CAGLE85, best wishes on your job hunt. I was in your shoes last year. It was a very frustrating time, I had a few interviews and even decided to have my name removed as a candidate because the company just felt wrong.
Tell everyone you know that you are looking and make sure you do have a great resume. No matter how crazy the time for me was, I just remembered that one day I would work again so beyond anything just know there is a job out there for you.
Don't settle and remember above all to remain positive. I have a great job, not making a lot of money but I love what I do and it is great for me at this time. Hang in there.

Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.

That was something I was interested in taking a class in when I was in high school. They didn't have anything like it in college when I went there. Unless I had gotten into vet school, that is. I wasn't allowed to take the high school class when I got there because the teacher said I was too stupid (though I did get a B in his regular class -- the radiology class was summer school). Prejudice on teachers part is so wrong.

I was interested in going into radiology, but ran out of money after I got my associates. Maybe I'll look into that again.

Thanks everyone. : )

I was not trying to say go into medical things like med tech, but used that as a suggestion to do specified training/schooling if you are wanting to go through more schooling. I went to college for 5 years and couldn't get anything anywhere after that. One thing it takes forever and a lot more money to go through because there is so much of it that is general and not even related to the major. Unless what you are interested in specifically says they require a college degree like a BS or MS I would look at specific training in the schools.

I used to work in Staffing for a major corporation and also did consulting with people who had been laid off. Here is the way most people get a job: networking.
First, use family, friends and, yes, even the company laying you off, to help you. Ask them if they have any contacts at companies you may be interested in. Then ask if they can help you make contact with these people so you can at least get a phone conversation or perhaps a brief meeting. Make sure you research the company on the Internet first. For every dead end, ask if that person can recommend someone else to talk to and so on. Don't get hung up on people "rejecting" you. Don't leave any opportunity untaken - for instance if you you know the guy or gal behind the deli counter, tell them you are getting laid off the next time you are getting cold cuts. Ask them if they know of any opportunities or people you could talk with.
Check out the job board www.indeed.com - it's the best out there as it aggregates all the jobs from the other boards.
On training, make sure it will enhance your chance to land a job at the end - otherwise - you've wasted time. Good luck. Remember your full-time job now is finding another job.

Back in 2010 the company I was working for decided to close it's doors after it finished up it's current projects. I was one of the first to go. I was lucky and got a job right away( with a huge pay cut unfortunately). The best advice I can give you is to let everyone you know that you are looking. That way if there is an opening you have a chance of getting someone to fast track your resume to someone who will at least look at it. There are still hundreds of applicants for every job posted.

PetSmart is one of the places my daughter actually got an interview with, and as a dog trainer - right up her alley, naturally . The 2 people conducting the interview stopped it mid way, once they found out that she had been doing competitive Obedience with our dogs since she was a young kid.

They said point blank that the company did NOT want anyone who had that kind of experience doing their training,. They would only hire people who had no prior experience with any kind of dog training!!! They would provide all the training necessary for their employees to give quality training to their customers.....

The training that PetSmart ( at least in my part of Canada) provides for their employees to be Certified Trainers consists of watching a couple of videos . There is absolutely NO hands on training at all.

Almost every time we're in one of the local PetSmart stores I cringe when I see some of the stuff their trainers / employees are doing with the dogs they are training or selling products for. Dangerous things like wrapping any excess amounts of leashes around the wrist or selling anyone a "pinch collar" for any reason under the sun - not properly fitting said collar , nor showing the person how to use it properly. I really find it hard to keep my mouth shut whenever I see stuff like that going on.

Sorry about the rant, but this is something that really irritates me - supposedly "knowledgeable" people giving out potentially dangerous information to others who trust that they are being given the correct answers / solutions - especially when said people are being paid and labelled as 'certified trainers'.

As the old saying goes --- " A little knowledge can be dangerous in the wrong hands "

Good Luck with your job hunt, and if it leads you to do dog training then I hope you find that you truly enjoy it! It can be such a rewarding job!

Thank you, guys. My resume is so ugly, but there is a company that will help me out for free. I found a group that will help pay for training, which is great.

We have 2 Petsmarts that are hiring, right now in my area! Dog training, might be a career path for me that I never considered. I would have more of a passion for it than medicine.

I also wish I had more to offer you. Back in 2012, after 16 years, my hubby decided it was time for a career change and stopped teaching high school math. He had no idea it would be that hard for a well educated, highly motivated, individua lto find another job. He was out of work for 2 years befoe he took a much lower paying job that now has him traveling out of state almost every other week and I think he may be more miserable than he was teaching - but he comvinced not to go back. I know the job market is looking up and I hope you have more luck than he did - just keep trying! Good luck!

I'm probably not one who can suggest much, since I always had trouble finding a job (more because of looks than capability), but I would say that if you do go back to school to go for the specific thing you want to do, like going for med. tech if that is what you are interested in, go to a place that specifically trains for that and not more general, and one that includes an internship in the training. I often had the same problem as Kathy's daughter -- over qualified because I had a college degree. When I went for a job that had to do with my degree I got turned down because I was from the city and wouldn't know anything about large animals (degree in Animal Science), had a degree in large animals so wouldn't know anything about small animals or, in one case, didn't look enough like Briget Bardot (however it's spelled) so I wasn't cute enough to work for them. That was many years ago and some doesn't apply now, but is my opinion.

So sorry to hear you are getting laid off. That kind of stress is never easy to deal with, even if you are fortunate enough to have something just as good or maybe even better fall into your lap at the same time. ( Wishful thinking, I know)

Jeanne suggested pretty much what I would have said too. Sometimes I think it's simply a matter of being in the right place at the right time.....

My youngest DD graduated from University almost 4 years ago and is still unemployed, after putting out more than 4,000 resumes. She is constantly told she is either over-educated (c'mon, really??? all she has is a B.A. in Sociology) or that she has no experience. She is lucky that she can still live at home, much as I'm sure she would rather be out on her own! To make matters worse, she has nearly $55,000 in student loans to pay back. She has now stopped putting her university degree on her resumes, in the hopes of getting any kind of job at all.

My 2nd youngest went to the USA to finish his education, and had a signed contract as a Senior Research Engineer (for a major world renowned company) 10 months BEFORE finishing his Ph.D. in Bio Chemical Engineering, and started at $150,000 US with full benefits. They both finished school within 30 days of each other, which made it even more frustrating for my DD.

The job market is really no better here in Canada than it is in the USA, unless you are very lucky, like my son was. I hope you find something that you enjoy doing, ASAP!!!

I am so sorry to hear you are getting laid off. It is hard to get a job with this economy. When my Hubby was looking for a job there would be 1,000 people after the same job. He is in Computer Operations. He finally found a job, but part time. So that might be why you haven't had any calls about a job. There are so many people looking. Have you updated your resume to meet today standards? You can find articles online on what wording to use, or not to use, so your resume sticks out. Or maybe you can find someone to help you out. Not sure if you would enjoy this type of job, but Petco, and Petsmart is always hiring. Wish I could help you.

This really isn't the group for this, but I sorta feel like this group is my home so I want to share.

I'm losing my job in about a week and half. I'm just so confused as to what I'm suppose to do now. I really didn't like collections, but I made better money than if I go back to customer service or food service. Do I try to go back to school? What do I want to do with my life? I've applied for a few places, and my resume is getting ignored and rejected.

I've saved for this possibility, but I would love to hear how you all have dealt with similar situations.
