I just checked off week 1. And I was down 2.2 lbs from my start. This is a good time to be doing this, so much good fruit to choose from and I was gifted with organic nectarines, yum. This week was easy as I do eat well, it just gets boring at times.

How has logging your food been going? I have found the app helpful because I set it to remind me to log! My issue is not forgetting to log the snacks :(

Ahhhh, gotcha ENGLISHGIRL! Well that's kinda good...... If you journal your food - and KNOW it is where you need it to be - AND if the scale goes up - that just may be attributable to the water build up in you!!!

Facts are facts with the calories n journaling... if there are less calories going in.... weight MUST be going down.... OTHERWISE ... like with you SOMETHING else is going on.

Medical conditions kinda throw the rules out the window... Be gentle with yourself - let's journal and make sure what we eat is where it needs to be.... once your health is better - issues stabilized --- I'm thinking you will start seeing the results you want!!! emoticon

Good morning to you, LAURENSQUEST! I have been weighting myself every day because of water build up and the swelling in my legs. My doctor has just increased my medication to help reduce the water build up and she is the one that suggested I weigh myself each morning and write my weight down so I can bring it back with me when I see her next.

If you believe, you can achieve!

Happy Monday ENGLISHGIRL!!!

Let's commit to journaling! I am like you! IT IS SO FRUSTRATING!!!! You know... what if you just weighed once a week? Same time every week?

Also - let's re-read what is under your name - If you believe, you can achieve! emoticon

I'm up a couple of pounds, down a couple of pounds and then back up again. I have started tracking what I eat, but darn it, I can't seem to keep the needle on my scale from continuously fluctuating. What a pain!

MHutton it is a good question! If we had someone over our shoulders tracking our food for us - it would be sooo much easier! There are soo many apps out there trying to help us do this!!!

It starts with us! We need to make the commitment to journal the food we eat. How we do it - there are lots of ways - just REALLY IMPORTANT bottom line is to be AWARE of WHAT and HOW MUCH we eat!

I have to restart doing this myself! Ready? Set? Let's journal!!! If you want to be accountable - let's do this!!! Wanta? emoticon

why is it so hard to keep tracking my food? Hoping to get it straight this week. I'm starting to work part time starting tomorrow now until June then I think I will be off because hubby won't be able to get OT if I work til 1 and he doesn't want to send our son to my moms anymore if we don't have to.

Wondering how you are doing with the sweets issue...

Question - have you always had the sweet tooth?

The goal to get rid of the sweet craving - by not eating the sweets.... sounds like a diet... in my experience when I forbid myself something - I CRAVE IT MORE!!!

What if your sweet is half a serving? Maybe your body will get used to this?

Please let me know!?!!?

I have been on SparkPeople for a while and just can't quit eating sweets. I am working with a diabetic educator to try to curb this problem. My goal is to eat mini meals and get rid of the sweet craving and I heard that eating mini-meals help! I know a bunch of what we are learning in week one but did it anyway!

Since starting over Sunday I tracked 2 of 3 days. I did go to Wendy's for dinner but got a grilled chicken and salad instead of fries and gave my pop to my son. I won't lie I did drink some. Today I'm feeling pretty good about my food intake. Need to get more water and a workout too yet.

Good day!!!

Good job on getting the planner and tracking. You should also plan your exercise. My plan is to do cardio at least 20 minutes after work, which is in a few minutes!

Can't wait to see what next week brings my way. Now if I can beet this cough thing Gavin is giving me. My throat is bothering me a bit and I am coughing a lot. I think my throat is bothering me cuz my nose is draining down my throat. My nose isn't running. Strangest feeling I am having.

After work I'm going to stop by the store and pick up a weekly calender to start jotting my things down. I saw a few ideas on Pinterest. I love that place. LOL today I grabbed grapes and unsweet applesauce on my way out the door. No breakfast....I know bad. Stopped at Subway for lunch. Sticking to 1 cookie for desert. The other 2 are for my kiddos. Need to plan more but not to bad. Tracked yesterday and today so far. Even dinner and snacks. Excited to see where this takes me.

ok completed week 1 for me but still do not know how to conquer the sweet tooth, my RD says to allow for it within my calorie ranges. But 1 thing I have noticed the more or harder I work out the less satisfying the taste of my favorite soda, Dr. Pepper

Feeling pretty good so far this week! Trying to eat 7-10 servings of fruits and veggies every day. Good mental clarity. Think I need to eat more fat like avocados and nuts. Staying away from soda and dairy and meat. Excited for this month!

I did a 2 week plan with no grains AT ALL. I missed the bread, but after a few days I was feeling full without all the simple carbs. You can do this! I just started another 2 weeks. This includes only a couple of grains (like oats), but is otherwise low carb......

You don't have to eat salad at every meal to eat healthy!!! You'll burn yourself out so quickly. I am currently doing this:

Maybe it will give you some ideas? Sometimes it is salad, sometimes other stuff. I am currently on day two.

Hi Sana0825 - This first week is about finding out how many calories should you be eating... using the food tracker on Spark People... to lose weight, maintain weight or to gain weight.

This week is also about considering snacks... whether they are something that will help you on your journey.

Does this help? emoticon

Day 1 for me! I've been working on dropping weight and toning for the last several months. I've been stuck for a while now. My measurments are showing a little bit of progress but I haven't seen a big change on the scale. So, I'm hoping this will jump start my system into droping a few pounds over the next few weeks. I've dropped the weight before. So, I know what works (or did work) for me. This time it just isn't going away like before. But, I'm not giving up!!

It's my first day on this team but 9 days ago i started working on not bingeing or overeating and some days I thought I was just going to gorge myself silly but I didn't. I'm down 4.5 lbs and although I'm grateful for the weight loss, I'm more grateful for not bingeing or overeating. Best wishes!!

StinkerBinker, I cut out carbs and that has done wonders for me too. I find it hard to eat all of the calories that I am being prodded to eat by my fitbit. The more steps I take the more calories it tells me that I have left to still eat. I try not to go over 1500 per day. My doctor told me that my goal should be in the range of 1200 to 1500, but try to stay on the lower end. That's the goal I am working toward right now.

good job staying away from those donuts!

week 1, day 1 for me. every time i start over with tracking calories, i wonder why my range is so low! even eating at the top of my range (1550) never feels like enough with exercise. so this time around i'm trying to cut out bread completely. I KNOW! how can one live without bread? well, i've been doing it for about two weeks already and i must say i do feel better. i can have a couple small fruit/veggie snacks during the day (and need to) if i don't fill up on bread. emoticon

week 1 day 1 - A good day. I read the article on freezer foods and took the quiz on portion distortion 11 out of 16 correct. That was not very good. I'm going to read it again!

Already knew my calorie range, just can't seem to hit it emoticon Don't do more than 3 meals per day because it tends to cause a 12-hour 'grazing' period with me emoticon and I don't really get hungry throughout the day anyway.

Hi Everyone!

I'm truly excited about this bc I'm in a medical walking boot (left foot/heel) until 8/28! emoticon

It has been 2 weeks in it already.. *sigh*

I was working out 5 x a week and doing everything correctly.. Stretching b4/warm up and cool down, but during a work out I ruptured my Achilles Tendon/Heel..

I can only do Upper Body (while sitting) and Crunches... My body is in shock..

This is just what I need to help and stay on track!

Hello everyone. When I am trying to lose weight I have a tendency to not get enough calories through out the day and then I eat at night. So I would like to overcome this battle.

Hi! This is my day 1 week 1. My problem is that I love to read while eating. I tend to over eat when doing this. I would love to eat without distractions but the reality is I don't enjoy food without books. I need to over come this problem.

I got my blood work back, and am not happy. I found out my glucose is a little high and my cholesterol is 245 and the bad one is 183. I do have pills for cholesterol just forget to take them. I am trying to eat better, sometimes it's just so hard. I had a plan to fix some cream tuna and have it on whole wheat bread, but when me and my husband went to the store he got a pizza. So of course I ate some of the pizza. I need some help with idea's for breakfast that I could make the night before or something that does not take a lot of time to make the day of. I wake up at 3 am and am out the door by 4 am. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been working at tracking my nutrition.

Some days get away from me - I take a family member for daily treatments and I have my little granddaughter with me also during the week.

I don't plan daily menus. I decide what to eat when meal time comes. It works better for me.

I found that when planning my meals ahead of time I almost always changed them at the last minute and was wasting too much food.

I am not into making fancy meals. I prefer to eat simple.

I just make sure that when I shop I buy all the right foods.

I've joined this team to rekindle my healthy lifestyle, over the past year I've struggled with my eating habits as I've been dealing with other issues. Now that I've sorted out everything else in my life, my goal is to return to focusing on just me and my health, starting with refreshing my dietary habits!

Last night I cleared out the fridge of all the food I'd let go bad over the past few weeks and picked up some fresh arugula, celery, tomatoes and kohlrabi. My goal for the upcoming 4 weeks is to allow myself one night a week of dining out at a healthy establishment, the rest of the time I will cook dinner at home.

I will also ensure I am visiting the farmer's market every weekend to pick up some local fresh produce, I will start bringing lunch with me to work instead of always grabbing sandwiches at the local deli and I'm going to add more vegetarian dishes into my recipe collection.

Rather than aiming for being perfect, just aim to be little bit better today than you were yesterday.

I have joined this team before and was not able to get started. Now I am giving it another go.

I was on a short vacation this past week. I ate less because I was busy and I also did a lot of walking which was not planned.

I was feeling so good that I decided , since I got this unexpected " boost", I would keep going.

I made a spicy tabouli with raisins and pine nuts that I like to snack on in the middle of the afternoon. The couscous helps keep the hunger at bay and the raisins and nuts help with cravings.

hi there,
I try to eat balanced food and because of multiple food allergies do not eat much processed food. I do find it challenging at times because I am allergic to artificial sweeteners. on a plus side, I am allergic to corn syrup, and HFCS too ( all corn products). I use sugar in raw, honey, molasses and 100% fruit juice, however, it does make it difficult for calorie count control.
I do my best and try to find alternatives with fruit snacks, fruit cups, and dried fruits as an alternative to my sweet tooth cravings.
any other ideas for snacks ideas would be great.

Hello everyone, hope you area all eating well.
No eating out except once a month when my son takes me into the city and we make a full day of it - then it's a 6" Ham and lettuce and mustard Subway. I bring my 3 cup water bottle to make sure I get rehydrated throughout the day
I am daily workingon an increase my raw food intake - I do all my own cooking and very rarely use a canned product
Every day I make sure I stay within my caloric range and I am also tracking the minor nutrients not included in the packaged foods to see how much I actually am getting from my natural foods.
Working at making sure I get the full 9 glasses of water (having a 3 cup water bottle helps me divided my drinking between morning, noon and evening).

To me HEALTH means Energy. Stamina. Flexibilty. A relatively pain free body. Enjoying healthy food. You are your body, and your weight loss efforts will succeed exactly to the extent that you mange to do the work on behalf of your embodied self. I buy my veggies 2 to 3 times a week so I will not lose them.
My husband and I both love salads, we have a salad with our meals nearly every night and I try to make different salads so we will not get bored.
However ceaser salad is always a hit for both of us.

I found that if I buy fruits & vegetables for the week I can't eat it fast enough before it goes bad. Now I spit the week up and stop at the market every 3 days.

I prefer fresh vegetables steamed. I also buy the frozen steamers.

Weekly planning does not work for me.

It's also very easy to freeze your own produce if it's on the verge of going bad. Or you could look at composting. There are small composting systems you can buy or make that will fit anywhere (even inside your house or apartment) that don't smell. If you won't use the compost you can usually sell it for a bit of money which is nice.

One step at a time is the fastest you can go

Fermented food is so good for you! And I love the taste. I'll just grab a bowl of sauerkraut and eat it straight. Some people think I'm weird though.

I also enjoy making kombucha, which is fermented tea. You need a kombucha scoby (mushroom) to make it but it's incredibly easy and very sweet to drink.

One step at a time is the fastest you can go

Thanks so much! I've made the large batches of kraut in the fall, but this will be fun to try with some new ingredients. Naturally fermented veggies have lots of helpful probiotics, too, I've heard.

Sauerkraut is so easy! I have an old style crock that I use for it but I imagine you could use a big jar as long as the sides are straight.

The main ingredient is cabbage but I also add whatever vegetables and fruits are kicking around the house (onions, garlic, spinach, apples, beets, etc... I wouldn't use citrus fruits or really soft ones like banana though)
Shred the cabbage and thinly slice/shred the other produce.
Take a large bowl and start placing your ingredients in it, stopping every 2 minutes to sprinkle a couple tbsp of salt over. Once you've got all your produce in the bowl you want to massage it. Be really mean to it until liquids start releasing. Once it's a bit sloppy you put it in to your crock (or jar) and really pack it in there hard. I find doing it in chunks instead of all at once is the best way. Now take a plate that fits in the mouth of the crock (or jar) and place it in. You want a little bit of room around the plate so it doesn't get stuck but it should cover almost all the surface. Fill a jar with water and close it up. Place it on the plate to weigh it down and cover the whole thing with a dish cloth. Let it sit for 24 hours. If after this time the brine hasn't risen above the plate you'll want to make a brine and pour it in. I can't remember the exact measurements for the added brine though.

Once the brine has risen above the plate you can place the sauerkraut in a cool, dark place and let it sit for 3 days. Taste it after 3 days and every day thereafter until it acquires the flavor you want. If a scum forms on the surface of the brine just scoop it off. The sauerkraut is protected from germs under the surface of the brine.

Hopefully that helps you out. If you like spicy sauerkraut then try adding some jalapeños or other peppers. Good luck :)

How do you do the sauerkraut? In jars? Maybe like doing kimchee? What do you put in it? Thanks for any info.

I prefer frozen veggies to fresh, I find that I am just taking the fresh ones for a trip from the store to my fridge, then to the trash! emoticon So frozen is the way I go, it's easier, I can buy in bulk and have a variety on hand, even if some of them would be out of season fresh-wise.

I really like the stir fry veggies at Costco. There's even some mushrooms. I made a big pot of brown rice and put it in the fridge and whenever I can't think of what to cook I have some already made rice and some frozen stir fry veg at a moment's notice.

It is nice to be able to grab something healthy from the freezer. I don't remember the last time we bought frozen vegetables but between my partner and I we eat lots and lots of veggies. Sometimes I use the rest to make sauerkraut. We buy frozen fruit though because we love making smoothies.

But of course, if we freeze those cooking projects in smallish containers, we'll have quick meals on hand. My problem is that I don't keep an accurate inventory list for very long. I buy frozen veggies over fresh for the cost and for the same reason Pitter6 mentioned.

Oh, I'm just terrible for filling my freezer too full. I'm constantly pre-making soups, stews, doughs, batters, etc... I get in to these cooking modes and make way too much but it's so fun LOL!

emoticon We can waste money eating out and also with overbuying. As a single, I have found that I need to buy a lot of frozen veg's. Many fresh, are throw out, because they have gone bad. I do set up the crock pot a least once a week and clean out the vegs and make a soup, but you have only so much space in the freezer, for soup.

Lord, bless my diet buddies and help me met my weight goals

I buy the big spinach bags from Costco and throw two handfuls in to a berry smoothie everyday. Such an easy way to get a really good serving of fruits and veggies and you really can't taste the spinach. I tend to avoid the other bagged salads unless they have arugula in them which is so expensive on it's own but I love the stuff! I actually don't even like salads all that much which is funny since I'm a vegetarian.

When I added up how much I was spending eating out....it made the bagged salads look much better. Easy, tasty, and inexpensive. I really need to spend more time cooking too......

It is typically hot food weather here as well but my apartment is always so warm that I think a cooler, raw diet might actually help. -35 outside and my apartment still hasn't dropped below 78 degrees. And we haven't turned the furnace on even once this winter. At least the hydro bills will be low LOL!

And I will definitely have fun with these goals. I absolutely love trying new recipes and new food styles. The only "not fun" challenge will be the eating out. We eat out 3-4 and sometimes more times a week. Not necessarily unhealthy stuff but it's just too much money to be spending when we have perfectly good food at home.

Good job! These are do able goals......now make them fun!

I have been working on the eating out less....and on eating more raw. I don't do 65% but I do more than I used to do. Now I figure out what I can do that is not processed. It is hot food weather here.

Well, I'm already challenging myself so why not join an actual challenge? I am aiming to lose around 40 pounds and to get in to wicked shape. My first steps are to stop eating out (oh man, we waste SO much money on eating out) and to up my diet to 65% raw which I will gradually increase as time goes on.
So, week 1:
-No eating out (except for Christmas brunch with my Nana because that's special)
-Increase my raw food intake
-Stay within my caloric range

Yay! :)
