Well, I should probably just back out of this conversation, to tell the truth. I've been following Dr. McDougall since I found him in 1983, and I'm 100% a fan of his food plan and most of his work, but he's definitely anti-fat-people and can go really overboard in that sometimes. However, I meant no disrespect, and I will drop it.

Dr McDougall is not advocating focusing on body weight as a health measure. He used the chart to illustrate that losing a lot of weight eating a starch based diet is not unhealthy. When you cut out animal products and oils from your diet, you will naturally lose weight and realize immeasurable health benefits. Losing weight for the sake of losing weight is bad. Eating a nutritious diet and losing weight, if you are overweight, is completely different.

I don't understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced vegetarian diet is considered drastic, while it is medically conservative to cut people open and put them on cholesterol lowering drugs for the rest of their lives. ~Dean Ornish

Focusing on body weight as a health measure is a bad idea, in my opinion.

The feature article in the November 2015 McDougall Newsletter is "Food, Sex, and Attractiveness Part 1: The Role of Body Weight." In the article you'll see a height and weight chart. "This chart records what Dr. Walter Kempner (founder of the Rice Diet) would have considered a reasonable adult weight in proportion to height. He also recommended that people with diabetes, heart, kidney, or blood vessel diseases should weigh l0 to l5% less than the optimum figures presented in this chart. These figures will help reassure people that they are not becoming too thin on the McDougall Diet." [Sigh! I have to get more serious about losing weight!]

This month's recipes are the same ones demonstrated in the McDougall Made Easy DVD.
