The Night Before
There was some good laughs, but I think there could have been more. It was festive and fine; but not a movie that I would see twice. A little predictable. It seemed like they had to add scenes to make the movie longer for the sake of having a longer movie (like it could have been a really good one hour TV special, but they needed to make it the length of a feature film.)

The Peanuts Movie-
What a delightful, thoughtful, sincere film! Is it OK that I teared up at the end? I thought I wouldn't like the CGI animation, but I did. I feel like they kept it very faithful to the Schulz comics although, sure there were some small things that they changed. I could have done with less of the Snoopy/Red Barron story. It was never a favorite of mine personally, but I know many, many people want to see that. So, I was OK sitting through it. But give me the Charlie Brown story line any day. It really made me wish for a "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" movie version of the Broadway musical.

Spectre -
Was really looking forward to this after having enjoyed the last several Bond films. It's a good movie, but it really could have used some additional editing. (After over two hours of watching, James Bond says "It's not over yet"...and I was thinking "well, get on with it.") My other issue is the fact that I really, really liked Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation this past summer. And Spectre was a little bit similar so I felt like we've been there, done that.

Dracula (1931) English version AND Spanish version

Just saw a double feature of Dracula. I've never seen the Spanish version and wow, is it better. I didn't think that the actor who portrays Dracula is better than Bela Lugosi, but the rest of the film was better. The look, the non-choppy editing, the sound, just better. I really liked how they showed Dracula rising from his coffin. Cool.

Crimson Peak: Finally a horror film that isn't full of cheesy "scary guys". I wouldn't even call it horror. This was a story that had ghosts. But it wasn't about the ghosts. Really a well done and beautifully shot film. Jessica Chastain should get nominations for her role. This was a really awesome looking "haunted mansion". Is the red "mud" something that really exists or was that just for the story?

What a ride. I really liked Gravity two years ago, but this was better because it didn't have all of the hallucination scenes. This felt real no matter how much I kept saying "it's just a movie". The power of Perseverance! Very emotional (surprisingly so). I will be amazed if this doesn't end up being my top movie of 2015. Wow.

Classic Movie Series:
I bought tickets for the upcoming series of classic movies. Last Sunday was Psycho and today was Ghost.
Pyscho (which I have on blu-ray, but still went to see it at the theater) is always great no matter where you see it. Grade: A+
Ghost: Haven't seen it in a long, long time. Didn't realize how the "dark shadows" FX was going to look very dated (actually they looked funny instead of scary). But Whoopie Goldberg's academy award winning performance is still fresh, funny, and incredible. Whoopie makes this movie. Grade: A
Next Sunday is the Princess Bride! Which I don't think I've actually ever seen on the big screen.

The Visit: Oh when will M Night make a movie that I can't figure out before I see it (other than Sixth Sense). I'm guessing that since I know that he'll put a twist into the movie, I do my best to come up with the strangest twist before I see it and then....

This movie was funny. This movie was creepy (not scary, but creepy). Disturbing. But also funny.

I really liked the first Blair Witch movie that shot the whole film as if it was a hand-held camera. But enough is enough. Been there, done that. Enough Hollywood. This movie could have easily been made without the shaking camera that makes me nausea.

Grade: C+ (because of the shaking camera)

VACATION:
I don't like movies that rely on bathroom humor. This movie was gross and crass. And yet, I must have been in some time of gross mood, because I enjoyed it. Was it the Chris Hemsworth underwear scene? maybe. But I just kind of liked it. The movie actually has some heart. And I loved that grown-up Rusty shows pictures of all four of the actors who played the character in the other movies as if they are him. The movie makes fun of itself and the other films. It doesn't take itself seriously...and that's why I enjoyed it.

Fantastic Four 2015
I am a huge comic book fan and the Fantastic Four was my first superhero comic that I bought, so I had to see it. It has been getting a lot of bad reviews, and with so many great comic book movies coming out in the last few years, it had a lot to live up to. It was "okay". I pretty much enjoy any superhero movie because I like to see how they translate the superpowers onto the big screen. The Human Torch looked great but the Thing was too "CGIey". I am never a fan of the first movies because the origin stories are boring to me. I liked the actors and hope they make a second movie. I am sure it will HAVE to be better.

C-

P.S. The thirty minute ride on my bike to and from the theater was more of a highlight, haha.

Man from UNCLE
After seeing Mission: Impossible, this movie just doesn't rise to the same level. I know it takes place in 1960s cold war. But could we not come up with a better plot than the bad guy steeling a nuclear bomb? Really? How many movies have that plot? Seems like we've been there, done that. The action did not step it up like recent spy movies.

Armie Hammer is breath-takingly handsome. Sure, Henry has that chiseled jaw, but Armie is just yummy...maybe it was the Russian accent....I don't know.
Save this one for rental/netflicks.

I used to hate tearing Tom down and having to set it up again. The counseling is do much better in many ways. No lesson plans or grading papers at home. I lost three pounds this week. I gained seven over the summer, not too bad considering all the crap I ate. I plan on losing 50 lbs in ten months. Five a month. I think that is doable.

I have a mini-camp on Mon/Tues. with my students
Teacher institutes start on Wednesday for three days in a row
Kids come on Aug. 24th

That's why we don't get done until mid-June...

I'll be going in all this week for an hour or two here and there to get my room up and running. They make us tear our entire rooms down for the summer. It is a lot of work.

Irrational Man
Generally I enjoy Woody Allen films. Last summer's Magic in the Moonlight was light and refreshing, nothing too deep or disturbing. Midnight in Paris, I really liked.

Irrational Man seemed uneffective. What do I mean by that? The movie really didn't take me anywhere. It wasn't bad. It wasn't good. It was a little weird. Emma Stone as a college student falling in love with her professor (not an original story plot). The ending was a surprise for a Woody Allen film.

Fantastic Four
Why is everyone poo-pooing this movie? It really isn't that bad. It has a much better origin storyline than the 2005 FF movie. It did not have a great music soundtrack...very forgettable. I really liked the fresh take on the origin of the four. I liked the entire story/plot. I thought the FX were well done. The Thing looked great. Good acting (not great, but it gets the job done.)

Some issues with the movie are...
1. Toward the beginning of the film, they were using too much make-up on Reed and Sue. You can see the make-up on them. (Maybe that was bad lighting?)
2. The very very ending. Someone will need to tell me where that was and what exactly that was about.
3. Originally, they wanted to change the name of Doom. Too many fanboys complained. I think it would have been better with the name change. They should have stuck with their plans.

Grade: B

UPDATE: I've figured out why Fantastic Four movies don't work...two word: The Incredibles Remember that Pixar/Disney movie? I just watched it again. Since the characters (basically) have the same powers, no one has been able to compete with it. AND, does anyone realize that The Incredibles never really does an "origin" story. It basically starts up saying some people have special powers and become heroes. (enough said, move on) Do we really need to know WHY/HOW a person gets their powers? Can people just be superheroes and get the movie started right away? From the trailers, I'm guessing that next March's Batman v Superman will be telling us the origin of Batman. Hello, does anyone NOT know this story? Why waste our time? That's one reason I LIKED the new FF, a new take on their origin story. Not the same ol' thing that I already knew.

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation
A little background first. I really disliked the first Mission: Impossible from 1996. It confused me. I didn't get it. I didn't know who was good and who was bad.

19 years later (really? 19 years????!!!!!!!) I loved this movie. I get it. Smart film; but not impossible to follow. Great music score that incorporates the traditional MI theme by Schifrin with Pucini and Mozart. The motorcycle chase was breathtaking...I thought I was on a roller coaster. Good movie.

No this is not about a 70s porn star. It is about Sherlock Holmes... an elderly Sherlock played by Ian McKellan. Beautiful looking film (enjoyed the cinematography). "Double Indemnity"
I can't imagine how shocking this movie must have been in 1944. I can realize how many movies since 1944 have used the same plot line. I may not be able to look at Barbara Stanwyck the same again.
Grade: A-

On a side note, the movie began 50 minutes LATE due to technical difficulties. When they finally got it going they left the lights on until I went to ask them to turn them off. good grief. At least they gave all of us vouchers for a free movie. I joked that they had to send someone out to find a Blockbuster Video to rent the VHS tape.

Loved it. Very funny. Very funny. I was afraid that all of the funny stuff was shown in the trailers, but there is more than that. And the best part: NO GLOWING ROCKS! The plot of the movie had nothing to do with glowing rocks. (see past reviews about how tired I am of "the bad guy trying to get a glowing stone" plots in Marvel films).

San Andreas: Good movie to just watch and enjoy. Yes, there were some unbelievable moments that made me think "yea, right.." (cell phone service after a major earthquake? The buildings fell, but not the cell towers!) But the majority of the film was just exciting. There were moments that made me jump and an occasional "uuughghghghg" out-loud. I have no life so I spend my summer watching movies.

Aloha: Just got back from seeing Aloha. Why has this movie been so widely disliked by the critics? Don't get me wrong, it isn't Citizen Kane or anything. But I thought it was a well done film. I actually would have liked to see MORE of Hawaii. Too many interior shots. If you make a movie in Hawaii, show it off!!! There were a couple of good scenes, but it seemed to take place mostly inside buildings. I thought the story was good. And, it wasn't obvious how it would turn out in the end. Solid movie. How can you complain getting to see Bradley Cooper and John Krasinski embrace....hello!!!! Grade: B

Inside Out

First, let me say that the "short" before the movie called LAVA was horrible. That little short may have spoiled my mood for the film. Heterosexual volcanoes? Why do volcanoes need a sexual identity? Point of the story? If you wait one million years, you may fall in love. Oh goodie, how uplifting. I only have 999,955 more years to wait. Grade for the short: F

Inside Out: How depressing. Don't take your children to see this film unless you want them depressed. What was Disney/Pixar thinking??? Very colorful. At times, yes, I laughed at the "inside" jokes for adults. Imaginative in how they designed memories and feelings. But I'm not sure why all the critics are raving about this film. Compared to the Toy Story, Nemo, Incredibles, Wall-E, Up, hell even Cars was better. Please no sequel! Grade: C-

Avengers - Went to see it on Saturday. Lots of action, but sometimes overwhelming (I must be getting old). I felt like I couldn't focus on what was happening on the screen because there was too much happening at one time. Overwhelming is the best word to describe it. Also the side stories were a little overwhelming. I think they added it all so that you have to go see it twice just to understand what is going on. If you read my review of Guardians of the Galaxy, you will also know that I'm getting tired that every Marvel movie is about the Infinity stones. I really wish they had not created the whole MCU around this one story plot. I'm tired of the glowing rocks. Ultron as the villain was excellent. James Spader was very funny with his dry wit. At the beginning of the movie, they used an affect for the Scarlet Witch from horror movies (like the ring) which I really liked, but then they didn't use it later. I wish they would have. It really gave her a witch quality that I thought worked. Grade: B+

Slow, but sure.

Tootsie - Another part of my local theater's "classic movie series". Tootsie has always been on my top 20 list, but I've never seen it in a theater (as I was too young when it was first released.) Grade: A It really doesn't age. Timeless!

Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Back in 2011, the first movie was my favorite movie of the year. It was so lovely and tender. This one was a continuation of that story. But I found myself not caring as much for the characters. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't new. Grade: B

Selma - Well school was canceled due to the return of the polar vortex, so I went to see a movie. All the local kids were there to see SpongeBob.

I thought Selma was a really good movie. I know people have been remarking about the historical accuracy, but the film really works. Very emotional. People in the audience were crying. Grade: A

Giant - Another film in the "Classic" series starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean. Over three hours of what I can only describe as predecessor to the tv show "Dallas". I know I saw this film many, many years ago; but I honestly didn't remember it. It was good, but too "soap opera" for my taste. This was nominated for 10 academy awards? And it won best director??? really? really.

Slow, but sure.

Kingsman-I was worried going into this movie. Many reviews have described it as James Bond directed by Tarantino. Well, I can't stand Quentin Tarantino movies. Pulp Fiction....worst movie ever!

This movie is not as graphic as one would expect from the reviews. Don't get me wrong, you don't want to take a 10 year old to see it; but I didn't find it as graphic as described in reviews.

I enjoyed this movie. I would even pay to see it again at the theater. I enjoyed the action. I liked that the main characters were well dressed (when was the last time someone wear a suit in a movie?) I liked that they poked fun at just about every stereotype (esp. the scene in Kentucky). It was fun.

I purchased tickets for the next series of "classic" movies. Today was "All About Eve". I forgot what good movies are until watching this classic. Humor, drama, great acting (and intentional overacting since it was about stage actors.) Just great stuff.

They don't make 'em like they used to....

Mr. Turner - I became a "fan" of Turner's work back in high school when I first saw his paintings (in pictures) and studied him in humanities class (remember humanities classes?). This film really got the dirt on him and showed the realism that he lived in. Loved the cinematography (it was a beautifully shot film at times and nasty at other times.) I also really liked the music. It is difficult to be engaged in a life story when the main character is a little repulsive. Turner's life story did not hold my attention. Grade: B-

Wow, that sounds intense. I am watching some fluff I DVRed awhile ago called Tin Man. It has two parts and stars Zooey Deschanel.

Unbroken - I was kind of hoping for more Olympics in this film but it was really all about the main character's imprisonment during WWII. I like dramas but this one was really hard to watch. It made you feel like you were there suffering with them (although it was nothing like what this man endured.) This is one of those movies (like Million Dollar Baby) that I recognize as a well made film. It really makes a person think...but I never want to see it again. It was difficult to sit through. Difficult to stomach. What he lived through...what all soldiers endure during war time... heroic and sad.

I enjoyed The Interview. It had some good laughs the first 30-45 minutes and then I was ready for it to wrap up. Weak ending. It was a free pass, so no harm no foul. I needed some laughs. I wanted to see Birdman but my friend I went with had already seen it.

Hunger Games Mockingbird part I: Yes, I 'm a little behind in my movie watching. I really enjoyed this prelude to the last movie. Some reviews said it lacked action, but I think it held interest by using suspense (which I find much more exciting that action.) Grade: A-

Hobbit Battle of Five Armies: Who was counting armies? I counted 8 armies so I'm not sure why the title is Five Armies (someone wasn't counting). There were the humans, the elves, the dwarves, orc army 1, orc army 2, goblin army, bat army, and eagle army. That's not including the other monsters (worms?) that were attacking too. This movie had BAD humor. Was it suppose to be a comedy? Grade: D

I have a movie pass that expires tomorrow. I wanted to see Birdman but was talked into The Interview because my friend saw Birdman and said it was "meh". I think she is wrong but not going to make her see the same movie. So, comedy it is! I probably need some foolishness after the last two months I have had. :)

A new thread to kick off 2015!

Birdman - You've already heard the reviews of Michael Keaton's great performance, but there are more great performances in this movie from a strong cast. Seek out this movie before it's gone. Grade: A

Into the Woods - Loved the orchestrations of the songs. I love the stage version so the movie really needed to step it up. It was a perfectly designed movie version; however, I still liked the stage version better. Little Red Riding Hood's voice was a stand out. Grade: A-

Foxcatcher - Why is this being hailed for award season? I didn't think the story really merited a movie to be made about it. Grade: B-

Slow, but sure.
