DAY #42 FOOD AND FUN

Geez, it was rather depressing reading about Jerry! I would tell him to get some serious counseling.

I can't say I identify with using food as an escape, but I love to have fun and my social schedule always seems to revolve around food & drinks. Lately I have worked at living a slower/quieter pace and so this has not been such an issue, but there are "transition times" in my day/life that I am recognizing -

1. When we travel we always look for a unique place to eat for dinner & drinks. It adds some fun to an otherwise stressful and tedious day of driving.

2. In the afternoons, especially in summer weather, we transition into dinner with Happy Hour drinks.

To shake up my routine I could -

1. Go to less exciting restaurants and/or remember to follow my diet rules when ordering food.

2. Instead of alcohol I could use an afternoon coffee w/ creamer or flavored iced tea.

Day 42 - Food and Fun

It is considered to be part of hospitality to offer food and drink at gatherings and also to offer more than enough so that everyone can have as much as they want. How embarrassing is it as a hostess to run out of food before everyone has had a first chance to select what they want. And then what happens to the food left over when the event is over? I hate wasting food, I much prefer my social interactions to be activities like hiking, exercise class with friends, walks and talks with friends, rather than food centred events. Tonight I am going to a Green Party meeting, in our community it is a small group that meets at the local coordinator's home. She eats healthy and is very fit, I am looking forward to healthy snacks, but even healthy snacks are easy to over- indulge in. This evening will challenge my determination to eat nutritious food in appropriate portions, to enjoy but not abuse food.

• Identify places or times when food provides your main source of fun or entertainment.
• Make a list of creative, non-food ways to have fun. Do one of them today.
• For situations where food provides a transition, invent ways to shake up your routine and follow a healthier pattern.

• Identify places or times when food provides your main source of fun or entertainment.

- family holiday gatherings like Thanksgiving or Christmas
- family celebrations like birthdays, weddings, graduations, promotions
- banquets, awards banquets, for sports, academics, industry
- trying new foods and specialties in foreign countries

a solution to not eating too much at these events would be to drink 3-4 cups of water and after 15 minutes, eat some nutritious, bulky, low-calorie food like vegetables with some protein, do this a hour or so before the event
- along with this, at the event, spend time connecting with the people there and making that the main event and the food just some pleasant refreshment, and don't eat too much
- do practice "banquet in a bite" - enjoy the food and the hands that prepared it but in small quantities

• Make a list of creative, non-food ways to have fun. Do one of them today.

- activities like hiking,
- volunteer work projects
- regular work projects
- karaoke
- theme park or museum days
- shopping days

• For situations where food provides a transition, invent ways to shake up your routine and follow a healthier pattern.

- make the food transition something that is healthy and nutritious and takes the edge off of wanting to eat a lot and transitions into wanting to eat for health

Today (11/9/19) I am going to my friend's house to watch Football. They are likely to have food and drink available too, although the match will be the focus for the afternoon. Really looking forward to it and have been really sensibly eating today.

Transition times, sometimes I eat while preparing meals - try wearing gloves when I can to avoid doing this and put away (or don't buy) foods that will tempt me away especially at transition times. Remind myself that "I am stronger than this today"!

Day 42 - Food and fun

When your life is stressful or unhappy, food makes the world more bearable. Later, when the painful realities of your life return, you simply eat again. It seems quicker and easier than trying to invent new ways to entertain yourself or to cope with life challenges. You also may need to invent new ways to manage transitions in your day.

Today

• Identify places or times when food provides your main source of fun or entertainment.
-Family get togethers
-Eating out at restaurants
-Holiday traditions (Christmas cookies, Easter candy, Halloween candy)
-Evenings after dinner

• Make a list of creative, non-food ways to have fun. Do one of them today.
Get outside and enjoy the weather
Walk the dogs
Play computer games
Listen to my favorite music
Have a relaxing cup of tea
Dance

• For situations where food provides a transition, invent ways to shake up your routine and follow a healthier pattern.
-After dinner is over and the kitchen is cleaned, the kitchen is closed until breakfast but if there are leftovers from the meal, they tempt me. I need to think about cooking less so there are no leftovers. Or, freeze the leftovers as single serving food to make it less readily available to tempt me.

Some cute “fun food” ideas:

I found a surprising amount of happiness - fun even - today by taking time to give myself a pedicure, and to do my May budget, get the ironing done. I feel satisfied because I've completed some tasks - and after I got home from work early afternoon. Oh, and making a tasty meal for myself. I also had a gin and tonic!

I did better with my 'transition time' today, but making a cup of tea, filling a footbath with fragrant warm water, and listening to some interesting podcasts on my tablet.

I feel a lot less stressed because I worked through my list........ rather than letting things build up and procrastinating, or trying to do too much.

DAY #42 FOOD AND FUN - ROUND 2

Well, you do all know that my user name is FUNLOVEN! ! ! Yup. I love to have fun. I am ALWAYS thinking about the next thing we can do to have fun!

Linda lists a few reasons that people use food for fun -

Escape from an awful life like Kevin's
Boredom from the drudgery of daily routine
Stress or unhappiness due to life's challenges

I am sooooo thankful that I do not see myself in any of those situations!

However, food does constantly seem to be a part of the fun activities I do. For example, this Saturday we are hosting a Derby/Birthday Party. We have invited a group of close friends to our house to watch the Kentucky Derby on TV. Hats for the women and bow ties for the men are required. We will be serving Mint Julips and appetizers. We are setting up a fun game so everyone can bet on a horse. Afterwards, we will all head to a local restaurant for the Birthday part of the evening. There are two gals in my group of eight who have birthdays (4/28 and 5/3) and it seems to have become my responsibility to make sure we have a celebration.

I am not sure just how on earth I am supposed to avoid all the food involved in this event. I am planning on making the appetizers healthy and I think that is the best I can do along with just a bit of restraint on my part emoticon

I should probably mention that we use Happy Hour as a transition time in our lives to indicate the end of "chores". I have really been limiting my alcohol intake (empty calories) and so I am hoping this transition time will become easier for me.

Day 42 -- Food and Fun

• Identify places or times when food provides your main source of fun or entertainment.

When I'm alone in the evening and watching boring TV.
When I'm tired after work.
During the 8 hours at work.
Whenever I'm home alone.
Going out with my elderly aunt or my girlfriends.

• Make a list of creative, non-food ways to have fun. Do one of them today.

Include an evening walk when going out to dinner.
Choose a place with an outdoor patio or fireplace to add pleasure to the evening.
Have fun stories or jokes at the ready. Make conversation more important than food.
Go dancing or play darts after the meal. Go sight seeing.
At home, craft projects, puzzles, recipe search, read, dance, go through clothes and get rid of stuff, photo albums, vision collage, pamper myself with a bath, lotions, candles. Text friends. Facebook. Play games.

• For situations where food provides a transition, invent ways to shake up your routine and follow a healthier pattern.

After dinner when I have a habit of dessert or snacks. Switch to a refreshing tea. Brush my teeth. Plan tomorrow's meals. Go for a walk. Go outside and look at the stars.

At work when I switch from one school to the next and grab something fast to eat.
If I'm truly hungry, have a prepared healthy snack. If not, read something short but funny or interesting. Find video of ocean waves and relax to the sound. Do stretches.

Joy is a Choice. Choose joy moment by moment.

When all else fails, persistence prevails.

going "out to eat" for entertainment was something we did frequently, also many celebrations of birthdays and holidays are accompanied by good food, but the foods are not the main source of fun.
• Make a list of creative, non-food ways to have fun. Do one of them today.
play a game or watch a movie together
• For situations where food provides a transition, invent ways to shake up your routine and follow a healthier pattern.
we no longer buy stuff from concessions stands at the theater
we don't center the celebrations around the foods
we enjoy having dinner together, all of us, around our family dinner table and we also enjoy conversation at that time.

Day #42 Food and fun
Since being retired, food and fun have been separated on most days of my current life.
I have lots of projects that were on hold, half done or planned before retirement. Now I’ve only kept the fun projects and enjoy them often.

With yesterday’s lesson and today’s I can see that my real issue with food is my instant reaction to frustration and disappointment.
Today as I sort of feel “alone” instead of turning to food:
I’ll take a longer walk
I’ll check a new yoga video
I’ll read about what to do in Chicago which is where I’m going next

I would certainly say that food is a highlight in my life; I look forward to it. In that sense, I understand the example Linda gave about Jerry, saying "Most days, food is the only thing I have to look forward to."

I don't think my life really lacks fun - but I do seem to have lost, to a great extent, the knack of really experiencing it as fun.

I used to have a book about happiness by one of those famous writers on happiness, whose name completely eludes me right now - but it was how 'happy' is not a very realistic feeling to aim for - it's very transient. The better description of happiness as a state of being, is 'contentment'.

I have a book on my shelf called 'Deep Play' by Diane Ackerman, which is quite helpful. It really comes back to tapping into what we see, feel, hear, taste, smell - using all our senses to fully engage with an experience. It's a challenging book because it invites us to really take risks and feel deeply. My bookmark is still sitting half-way through this book, and the first half of the book is covered with my pencil underlinings and stars! I think today's lesson has got this book back off the shelf.

Another thing that is great fun for me is creative work. Yesterday at work I found a bundle of old birthday cards belonging to a man I support who is non-verbal, quadriplegic - it's hard to be entertaining company all day. I thought I'd cut out all the pictures of dogs (he likes dogs) and make a kind of mobile. I strung them together with thread from the sewing box and made a little hanging display of doggie pictures. It's not brilliant - but it's a curiosity, and it was fun to do.

Creative Sprint was a lovely project I was introduced to via another Sparker called SPARKINON where you get set a daily challenge to make something.

So, what today's lesson has mostly made me think about is how I can inject more fun, or more awareness of fun, into my daily life. It's too easy to get ground down by daily routines of work, shopping, eating, clearing up, exercising even!, sleeping.

My transition times are OK these days. I used to have a strong feeling of 'needing' to eat something after work - but now I just come home and flop with a cuppa usually. Or change straight into my workout gear - ready for action!

My easy go-to activities are reading - I always try to have a book close at hand! Or knitting.

Browsing the internet is also a source of inspiration for new ideas, activities and fun projects.

I do enjoy my cookery books, and creating nice things to eat. But they are more often healthy options these days. I no longer bake trays of cookies, or pies, or cakes (except at Xmas and even then it's a healthier option).

Making my meals interesting is still quite important to me, although I have read about making meals less interesting as a way to reduce their power..................... I like the contrasts of textures and colours particularly.

Day #42 Food & Fun

When your life is stressful or unhappy, food makes the world more bearable. Later, when the painful realities of your life return, you simply eat again. It seems quicker and easier than trying to invent new ways to entertain yourself or to cope with life challenges. You also may need to invent new ways to manage transitions in your day.

• Identify places or times when food provides your main source of fun or entertainment.

I thought this lesson was going to be about FOOD & FUN, but I'm not so sure Linda did a very good job of touching on that at all. I felt that it discussed Transition Times in our daily routines more. This left me feeling disappointed because I was really hoping for some ideas.

My life is very social and FULL OF FUN! Fun that seems to always revolve around food! I have been trying to incorporate some activity into my social events and make food the "accessory" instead of the main event. For example, last Friday we had friends to our home and we walked the 7 blocks to and from the restaurant we ate at. This activity diversion was helpful, but it is not always possible. It seems that many people in my social circle don't want to do anything except sit around! Geeez!

• Make a list of creative, non-food ways to have fun. Do one of them today.

1. Movie Night
2. Concert
3. Nature Walk
4. Attend a Festival
5. Visit Somewhere You Have Never Been

I could probably come up with more ideas just for myself, but my dilemma is when I am with others. Today, after church, I am getting together with my Yoga Instructor for a walk. This is a new situation for me because it is a connection with her outside of yoga. Afterwards, I am attending her Rejuvenation Yoga class (I have mentioned this class several times before) and a good friend is able to attend with me today. I am hoping that after class we will be able to go to a coffee shop to chat for a bit.

• For situations where food provides a transition, invent ways to shake up your routine and follow a healthier pattern.

I needed to use this idea years ago when I quit smoking. Today in my life the biggest Transition seems to be Happy Hour; a time of day when tasks are done and relaxation begins. This is more of an issue during the summer months when DH and I enjoy sitting outside on our patio or front porch. I'm working on decreasing my alcohol intake during these times since they are such empty calories.
