Jeanne - About 10 days after opening a new bag of the Blue Buffalo, Phoenix started vomiting up most of his meal, undigested, about 8 hours after being fed. We took him off the food right away, took it back to the store, got a different bag of the same food
Again, about 10 days later the vomiting started all over again, only this time he had an almost 5 minute long Grand Mal seizure.. Got him into the vet within 20 minutes, taking all food, treats, etc. with us as well as a sample of the regurgitated food.
At that point the vet didn't think it was food related, but couldn't come up with any other ideas, so started him on a very gentle gastroenteritis type of diet. The vomiting and Grand Mal seizures continued for about 3 weeks before stopping completely. By that time we were making all of his food ourselves, following a very specific formulated recipe by nutritionist Hilary Watson ( a Canadian working out of the University of Guelph / Ontario Veterinary College).
By the time we got finally got Phoenix eating properly again, the vets decided that his digestive system, as well as his immune system would most likely never be the same again. The Grand Mal seizures stopped for good roughly 3 - 4 weeks after taking him off the Blue Buffalo food, but had certainly destroyed a fair bit of his brain cells in the process, He developed some neurological issues as well.
The company gave us absolutely ZERO back up throughout the whole episode, vehemently denying any culpability on the part of Blue Buffalo whatsoever, BUT were "nice " enough to send us a tiny (costs $5 up here) bag of dog treats!!!!
We heard of the multi - billion $ class action law suit that came along a few months later - a number of dogs had died / suffered multiple symptoms - seizures, liver, kidney damage ( or complete failure) BUT... since we are Canadian were not allowed to take part in the suit.
Every time I see one of the ads on the television claiming how superior a food it is, it makes my blood boil.
