. started my run in the pre dawn darkness and when the sun came up i realized everything was *brown* and i started visualizing particles in my lungs!

but hey....today is a new day, as is tomorrow.

my challenge:
to keep up my running even when the alarm goes off in the dark and i curse.....

I'll join you!
I've been struggling for months to get back to eating right and exercising. I've joined about 4 different challenges for September to keep me in check.

So I will get to bed earlier so I can get my eight hours and get up early for my runs. (I ran 4 miles today)

I will stay away from food with empty calories. I will log my meals and exercise in Spark.

I will keep up with all my challenges, I need all the support I can get!

Good Luck!

Patty

Good Morning Dreamers!!!

I posted this as a blog but also wanted to post here to see if anyone wanted to join me in this 30 day challenge!!!!

In the last few months I have seen my weight balloon right out of my maintenance range!!! I have talked about, cried about, blogged about but really have not done the work necessary to bring about results...so I have decided it is time to go back to tracking my food DILIGENTLY for the next 30 days!!! I reset my Sparkpage/goals to give myself a fresh start!!! Even though I am running and doing ST, my eating has gotten sloppy...portion control is out of control and lots of my old bad habits are returning!!!

So for the next 30 days (at least)...

I will maintain my SP range of 1420-1770
calories...logging everything daily

I will follow the training plan layed out by my trainer

I will get 7-8 hours of sleep nightly

I will refrain from eating in the bedroom which is where most of my mindless snacking and emotional eating happens

I think if I can manage these 4 things for the next 30 days, I will be back on a successful, healthy path!!!

So who wants to join me...what have you been struggling with and how can we work together to overcome our hurdles!!!

Jackie!!!
