I started a weight journal thread on the McDougall forums this week, and asked about the amount of beans. I was told by a long-timer that it's an average of one cup per day. So you could eat less one day and more the next, as long as it's not over the average. It's to make sure you get most of your meal percentage from starch and not too much protein.

When I was first McDougalling and eating about 1 1/2 cups of beans a day, I didn't lose any weight and just maintained that week. Once I cut my bean portion (that was the only thing I changed), I lost almost two pounds right away. So I will stick to the recommended portion!

Well, I couldn't find a maximum daily amount of beans given in The Starch Solution. There was a statement that the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine recommends two or more servings of legumes per day, but McDougall didn't directly say that himself.

Similarly, in McDougall's "Eat More Starch Challenge" on pages 24-25, he challenges those who are skeptical of the starch benefits to add one or a mixture of sources of starch a day to their regular diet. One of the options is 3 cups of beans. But that would be assuming you were going to eat your entire starch allowance in beans. Most of us eat other sources of starch in addition to beans.

I have been doing a lot of reading on the main McDougall forums as well as the McDougall WFPB and Starch Solution Facebook groups. I have seen it referenced several times that Dr. McDougall recommends a maximum of one cup of beans daily, so I am going to go with that guideline. I had already cut my portions down this week as I was trying to find the answer.

So I can't tell you where to find it quoted in a book or website, but I can tell you that numerous people who have been doing McDougall for longer than I have seem to know this rule.

Me too, I've been eating about a cup and a half. My copy of the Starch Solution arrived today, so I can try to find it in there. I will just slightly increase my grains and reduce the beans to one cup a day if that's what I find out. My husband will be happy if I eat less beans - it will make for a lighter grocery load to carry in the house! I have been buying eight cans a week!

Thanks for your help! I'll report back too if I find the answer.

I wouldn't stress about it. Dr. Mcdougall believes that research shows that high protein diets put more stress on kidneys. This is why he recommends not overdoing it with protein in general, beans in particular.

I'll have to look up the exact amount. I probably average a cup and a half a day of legumes....

Good question, I'll follow up with some research.

I just saw a reply to a post on the McDougall WFPB Facebook group that said that McDougall recommends a average max of one cup of beans per day. I could only find that written on one newsletter when I did a site search but had no other luck trying to confirm.

My copy of the Starch Solution hasn't arrived yet, so maybe it is in there...but can anyone confirm this for me? If a cup is the limit, I have been overdoing my daily portion for the last two weeks.

Thanks!
