UPDATE: On Jan 7 I had my right hip revised. Original THR (both hips) done 16 years ago. The procedure was pretty much the same, except less invasive. By that I mean the rod in my femur wasn't replaced, and the metal cup liner in the pelvis wasn't replaced. A new plastic liner and new femoral ball was attached to match the new liner. Dr. went in the same incision site so same 30 staples. I was pretty much back to normal (walking unassisted and little or no discomfort) in 4-5 weeks but needed to build up my stamina so by 8 weeks I'd say 95% back.
Overall the results have been good. I'll probably need a few more weeks to get to 100% but really happy with the results.

Good question. I had my 1st THR at 51. I have heard a revision is not as easy as the initial replacement.

I haven't even thought of that. I guess i think one day at a time.

I agree that being in the best shape you can be in will help prolong the need for the revision and make the recovery and "getting back to normal" that much quicker and painless.
The difficulty is not so much getting there, but staying there (in good shape). I don't need the revision yet, but after 14 years, I'm starting to think about it. I know that the getting in shape part doesn't come quickly, and if done properly (without injury and without trying to do more than my body can handle), can take a couple of years, at least in my case. Do you know of anyone who's had the revision surgery?

As many of us have had a THR (or two!), and they're performing the operations on younger patients (used to be you had to be close to 60 before you were a candidate), many of us will need a revision 15-20 or more years after the initial successful surgery. How do you plan to prepare yourself and keep recovery time to a minimum? We'll be older, but wiser the second time around, so I'd really like to hear your thoughts on this.
