I had my snacks with me yesterday. Spent time walking and talking and getting to know a few of our Washington team members. I said I was hungry and all 4 of us pulled a healthy snack out! Go Spark! Love the healthy habits I now have.

Week 3 already! I am staying strong but need to stop and get more fruits and veggies. Meeting a couple of our Washington State ladies tomorrow morning and I want some snacks to carry me through the day. I stood in line at the grocery store with all the candy calling my name. I didn't listen! I am doing this!

I love the tips about eating fruit when I have sugar cravings. Last night after dinner I was craving something sweet, and knowing I shouldn't eat anything sugary, I had a banana instead followed by unsweetened peppermint tea. And it satisfied my craving. Woo hoo!!!!!!!!!

JHDIETNOW, Wow! Congratulations on no added sugar for all that time! I'm still working on trying to get rid of my cravings for sweets. This has been a lifelong battle. I don't have a problem with not having added sugars in my other foods or pop. I cut out or way down on those starting when I was 19 years old ( I am 71 now). My sweet tooth is still going strong!

LINDAINALABAMA, I can't handle Atkins Bars. I over ate them and had problems with that sugar substitute! It did not sit well with me and gave me "gas".

Week 3 and I am not giving in!

I don't know how I got to this page, but computer opened here and at the bottom of the page was a post I wrote last October. It is now February and I have not had one single thing that contains added sugar since that post!!! Amazing. Seeing those words"pre diabetic" on the page with my lab results made it extremely easy to stop eating sugar. It isn't even tempting. Hopefully some of you who read this post will be able to quit sugar before seeing such ugly words written beneath your name on a lab slip! I wish you all best in your efforts.

I sure enjoy reading everyone's thoughts on sugar and giving up sugar. When I don't have sugar in the house which is always my goal, I might over eat on Atkins bars. They are low carb only for but having more than one still feeds into that sugar addiction. Changing my thoughts changing my habits. Linda emoticon

did very well with food today. much more focus now that I am pre-diabetic!!! no added sugar today, less carbs and calories than usual but within range. Best part--we ate dinner out and I did very well. shrimp stuffed sole, broccoli, salad, only one tiny piece of bread, water to drink

I am working on week 3. I've written a blog about my findings so far on my spark page. Although I think that substitutes are a good idea, usually my downfall is eating sweets between meals when I'm not really hungry and once started, keeping eating more sweets---and more---and more------Since I'm not hungry I don't usually get a substitute, although there are plenty of them in the cupboard and the refrigerator. I did find that drinking an extra glass of water in the late afternoon or having a big glass of ice tea is very helpful.

Week Three and I am convinced that I need a salt intervention not sugar. I have fruit all over the house dried and fresh, but I bring home one bag of chips and I cannot stop until they are gone then I want popcorn or french fries. This is a much harder battle for me. Sugar I only eat a little once in awhile.

Week 3 hit the spot with Christmas. Accountability worked out great and all was handled with moderation. First time in the past 4 years that Blood Sugars have stayed close to normal range for meals and snacks.

Looking forward to 2017! emoticon emoticon

I have been pretty successful swapping fruit for sugar; however, even after eating the fruit, I have to distract myself from still giving into a sugar craving. It's still difficult, but I find eating fruit, trying to keep up with water intake, and changing my environment even if going for a short walk, has helped. Favorite low sugar snack: unsweetened apple sauce (it's easy to pack and grab when you are on the go).

I seem to be going "above and beyond" what the program is doing because I'm not eating any sugar free- no sugar added products either... and this week it told me to switch out products with them. No thanks. seems like something that should of been done in the first or even the second week. ;)

How are you doing with your sugar swaps?

Doing great. Fruit is finally sweet enough for me.

How do you bust your sugar cravings?

Fruit. But I found that most of the time if I'm craving sugar, which I really haven't done since the first week that it's because I'm hungry, and eating a normal snack of any kind will give up the craving.

What is your favorite low-sugar snack? I'm trying really hard to not eat anything with sugar in the ingredients, so I'm not sure how to answer that. my favorite snacks right now are fruits.

Jennifer, Mom to 3, Just keep trying.

Fran,

It sounds like you are doing much the same diet changes as I am and my weight loss has slowed right down, as well. A friend had a look at my diet and suggested I add calories to sort of 'shock' my system back into losing. I've increased the calories up to about 1500 but am getting those calories through protein/veg/fruit. The scale is starting to move again. Maybe that would help you, as well. I just keep reminding myself that I am playing the long game. :)

Just starting week three. Disappointed that my weight is at a standstill. The first week I did not have 100% no sugar but for the whole second week no sugar at all. I have even given up flour and keep my calories under 1200 a day. Grrrr

I'm glad to be starting week 3. I had to redo week two because of a little melt down I had. A lot of what we have to do for week 3 I've been doing for the last 3 weeks because I'm trying to lose weight. So I'm hoping week 3 will be easier then week 2 was for me.

I was doing great with my sweets until I joined friends for a wine and chocolate tasting on Friday. I was looking really good with my red sweater tucked in and confident I could handle a few bites of chocolate...wrong! The chocolates and wine were so nicely matched I had to eat every serving to get the "full" taste! Today I am paying for my adventure and will have a week of working even harder at the gym...yikes!

I'm on day 10 of the DASH for weight loss program, so still in the first 2 weeks of having minimal carbs. It's really helping me with cravings for breads, pastas, sweets, etc. And I'm down 9 pounds. Monday I'll reintroduce fruits and whole grains. This feels good.

New goal: No more than 20g of sugar/day. This number doesn't reflect fruits.

This morning for breakfast, we went out. I had French Toast with butter and powdered sugar, turkey sausage, and an over easy egg. I ate no syrup with the French Toast. I normally ask for extra butter and extra powder sugar. The serving size is 3 pieces (1-1/2 slices of Texas Toast). I didn't eat the extra butter they brought (the guy at the next table enjoyed it) and I didn't ask for extra powdered sugar. I only ate two pieces of the french toast (leaving one on my plate). I had hot tea and ice water with lemon to drink. I have managed to cut sweetener out of my tea. I think I am conquering my "sweet" cravings and after 66 years of eating sweets, that is no small feat. Tracking my food has helped me know that I can and am eating more healthy food. I still need to start eating lower sodium foods.

Today is the first day of the rest of my Life.

I've decided to replace chocolate with carob. It's been 9 days since I've had cookies (my downfall). I'm very happy about that!

So far, no sweets. My husband has also given up his ice cream that he used to have every night, so that helps. Had Italian last night and garlic always makes me want chocolate. Decided to brush my teeth and stay away from the kitchen. Must admit, I do miss chocolate! emoticon

My family and I have been loving the Steamables! I know it's lazy, but that's why junk food is so appealing sometimes. You just take the veggies out of the freezer, throw the bag in the microwave and in 5 minutes, you have perfectly steamed veggies. One of my sons eats a whole bag himself, but it's really increased our veggie intake. emoticon emoticon

Had a dish of ice cream last night just because someone else brought it into the house and offered it. It didn't blow up my day and I didn't go back for more....that has always been my downfall. The rest of the week has been on track. My veggies are diminishing in the fridge so I'll have to get out and shop for those good swaps. This is one of my tests in moderation.

What swaps are working for everyone here?

Abstaining is easier than moderation. Does anyone else wonder if this is the diet mentality, and it will lead to rebound after the challenge is over?

You will mess up at the beginning. You need to be mindful of what you need to eat and as the challenge continues you will get better at it.

Best wishes.
