I just found your post and am writing to say how sorry I am, that I know exactly how you feel and what you are going through. My beloved, precious Robin, my Old English Sheepdog on my homepage, died the same day. We had to have him pts after an aggressive cancer was diagnosed less than three weeks earlier. I spent the last week sleeping on the settee as the haemangiosarcoma (a bit like leukaemia) had caused a bleed which had made him blind and he was unhappy going upstairs. He was still happy enough, it wasn't a hugely painful cancer and he was still eating well, but he'd had enough on the Sunday and it was time. I was inconsolable for days but am coming to terms with it slowly. He's the 12th dog we've lost in 24 years of fantastic dog ownership, it doesn't get any easier.

I wrote a blog a few days ago, 'Goodbye Robin - Time to Smile Again' and it helped me to deal with things now that my very special shadow had gone to Rainbow Bridge. It was cathartic to do that.

You may be right - your Pippin may have been spared a protracted illness even though his passing was tragic. Please don't dwell on guilt but smile for the wonderful years you had with Pippin. My thoughts are so, so with you - and remember that Pippin and Robin became travelling companions on their journey to Rainbow Bridge on that Sunday.

I didn't waver from my healthy eating at all when Robin was so ill, but today I've been careless and have notched up more calories than I should have. It's a one-off as I promised him I'd stick to things for him. It hasn't been a binge, I just had a sneaky pick at a couple of things. Tomorrow is, as you say, a new day.

Hang on in there.

This is so sad to hear. I do know how you feel about feeling responsible. We almost lost ours from eating a rag. We had to give her laxatives and it finally passed.
When she was a pup, she had a huge stuffed tiger that she would run around the back yard with. We came home and she was screaming. The tail had become totally wrapped around her tongue. Thankfully we were able to cut it off but her tongue was swollen.
These things happen, and we aren't able to watch them 24/7.
Please accept my condolences.

We have Roo sticks over here in Australia and Beef Tendons are usually good to chew on, they don't go soft like rawhide

I am so sorry you lost your little Pippin. I probably would have eaten more than 2,800 calories after going through that. You didn't know this would happen, and you thought the rawhides were fine for your dog. We used to give rawhide bones to our dogs all the time, but lately I have stopped doing it. I've been reading some things about rawhide, that it has lots of chemicals in it that are bad for the dogs, then can build up over time, and can cause medical problems after a while.. Does anyone know any safe chew things for the doggies?

So sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose a little one that is like a member of the family. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

You are right, the Lord does work all things for good, but I know that will not ease the pain in the short run. May time will allow you to replace your guilty feelings with memories of all the joy little Pippin brought to your life. God Bless, and hang in there!

So sorry for your loss! That might have been a lucky break for the little dog but it doesn't change that you will miss him mightily. I will remember no rawhide for little Chica, ever!

My heart breaks for you and your DH. My Lab gets a chew every night and expects it at 7 PM. I will say that at least twice I had to Heimlich her when she was younger. She would flip over on her back while chewing it. Again I am so very sorry for your loss.

So very sorry for your loss. My DH has said right along that we shouldn't be giving them. My sable Sheltie, Cedar, swallows them when they are still too big, and then throws them up the next day. This has convinced me that they won't ever get another one.
Again, sorry for your loss, my heart aches for you.

I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. I lost one of my little ones at the start of January and it still hurts.

Please try not to blame yourself, it will not bring you sweet pup back.

So sorry for your loss. I have heard bad things about rawhide, but the choking wasn't it. I have been pretty leery of getting something like that, but lately leery of other things they have for dogs and cats.

I hope that you can get past your guilt feelings. Anything can cause a problem with the dogs and it isn't your fault. I know how it feels to feel guilty about things like that, though, because I do about those I've lost. Giving your little one a treat does not make you guilty.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a close call with a rawhide chew with a little teacup poodle I had. I left it on the bed and I woke up to her choking. She had gotten it stuck in her throat. I rushed her to an emergency clinic and luckily they were able to extract it. From that day forward, that was it for me and rawhide products. She had an angel watching out for her that day.

May your sweet little pom rest in peace.

My sweet Pom died Sunday choking on a rawhide. I blame myself, if I had paid attention I would have been able to save him. It doesn't matter what anyone says, I still feel guilty over this. But, he was almost 8 years old and did have a great life. The week leading up to this accident, he had been needing to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. I'm trusting that God took him now to spare him and us long years of suffering that was about to start.

I have forced myself to work out and continue to eat right. Tonight I allowed myself a cheat day at my co-worker's going away party and my total calories for the day were 2800. I worked out a little but not very much. I'm not going to feel bad, this was my time to let loose and grieve a little more for my doggie.. Tomorrow is a new day.

Prayers for all those struggling over the grief of their lost pets. emoticon
