I am still tracking (as always) . However, I am looking more closely at the sauces which are in the foods I eat. I am looking forward to regaining the ability to cook my own foods again. I am learning some interesting things to try.

What are your long-term goals for dealing with sugar?

Limit desserts to the weekend and special occasions, If eating out have a 3 bite rule. Allow myself 3 tbs of dessert unless it's my own birthday.

Don't have the all or nothing attitude.

Have fruit but always pair fruit with protein.

Limit chocolate to weekends and special occasions.

What have you learned during this challenge?

I knew a lot before I started it. I have been eating relitivly well for the last year except when I have a sugar-binge. I learnt that I can eat sugar in moderation as long as it is in fruit and other high quality food...

The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your
life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on,
rely on, or blame. The gift is yours -- it is an amazing
journey -- and you alone are responsible for the quality of
it. This is the day your life really begins."

New goals:
Eat Positively
Exercise daily (that one is already achieved)
Experiment with 3-5 meals a day
Avoid binge for at least 3 weeks.

Today was my first day of the fourth week. I read some of the articles provided. Thee other thing I did was to see just what I had in the pantry. When I went shopping I compared brands paying particular attention to the added sugars.

My long term goal is to eliminate the sweets. I've tried to do moderation and I always end up over doing it. If I can find a sweet treat I can have without overdoing it that would be nice , but I haven't found one yet. I will continue to eat clean and not let myself get too hungry between meals. I love my fruits and veggies so that's a plus.

I've been working on decreasing the sugar a little at a time. My short term goals are to keep to 150 calories or less of chocolate per day, decrease my coffee intake (which includes sweetened creamer) to 3-4 per week from the current 7 per week. I eat yogurt everyday currently and will start swapping it for cottage cheese for at least one week out of every month. I will also decrease my crystal light intake to one packet every other day while at work down from one packet every day at work.

I always have fresh cut up Cauliflower, Carrots and other Veggies ready to eat - using a Tbl of light dressing as a dip. I find by having these items ready, I don't tend to eat a sandwich or cereal in the evening while watching TV. Night TV is the worst for Food Commercials...

I will not be able to cut out sugar entirely like tosca reno and others. But i will eliminate highly processed and simple sugars like candy cookies donuts. I will allow myself something 2 times per week.
The rest of time i will concentrate on how great i feel and how successful i feel

My long-term goals are to ensure that I have plenty of fresh fruit always on hand. It has been a lifesaver when sweet cravings attack. I know now that I can reach for an orange or apple instead of a cookie or sugar-laden granola bar and be much better off in the long run because of it.

I also will keep sweet treats out of my pantry as much as I possibly can. There are other sugar eaters in my house, so I can't throw it out all together, but they at least understand that it isn't healthy for them, either. I have a better toolkit now to deal with those cravings when they do arise. I can go for a walk, take a bath, fold laundry--anything to keep myself out of the treats. If I can stay away for about 10 or 15 minutes, I generally can get over the cravings and move on.

Here's to a slighly less-sweet me!

What are your long-term goals for dealing with sugar?
---
Don't bring unhealthy foods into the house. Eat before shopping.
Eat more often and more snacks so I'm not turning to sugar when hungry.

What have you learned during this challenge?
--
The cravings do reduce when you take in less sugar.
Moderation is the key. You do not have to cut it out totally.
Instead of buying it, planning to go out and enjoy a dessert once in awhile is better, as it's not in the house then to consume more and more.

This challenge has focused my mind on exactly what I eat and why. My sugar addiction is not going away, but I have learned how to tame it and recognise it for what it is. I am not a moderation type of person, if I eat one sweet, I eat the whole packet. No more "family" size packets! I am trying for a sugar free day every other day, but getting the mind to stop thinking it is being denied and sulking is not easy, but it is getting better. I know it will take more than just these 4 weeks to get myself back on track - but at least I have made a good start!

This challenge has helped me in a lot of ways and if I slip back I know I can find alternatives and refocus. I have to admit it. I will probably always prefer sugary snacks over healthier food items but I also know that I can find ways to work around it. This isn't going to happen overnight but if I keep working at it, I will see progress and do better than when I started out.

Wishing everyone on this team good success in the weeks ahead. We can do it!

emoticon Everything in moderation. I feel as though my chocolate sweet tooth has gotten smaller in taste during this challenge. I think I will continue on using my "M&M idea" of dealing with eating sweets. Eat one, make it last and see if it takes the urge away. It has worked beautifully.

I'm working on moderation - I don't think it's a realistic goal for me to completely give up sugar. Most days I do fine but I've notice it's more of a challenge when in social settings - and it seems I have a relative who is trying to sabotage me (I had to get very firm with her and it made for a few uncomfortable days). She is not someone I can avoid so I am really having to work on ways to be firm without battling it out. But in my daily moments, I've been subbing water for diet soda more often, popcorn or fruit insteady of candy and I think with a bit more attention to detail, I will be more successful in the long run.

Cutting back on sugar has been going well. Most days I can go all day with out added sugar, candy, etc.. BUT-the problem is I have to be careful not to replace sugar with something else....potato chips seem to be calling my name! Last week on a talk show I heard a woman say "It is ok to feel hungry between meals", and that seemed to be an AH-HA moment for me. I remind myself of that every time I feel like I need a snack that is not scheduled on my nutrition tracker.

My goal is to never have a large dose of sugar two consecutive days in a row, but to limit sugar intake to a day around birthdays and holidays, using no-sugar substitutes, fruits, and healthy snacks when I want the taste of something sweet or an energy boost.

I've proved that I CAN resist sugar. Not that I will avoid it altogether but I will notice when I am in need or want mode. If I am in want mode I know that by answering one question I get get me into a better place: Why do I want this? If the answer is fulfillment then my answer is get a glass of water! Great job everyone! Today is Week 4 Day 7 for me. It's still not second nature for me to avoid sweets but I feel more incontrol around them (until I have a taste, it's over). I also ran my first half marathon on Sunday! It was incredible (and by incredible, I mean gruling... but rewarding) Since then I have been trying to think of a way to share the message that SparkPeople has taught me, that you don't need to LOOK like an athlete to be active. Because I certinly do not LOOK like a runner.

Yesterday I came across a photo contest on facebook for a chance to win a pair of running shoes, I entered a photo and, suprisingly to me, I got a couple votes. The more votes I got the further to the top of the page my photo moved ensuring that even more people see it, I saw this as my opportunity to spread a message about fitness and body image. I wrote down what I was thinking and then got a couple more votes. Im now in 7th place out of 47 entries and Im really getting into it. Anyone with a facebook account can vote every 24 hours, it only take a few seconds. If you think about it, I would greatly appericate your support its about more than some free shoes now.

http://bit.ly/Htrdyb

Thanks for all the support from everyone, for this sweet tooth challange, for the photo contest AND for this whole life journey!

My goals to control my sugar intake are to definitely try and eat less processed foods and stick to more whole, raw fruits and veggies. Every once and awhile I'll let myself eat something sweet so I don't go completely crazy and binge : ) I'm going to try my best to keep tracking how much sugar is in the things I'm consuming on a daily basis. I ate a Cliff bar this AM and didn't check the wrapper till after I was done, 21 g. of sugar, I almost flipped! Definitely going to be more careful going forward. : D

My goals are to be more aware of the added sugar, even in food you would think is good for you. That implies reading the labels, getting to know what I buy and stick to the best available. Another goal is to never ever leave the house hungry and/or without a snack, because even if I am not hungry, I might become hungry or have a craving coming, and even if I know that it will go within 10 min. if I am at a cash or something it would be more difficult... So I will do like when I was pregnant, I will always have something to eat in my purse... Something healthy and not sweet.

End of week 4 for me. My long term goals are to be watchful of added sugar in foods and limit processed foods.
I have learned that my afternoons are the worst for me so I try to keep busy or schedule my workouts then. I'm glad I took this challenge so I could really see where I was with sweets and sugar. Thanks!!!!

One of the things that I've learned during the challenge is that I really do need to take a complete break from sweets for at least two days to sort of break the addiction. If I keep eating sweets EVERY day is so much harder for me to eat in moderation or say no to temptations. But, once I've taken that break, it's easier.

I have lost weight which is the big plus of the challenge! I have replaced sugar with yogurt, sugarless gum, Splenda, and diet Coke. Today I stared at doughnuts in a bakery and was tempted to buy one, but decided not to. The first bite is the best anyways! Thanks for the sugarless support!

SP_MELINDA--

My long-term goals are to not get into the sugar rut again, ever. It is poison to my body, being a diabetic. I must be vigilant in keeping my carbs low enough as to not cause a carb craving.

I've learned that by controlling the amount of all carbs, even the good ones, that I have control of the my carb cravings. Giving up sugar didn't help with the carb cravings. I had to limit the amount of total carbs in my day. I am following Atkins and am still in Phase 1.

I just finished up the 4 weeks today and am happy to say my blood sugar numbers are down, my doctor says my labwork is "Phenomenal", and I lost 7.5 lbs.

I'm a happy woman. Thanks Spark People!

I am redoing Week 4 because I would have liked to have better results. It was up and down last week...one day on and one day off. My sweet tooth isn't giving up without a fight but then I'm not making it too difficult for it either. I will be looking for better choices this week and not giving in when I feel I want to having something.

Watch out for the sugar in that too! Make it yourself and add fruit for flavor!

The only issue I continue to have is buying a real soda at the gas station once or twice a week. I am having a hard time telling myself not to stop, and that I need the energy to go wherever I'm going

I'm going try iced tea next time.........

This challenge has made me much more aware of the sugar that I had been eating. It has not been easy but I am definitely making better choices. I would love to totally eliminate processed foods with sugar that is my goal one little step at a time.

starting week 4. I plan to step it up. Really unless you are eating clean it's almost impossible not to get some sort of sugar. But then again, fruit has it's own sweetener. emoticon

This has been a tough challlenge for me. Some days have been good and others I have failed. I seem to crave SWEETS! Once I start to eat one; I don't seem to be able to Stop. But will keep trying.

Okay, last month I blew my goal. This month I am determined to "Streak" through April without eating out. I honestly believe that is my downfall. Not even once cuz once I start I spiral. Hence the added 7 pounds! I WAS gonna order in (that counts) because I don't have "real food" but I looked in my semi-bare fridge. I found an apple and peanut butter (food pantry, yuck) and lime flavored yogurt and grape nuts.I think I'm going shopping tomorrow LOL!

Bought the Easter Basket Candy in moderation for my kids, but accidentally ate some of it while packing the baskets cuz i didn't have a plan and wasn't very serious about avoiding sugars. Drat!

So far I'm really doing good. I know that I can keep doing this and think I just have to stay positive and believe in myself. It is interesing what I have learned on this journey. I'm really going to do this.

I would substitute that Splenda stuff with pure natural honey. Not a lot but just enough to sweeten it and add antioxidants. Win-win.

How about a smoothie made with home made yogurt (plain, no sugar) frozen fruit, splenda and water? I have one each morning. They are delicious. You can make plenty to keep the left over for thirsty snacks throughout the day. Splenda doesn't cause high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and obesity as sugar does in many forms.
