While it may seem a tad bit early, popular tourist attractions become super busy and crowded especially as summer approaches. January is the perfect time to being making your summer plans.
1) Where are you going? Obviously, you need to determine where you want to go? Have a family meeting and make a list of possible destinations. Begin gathering information about the places you want to visit and start narrowing down your possibilities. If an elaborate vacation is not in your budget this year, perhaps you can visit with a family member, or plan a stay-cation at home.

2) Plan ahead If you plan on leaving the country, allow at least two (or even three) months to receive your passports. Also, make reservations for sleeping accommodations and car rentals if necessary. You'd be surprised by how quickly hotels and lodges, especially in popular travel destinations, fill-up. You also need to keep in mind that airline reservations need to be secured at least six to eight weeks prior to leaving. The closer it gets to your vacation, the more the tickets will cost.

3) Make a preliminary schedule Find out what you wish to do at your destination before you get there and do some research. If you want to visit certain museums, know the hours of operation. If you plan on visiting a particular historical site or want to participate in a special activity, determine if you need tickets in advance. Make a preliminary schedule of your activities and use it as source of reference.

4) Research your cell phone needs Some cell phone plans require you to pay roaming charges if you're outside of your calling area, (especially in foreign countries). Know your cell phone plan and see if there's another service your provider can offer you while on vacation.

5) Get maps and brochures Prior to leaving for any trip, get any maps and travel brochures you need via the mail or the Internet. Some automobile associations like AAA will provide you with free maps, booklets, and brochures...and even map your trip for you! Allow anywhere up to eight weeks to receive this information through the mail
