When I am asked to rank what is important to me, I feel a bit pressured as I do want to rank them in order of importance and then spend way too much time obsessing over the order of the ranking, so this time, I am going to list 10 important things but not necessarily in order of importance. my husband, my kids, the rest of my family, my health, my fitness, volunteering, preparing healthy meals for my family, spending time outdoors, travelling, learning something new and interesting

Food is in there for preparing healthy meals. But food itself as a obsession as in, what am I going to eat next, when am I going to eat next, what am I craving, what should I be avoiding - trying not to make that an ongoing thought the whole day. Pre-planning the day before, spending 20 minutes pre-planning, and then sticking to the plan helps with not having food a constant thought throughout the day. This works well most of the time. If I have an emotional upset and am seeking some self-soothing, not thinking about food is more of a battle.

I've recently come across something a little different, but which has a similar effect. It was a talk by Maria Sirois about how to stay happy in dark times.

youtu.be/AnDVwGxMTto

She offered three practices which I've found really helpful.

Morning: ask yourself three questions

1. what can I do to nourish myself today?
2. what can I do to strengthen myself today?
3. what can I do to inspire myself today?

I've found these really effective ways to plan my day - and to appreciate what I do and how it supports me (in non-food ways) - I've felt much more cheerful!

Today my answers are:

1. Nourishing is carrying out a new work activity that I've come up with - this excites me; and sewing my face coverings - I love the creative process of sewing.

2. Strengthening is doing my hula hoop exercises and waist-whittling exercises.

3. Inspiring is listening to a talk on ZOOM this evening from the Windrush Foundation, and reading.

This is helpful because every day is different. There isn't usually one thing that is most important every day. These are also SMART - they're specific and achievable things that I can do today.

Day 46 - If not food, then what?

What do we turn to to soothe our discontent?

I find that if I do something useful, I feel better, and I am absorbed in what I am doing and don't turn to food. I have made a list of things to do when the food siren is calling me to eat for feeling better and not for fuel and nutrition.

This lesson is such a positive thing to do and has helped me evaluate and re-evaluate what's really important in my life several times. An activity I try to remember now is to wake up with a prayer of gratitude for family, friends, health and all my blessings each day.

Other activities I do to reduce focusing on food are:

Gardening, yoga, walk and pray with a friend, Zoom with friends, patio time to admire nature or to read, do crossword, sudoku. I organize or clean at least 10 minutes most days with my "what's bugging me the most" streak. Lately it's been my clothes closet. Spend time on SP. I also watch TV but I think this does more harm than good. :D

List of Important things
1 Seeking God's will in my life
2 Family
3 Health
4 Paperwork - business bookwork - estate planning- accounting and tax prep
5 House work and maintenance
6 Fitness goals
7 Volunteering
8 Garden
9 Travelling
10 Outdoors sports - hiking, walking, running, swimming, paddle boarding, cycling...
11 Food - menu planning, what am I going to eat today, what do I need to shop for

for one entire day, you simply deepen your commitment to this area, expressing this through your words and behavior. By the end of the day, you’ll find you feel a lot more passionate and committed to that person or issue.

I am thinking -everything I have listed is pretty important - maybe I will spend a day on each of them. I don't know how long this will take, for sure I can't do it for the next 10 days consecutively, but it would be interesting to do, perhaps I will set a goal to do this by the end of October

I will be back at the end of October
I know that when I am engaged in doing something, working, planning, exercising, I am not hungry or thinking about food at all. I do think about food when I do paperwork, watch tv, or read, when I do something less physically active.

I enjoy walking too Gill, I think it is under rated as a fitness and health support.
One year I had an abdominal surgery and couldn't do strength training, hiking, running, anything strenuous for 6 weeks. I walked and at first I thought, better than nothing but not really exercise, haha, I changed my opinion completely by the end of that 6 weeks.

Making a list is really hard - there are so many things that are important really - this is a pretty arbitrary list - but it serves the purpose for today's activity. And there's food, right at the bottom.

My new #1 came to me very quickly, so is probably really is the most important one. I have recently been learning more about the huge benefits of walking - physically and mentally/emotionally. I pray I can keep walking to the end of my life; I cannot imagine what it must be like not to be able to just lace up my trainers and walk out of the door for a walk.

1. Walking
2. Good health
3. Sleep
4. Friends
5. Running
6. Reading
7. My Buddhist practice
8. Financial stability
9. Being organised
10. Fresh air
11. Food

Let's see: Family; faith; home; work; health; money . . . the list goes on.

I need to continue working on my 10 minute Streaks. It's helping.

However, what I also need to do is focus more on 'fun' things, reading, art, etc. I recently bought some water color pens. I'm just getting used to them. Fun stuff.

Day 46 If not food, then what

My list (not in order of importance):
Food
Family
Friends
Fun
Fitness
The most important that I plan to work on with consistency at the moment is Fitness.
I have chosen it as my main focus for the next few months and hope to make it a habit like other healthy things have become.

Day 46 -

I'm going to digress a little. I read Linda's answers and am reminded that I haven't played the piano this year, at all. My husband gave me a book for Christmas that I flipped thru but have not played. I'm going to try to play piano some this week. It is a great stress reliever and a good time to just do something different. Even a few minutes here and there is better than nothing.

Alicia363 has as one of her 2018 goals the following: “Imbue all actions with love.” In her blogs, she gives everyday examples of the effect of applying this, from shopping to making copies at work. It is brilliant and I have learned so much just from reading her blogs and trying to emulate her goal in my own life. It helps. This is what I think of with this lesson. When I try this, I am more compassionate with myself and more kind to others. This is how I show passion in my pursuits and relationships.

I spent most of 2017 following an elimination protocol. In the beginning I felt ... lost. Like I couldn't figure out what to do with my self since I wasn't eating all dang day, thinking about food, sneaking food, buying food, blah, blah, blah.

After this recent "fall from grace" I have dusted off my quilting projects and filled my soul with creating. Though I am searching for a 14" hoop to go on the Grace Company quilting hoop stand my BFF gave me ... I am quilting a little each day on a quilt for my DD.

Ahhh ... I forgot what truly "feeds" the soul.

This day hits home with me in a big way...both from reading Gill's sparkmail, and then the blog by Linda.

I just deleted the long paragraphs I spent so much time composing about how weighted down I feel by my circumstances and the responsibility that has been laid on my shoulders for several years now. The fact is that I have allowed circumstances to make me feel guilty about "frivolously" getting up in the morning and working on some of the arts and crafts I love to do.

Also -- I really loved the Peanuts cartoon Gill posted on a previous thread..about the right time.

There are a couple things I want to do just for the fun of creating and not feeling guilty for doing them rather than other more important things. This lesson has made me aware of beginning on them --and not feeling guilty about it!

I'm going to try the idea of choosing one thing I enjoy (or used to enjoy) and trying to focus on it for a day. I used to quilt a lot. I learned when my children were small and I was at home then set quilting aside in my 40s when I went back to school and then work. I've always said that I would get back to it but.....it just hasn't happened.

Why? I used to love all aspects of quilting...planning, choosing fabrics, piecing, quilting and then completing the projects. I lost skill over the years and now I'm not sure I'm up to it....I guess I'm intimidated by the quilter I USED to be but....I have marked a day on my calendar and I am going to take a day to focus on quilting.

I am also going to try to get more exercise than I have been getting.

So....If not food, then what?.........Quilting and Exercise for now.....maybe even some new activities later.

Has anyone else left behind an activity they enjoyed for years??

If not food...........sometimes I think the more time we have the less we get done. We are moving and downsizing............lots of decision to make, keeping things, storing things, getting rid of things etc. we have only so much time to get this done so I can keep myself busy all day. However, if this wasn’t happening, I would think that I could never do this. We are capable of doing so much more than we do, but talk ourselves out of it. My hope is that I will not waste precious time and enjoy life everyday!

One day at a time!

C - I'm wondering what "anxiety" book you are reading. I have recognized recently that there are situations that cause me anxiety and I have been working on learning how to deal with these feelings. Life is all a mental game IMHO!

1. Spark People/100 DWL/Food/WW
2. God/Daily Devotions/Bible Study groups
3. Family Needs
4. Friend Connections
5. Fitness
6. House Cleaning
7. Garden Club
8. Reading

If I can find time for all of this, there is no time left for anything else which would include my hobbies of scrapbooking and knitting. I have talked to myself for weeks now about fitting a day of scrapbooking into my schedule. I used to do this frequently, but other priorities have moved this luxury off the list completely! Also, I have wanted to paint our family room for months now. I have the color picked out and the type of paint, but can't seem to get to the store to pick the darn paint up!

I have gotten very slack about my schedule. There was an article on SP today which addressed 7 ways to increase your mental strength and one of those had to do with honoring your calendar. I am going to get back to this habit. Like COZI recommends - it is all about setting that timer for a few minutes each day and then just doing it!

Day 46 If not food, then what?

When you lower the priority of food, you force yourself to put something else in its place as the dominant interest in your day. As you focus on the non-food items on your list, look for ways you can give them more emphasis or attention.

Spend time thinking, doing, or in some other way, focusing on that item, person, or activity. Assign it a very high priority, making it far more important than food. Write down your plans for this. At the end of the day, write a few notes about how you now feel about that item or person. Over time, do this with the rest of your list.

As you focus on the non-food items on your list, look for ways you can give them more emphasis or attention. For example, you might spend time playing with children or plan a movie night or watch a favorite tv show with your spouse or a good friend. By increasing your commitment to these important things, you'll find you can replace food in your life more easily.

When you lower the priority of food, you force yourself to put something else in its place as the dominant interest in your day.

Really, food is not on the list. I need it for fuel, but I don't really think I ever focused my life around food. I didn't much pay attention to it...and that was the problem. I was not paying attention to it. It was mindless. Whatever was there was there and how much I ate? No thought. It has to have a place of importance where I will focus on it properly. That I will be careful what I choose to put in my body.

Day #46 If Not Food, Then What?
Although the things more important in life than food change their spot based on what is going on at the moment, the basic list seems to remain the same.

Day 46 - If not food, then what?

I copied and saved Gill's thoughts on peace and the Brave Girls list. I know I will be reading them over and over again. Truly so much food for thought in this year of upheaval and polarization.

Food seems always to be at the top of my list. Removing it is a little scary - what if I don't have anything to replace it? What if there are so many concerns that I can't decide?

Well...my thought is that my physical health and strength has to go first because I can't do much without it.
After that in no particular order but just as they come to mind,
my family
gratitude
optimism
friends
being an example of love and forgiveness
taking time to read and learn
being centered
being fiscally responsible
being organized enough to manage the details of life

No exercise today - bronchitis is calling the shots and I'm not breathing well enough - Just meditation instead

Gill, thank you for posting the message from the Brave Girls Club. Wonderful and food for thought!

My list is not in priority order. Family interaction would top it and fixing my health issues is paramount to fulfilling that brief. My recent pelvic MRI has thrown up more issues than the hip damage it was aimed at, so I am in an uncertain place with more investigative tests to come.

1: Remaining positive in spirit
2: Being proactive in health care
3: Making nutrition count
4: Strengthening joints and flexibility
5: Maximising family interaction
6: Hopefully being able to continue my work
7: Better management of emotional eating
8: Remaining calm and having courage
9: Sharing ideas and supporting others

Day 46: If not food, then what?

Hubby's stroke in 2006, retirement in 2012, and now move "back home" all changed my life goals drastically. Currently these are the things important to me:

1: Balancing my needs and my handicapped husband's medical needs.
2. Managing our finances, purchasing a replacement handicap van.
3. Reconnecting with "old" friends and continuing sparkpeople friendships.
4. Interacting with our new-found friends here in the apartment complex: participating in the social activities here, Buffalo area sight-seeing , walks in local parks, discussions, lectures, music performances, etc.
5: Practicing strategies to control my excess eating and focusing on daily good nutrition.
6: Getting in as much exercise as I can manage. Current priority is leg muscles and balance.
7: Daughter's welfare.
8: Family interaction both my own and hubby's.
9: Organizing our stuff, including continued downsizing.
10: My appearance
11. Excess food.

If not food, than what? I can't tell you how often I ask myself this question and come up empty; especially when I am struggling with focusing on my goals.

My goal for 2017 was/is to find balance and inner peace so I especially like the message you included in your post, Gil. Whatever brings me peace today is what I am going to pursue.

Thanks for letting me stop by and put in my two cents emoticon

World Peace includes keeping my own spirits strong, choosing to read positive news stories (not doom and gloom), choosing not to get into disputes or arguments with other people, being genuinely interested in other people and exploring my prejudices, taking part in spiritual/religious activities that support me, contributing positively to my community including volunteering, choosing not to complain, focusing on the beautiful, wonderful, amazing world we live in, being a peace-builder by having dialogue with people, being a peace-maker by helping others overcome their differences = being Sparky!

Wow! I just went over to check my emails and had this in the daily email from Brave Girls Club!!!!

"Your daily truth from the Brave Girls Club...
Dear Seeking Soul,

Peace is good. Peace is so so good. It is worth it to travel whatever lengths you need to go to feel peace. Often peace is right in front of us if we will just silence everything else out.

But sometimes we have to make really tough choices or go to great lengths to feel at peace. Sometimes we are at war with our own selves, sometimes with an issue, an addiction or an illness.

Making peace with that part of ourselves is a huge step toward peace. Sometimes we just have to COME to peace with it. Some things are a lifetime struggle, a part of us that we just have to come to peace with.

Whatever it takes, it is worth it. Always go where the peace is, especially the peace in your heart.

When making tough decisions, you will never regret making the decision that brings the most peace to your heart.

Always go where the peace is.

You are loved.
xoxo"

I surprised myself on this lesson; after placing 'rest' at the top of my list, I found myself deciding to take my sun-lounger down into the garden and spent a good 2 hours out there, reading, relaxing, soaking up the sun, and had a really good rest! I also went to bed early and watched a DVD. I carried the theme over into the next day, and again today, I'm being mindful of getting enough rest (back to work tomorrow!).

Day 46 - If not food....

I have been quite good at replacing my old grazing habits with walks with a friend or alone, posting on Spark while listening to music, calling a friend, beginning a task, like needlework, that requires clean hands (so no food or drink around), etc. There are so many other things to do. Food used to be an all-day pastime for me.....NO MORE!

When I think I need food for comfort the same activities put me in a better frame of mind and ground my thinking as I work back to the reasons I am on this journey.

Happy Easter!

Day #46 If Not Food, Then What?

There are always other parts of life that are as important as good food for our health and happiness.

Being healthy, being with family and friends and enjoying life are important to me.
Staying off medications is important to me.

Day 46: If not food, then what?
Once you decide to label a lot more of your food as being unimportant, you may have to replace it with something else. Take out a piece of paper and write the numbers from 1 to 10 down the side of the page. Then write the word "food" in the first slot-number one on your list of important things.
Now come up with nine more items including people, things, or events in life that are very important to you. You might add your kids, your job, or your health to the list.
Perhaps you'll include playing a favorite sport, going to the movies, or spending time with a good friend. Be as specific as possible with these items, even listing all the names of your children or your friends.
Make other things more important
Once you have a total of ten items, erase or scratch the word "food" off the number one spot. Then move it to the bottom of the list and label it as number 1 1. Next study your list and think about what else is really important in your life.
In the empty slot next to number one, write a new item. You can choose a person or activity already on your list or add something new that you hadn't considered before.
Now review your list again and think about how you could give more attention to all of the non-food items that you labeled as important. Notice how when you lower the priority of food, you force yourself to put something else in its place as the dominant interest in your day.
Deepen commitment
As you focus on the non-food items on your list, look for ways you can give them more emphasis or attention. For example, you might spend time on the floor playing with your children. Or maybe you can plan a movie night or watch a favorite TV show with your spouse or a good friend. By increasing your commitment to these important things, you'll find you can replace food in your life a lot more easily.
From the list you made earlier, write your new number one item on a piece of paper or sticky note.
Deepen your commitment to this item. Spend time thinking, doing, or in some other way, focusing on that item, person, or activity. Assign it a very high priority, making it far more important than food.
At the end of the day, write a few notes about how you now feel about that item or person. Over time, do this with the rest of your list.
Here is my list.
1. Me ( I am working on me)
2. sons
3. Mom
4. Sisters

There are some great lists here and I see a lot of common bonds among this group!

First time through was in 2014, my husband was still alive:

1. Hobbies including logic problems, reading and crocheting
2.Christian
3.Loving and caring wife
4.Caregiver
5.Friend
6.My home is neat and clean
7.Gardening (flowers)
8.Exercise
9. Community Involvement
10. Making memes and demotivationals
11. Food

Today

1. Loving and caring person
2. Enjoying life with Tom
3. Health
4. Mobility
5. Pets
6 Financial independence
7. Home is clean and organized
8. Hobbies: sewing, crafting, crocheting
9. FUN pursuits: karaoke, improv, comedy clubs
10.Feel better at 60 than I do at 59

Food is part of the background, not the foreground of my life. I enjoy food for flavor and texture, but find much more enjoying in living my life.

How fitting that today's lesson falls on a day centered around food. This was a great time to give a reflective pause on today's lesson.

Onward & Downward!

Make a list of 10 important items (do not include food).

1) getting out of debt long term (my goal is age 65 and I have been working on this for a few years)
2) cleaning up my credit and improving my overall credit score (also been working on this for the past couple of years)
3) getting my 'numbers' down in the 'normal range' on my blood work (again like others I do not want to be on any medication if I can 'fix' the source of the problem through diet, exercise and weight loss)
4) lose 100 lbs.+ in the next year (November 1st, 2017 is my goal date)
5) getting both of my knees surgically replaced
6) getting back into a more physically active life (after #5 is taken care of)
7) pursuing some of my long held 'dreams': learning a new instrument like the oboe and French horn, joining a Baroque music chorale ensemble, returning to my art major 'non hobbies': painting and ceramics, read more interesting books, writing mystery novels (in honor of my Mom who loved a good mystery!), improve swimming skills.
8) travel (long goal---need new knees for this!); both here in U.S. but also abroad.
9) get some cosmetic surgery done: boob job. (LOL) I am so tired of being larger breasted
10) 'maybe' try or do something that I would have been too afraid to try in the past but would be willing to do so now or in the near future.

Now, as you can see where on earth would food fit in that kind of list??

Again, the more I focus on what else I want to fix in my life the less importance excess food has in it. Food as fuel is and always will be important but not as a 'fix' for any kind of emotional issues.

Here is my list.

1. Me ( I am working on me)
2. sons
3. Mom
4. Sisters
5. TOPS friends
6. TOPS AC
7. Work-financial need
8. Home improvements and getting organized

10 spending time with friends and family

Now for a new list.

I like the idea of picking something each day to deepen my commitment to, to mindfully keep it in the front of my thoughts and deepen my interest in it. I did the exercise as she outlined it, moved food to #11, but haven't moved anything up yet to my now-vacant #1. Now it's the end of the day and I'm supposed to put my thoughts down... OK, yes, I'm making a little fun of myself, my day has been pretty busy, but I do like the idea and will try to use it. It seems she's trying to give us skills to use to focus on enhancing our lives. Rawcookie, I think you have this down with your monthly focus on different things! I'm impressed!

Great posts, great insights here! I've just 'done' the list - I could do it ten times and get ten different lists, but here's the list I've got right now:

1. Mindfulness
2. health
3. money
4. running
5. family
6. friends
7. house
8. garden
9. work
10. Food

This time around I was inspired by the section about choosing an area of life in which I'd like to feel more passion! There are so many other things that could be on this list! But I get it, I totally get it. Food is a basic need on Maslow's hierarchy of needs model - Mindfulness is about self-actualization - right at the very top of the hierarchy of needs!

This is also probably the same as the 'Me' and religious/spiritual life that other people have mentioned.

Day 46: if not food, what?

How about life? For starters. I made a list in my own 'magic notebook' and it is not much different than what everyone else here has listed. I can honestly say that food is not and hasn't been high on my list for quite some time. Having said that once I make my grocery list buy it and then put it away then it is really about 'I have that job done, now what is calling my attention?" I see it more as a task than anything. Since I eat the majority of my meals alone I do not take the time and effort to make something hot. I eat a lot of cold meals. I call them my grab n go meals because they are easy to get out of the cupboards and/or refrigerator and 'assemble' on my one plate. The kinds of foods that I eat are whole raw nuts, fresh fruit, a carton of yogurt, etc.

I split my time and interests up depending on what day of the week it is and what is going on. My husband works very long hours plus he has a lot of community activities in the evenings. I watch 2-4 hours of t.v. most nights, including the news. I am in the middle of spring cleaning right now with the 'final goal' of repainting and redecorating a couple of rooms. I try to get my exercising in although I have had some set backs due to some health issues. I can do a lot from the computer: shop (including groceries), pay bills and of course here on SP. As a recent retiree (2 years this fall) I am enjoying the big block of times that I have. That has not gotten old to me yet. I have lots of time for "Me Time" and I take it as I can get it.

I do not see food as a separate entity so it was not #1 on my list nor anywhere else on any kind of list that I might have had. I am grateful for that. However, losing the extra weight and improving my health. That is #1 and it will be until the job is done.

Day 46 - If not food, then what?

I guess my approach/take on all this is a bit different. I am being mindful of more than just my food and process of eating/savoring/etc. I am being mindful of my day moment to moment (trying to be that is) ... so what is important is this moment.

I'm trying to have full attention on whatever task/circumstance is at hand ... so my #1 changes constantly. So, for instance, I'm responding to this forum right now but trying to be focused and NOT thinking about what I will do next or what will happen tomorrow, etc. etc. Ever read a book and realize paragraphs or pages later you are not really paying attention? Ever watch a show and realize you are 'somewhere else' in your mind? Ever eat a whole meal and not realize you have finished the plate/eaten it all? We all do this ... I am working on un-doing this and being fully in my life ... conscious what I'm doing as I do it.

If I were to make a list I guess it would go something like this:

1 - Me (if I don't take care of myself first how good can I be for anyone else?)
2 - Relationships - husband, pets, family, friends, community
3 - Knowledge - I believe in learning something new - hopefully every day
4 - Being outdoors - taking time each day to be outside/breathe fresh air/enjoy nature
5 - Activities - knitting, reading, crafting, participation in community events/projects
6- Down Time - taking time to just relax/do nothing/breathe

Hmmmm... can't really come up with 10 ... food is no where on the list because that just falls under "Me" - taking care of me - food/exercise/and a bit of pampering to go with it.

But most importantly - and not numbered at all because it falls 'within' each of the above numbered items - is my spiritual belief/focus ... it is the base of everything, me, you, the world ... and I try to recognize that every moment.

Day 46, 100 days If not food, then what?

Make a list of 10 things that are important, with food as #1, then remove food to #11 and put a new #1 in it's place.

Contemplate on this #1 and think of ways to apply your energy and passion to it throughout the day.

Food has't been my number 1 but the reasons I eat have been more emotional than eating to live.

Here is my list.

1. Me ( I am working on me)
2. sons
3. Mom
4. Sisters
5. TOPS friends
6. TOPS AC
7. Work-financial need
8. Home improvements and getting organized
9. Making new friends
10 spending time with friends and family

Weight loss and fitness should be on there but that is part of the me . I know I have to work on me for most of t he others to fall in place. It is good to have a list so we can focus on what needs t o be accomplished. like a grocery list. if we don't have one we buy all kinds of things we may not even want or need. and we can concentrate on the first two and things as I think Me should not ever be demoted or erased from the list. The only thing that is important about food is making sure my exchanges are account for each day.

My list of what is important to me is exactly the same as last time around!
emoticon Day #46 If Not Food, Then What?
For the most part food has never been #1 on my list of importance except that I prepare most of our meals so it does occupy a lot of my time.
Being healthy, being with family and friends and enjoying life are important to me. Staying off medications is important to me.
Reading, knitting, quilting and painting have always been important hobbies of mine. Helping others and keeping our home clean is important.

Last time I did this lesson I did not put me on the list at all and then plugged me in as #10. This time around I have learned I need to be higher up the list.

Day 45.... If not food, then what?

Making this list, I realize that my priorities change depending on what is happening in my life. I would say my husband/marriage is at the top, but since hubby is out of town for work for two months, I am making my job a priority. Since I spend nine hours a day at work, I have decided to make it a better experience.

My family, my health, and my finances are also at the top of my list on occasion.

Day 46- If not food, then what?

This was helpful to look at the importance and place that food has in my life. I think instead of saying "food" I should say "eating". I spend about 3-5 hours a day preparing food so it does take a large portion of the time I have. We hardly use any processed foods and my daughter has Celiac's disease so I find myself having to cook foods for her as well as the rest of the family. We are not a sandwich or cereal family due to the Celiacs. That means we have a hot meal every meal. I also sell gluten free foods, on the side, to friends and friends of friends.

I guess I spend so much time in the kitchen because cooking healthy is important for me and for those around me. I guess the difference comes in how much mental and emotional energy I'm spending focusing on losing weight, and eating. In the past I've given up on "dieting" after about 1 month because I just didn't have the mental and emotional energy to stay so focused. This time around, I'm not viewing it as a "diet". This is something I choose and need to do because if I don't, I'm not going to have very good quality of life and my life may end early, leaving my children and future grandchildren without a mom or grandmother. My life is never stress free and it seems I'm always in the middle of some major life event so I choose now to make good choices.

I guess my answer is kind of summing up the last several days of lessons. I was down with a nasty cold (second time in 2 weeks I was sick) and didn't log on to SparkPeople. Thanks to all who left me messages on my Spark page. I'm pretty bad at keeping in touch with others. I guess that's something that needs to be raised up on my list.

Peg, You know that I am so sorry to see you go. We partnered well through the book our first time and it was great! I learned a lot and I know that you did also. I hope we will see you back at some better time for you. How well I remember having a house full of teenagers!

Our season is changing to fall; it is a good 1/2 way time to recommit to our year's goals and this lesson is a good reason for introspection. Also nice that my fall recommitment comes so near our 1/2 way point through the 100 days!

Ten things that are really important to me; but not necessarily in the order listed.

1. an opportunity to grow
2. learning every day and maintaining my curiosity with the energy to follow where it leads
3. my spiritual relationship with my lord
4. my personal relationships with friends and family
5. the opportunity to be real with others
6 physically moving, i.e. some kind of exercise every day
7. my health
8. reading both for pleasure and to learn and grow
9 caring for my home and creating a pleasant environment for anyone who enters it.
10. good meals, made with real food
11. one more, Sparkpeople...because it has made a real difference in my health and because I love my fellow Sparkers!

I am blessed that every one of the above items is available to me!

I am very sad to say that I am going to have to drop out of this forum. I don't want to get into details but let's just say I am saddened by the selfish actions of my family and I'm not able to put the time in on this book that I need to or would like to.

I was able to run through the 100 Days book once before and maybe I'll be able to get back to when/if you run it again in the future.

I will try to stay on Spark People and will try to read the Days as they are posted when I can.

Just sign me Very Sad in Florida......... emoticon

Day 46 - If not food - then what?

Note: If you find your way to the beginning of this thread, which was started in 2011, you'll find inspiration from posts made about this activity.

Here are today's suggested activities:

1. From the list you made earlier, write your new number 1 item on a piece of paper or sticky note.

2. Deepen your commitment to this item. Spend time thinking, doing, or in some other way, focusing on this item, person, or activity. Assign it a very high priority, making it far more important than food.

3. At the end of the day, write a few notes about how you now feel about this item or person. Over time, do this with the rest of your list.

Here's a link to the Day 46 blog, posted on Linda's Spark page

here's a thought for you - without food, you die ..................
the only reason it's not coming up at No 1 for everyone is that we have too much of it!
in fact, for most of us on here, it's not something we ever have to fear not having enough of!
but, I know that if I run out of money before the end of the month, what I'm going to eat is actually uppermost on my list.

However - just wanted to throw that one in - don't mind me! Obviously, what the lesson is supposed to show us is that there's much, much more to life than food - and taking it out of prime position (if that's where it is) will being us more freedom and happiness. Right? I could do this list over and over - and I'm curious to find out more about the book mentioned 'Passion' by Barbara DeAngelis. I've just ordered a book in a similar genre - The Flourish Handbook by Cheryl Rickman.

1. Exercise
2. my family
3. Personal grooming
4. Spark people to track exercise and calories
5. 100 Days with Linda Spangle
6. My sweet dog

I have to say, food would not have been first on my list any way, at this point. Doing this group has made me feel so differently about food.

Before finishing my list ... I realized I was not on it ... again!!! That's why I became 125 pounds over weight in the first place!!! Lesson Learned!!!!!!

1. Hobbies including logic problems, reading and crocheting
2.Christian
3.Loving and caring wife
4.Caregiver
5.Friend
6.My home is neat and clean
7.Gardening (flowers)
8.Exercise
9. Community Involvement
10. Making memes and demotivationals
11. Food

I don't know that food "WAS" my #1, but put it there first for the purpose of this exercise. Food is food, my body needs to sustain itself, but it doesn't hold the power over me it once had. It also seems odd to place hobbies above some of the other items on the list, yet the purpose of this exercise is to focus on all 10 items at various times, sort of making them all my #1 and not focusing on #11 (food) at all.

I haven't done logic problems in a few years and they are an excellent way to keep my mind sharp, nor have I crocheted in a few years, and I have a brand new sofa that sure would look good to have a nice hand made afghan for it instead of the brown plain acrylic throw that we had been using with the old one. I will need to decide on colors before buying the yarn, and I might have donated my crochet supplies to Purple Heart, so I'd need to check and see if I even still have a crochet hook !

Maybe I will tackle a more difficult pattern than the traditional granny squares, and will look online for some patterns.

Interesting looking book Margo... I know I achieve that when I'm deeply engaged in my work... and watching the clock move inexorably slow when I am waiting for vacation to arrive or time to go home!!! LOL :)

Katie, how true... want people to come to a meeting, include food!

Glenna, I hear you, I love, adore, prefer, enjoy and am all about foods, all kinds, how do you make it, let's eat it!!! and sometimes, how do I get stopped???

I think for me, all of this is heading to finding a good balance... where I honestly enjoy the food I am eating (just not too much) and make the time to have good4me foods available (shop & cook) and be able to set it aside and take care of life, business, time with family and friends... in other words, the other things that are important to me.

As I looked at my list, at first, really a lot of "play" fun things were landing on it... but I was thinking...

connecting with family and friends... spend time with them (food or not) to touch base & know how they are doing

work; that's so I have a place to live & sleep, food to eat, car to get around, etc... dang $$ makes my world go round.... LOL ;)

i am beginning to value being able to move without cane or wheelchair and exercise and a bit of weight loss has done that for me, so I guess I would put swimming on the list :)

gosh, my furbabies bring hours of joy & comfort.....

I will continue to ponder this... how do things all mesh in my life in ways that work well :)

Great idea, making the list of 10 with food at top and then as number 11. I think it does take other passions to replace food; I know if I'm in the "Flow" www.amazon.com/Flow-Psychology-Exper

the here-and-now of food and eating is one of the things furthest from my mind. But if I'm planning my literal day, working here at SparkPeople, etc. then it's hard to escape.

I have to go to the grocery store today so have to notice the state of my food, my cats' food emoticon do a preliminary of planning meals, etc. Too, because I'm out of fruits and veggies, I'm dreaming of how good a banana will taste, I normally have one a day and haven't had one for a couple days. So, in a sense, food interrupts my daily routines.

it absolutely is a matter of putting food where it belongs...as nurishment
riding my bike or walking is the best sub for food when it is just a comfort item.
we celebrate with food, comfort with food, encourage with food
& as a nurse I know if you want someone to attend the meeting...serve food!
with that emphasis on food,,,food ,,food...is it any wonder that it becomes the main focus ??

This has been an ongoing question for me for the longest time: If not food, then what? I have asked and asked myself, what can you do besides eat that gives you as much pleasure as food. What could you do that would interest you and keep me so occupied that I wouldn't think of food?

Perhaps food is just the easiest option. Very easy to get. Many varities. Just grab and go.

Anyway I have not yet come up with the answer to this question. I will make the list and look at it. perhaps this is the nudge that I needed.

Day 46, 100 days If not food, then what?

emoticon What's Important List (10 items)
Put food as number 1, and then list 9 other things that are important to you, including people, things or events in life that are very important to you.

If you decide to label food as being unimportant, you may need to replace it with something else. So try scratching out food and putting it as number 11 on your list, then add a new item in the empty first slot.

Study your list and think about how you could give more attention to all of the non-food items you labeled as important. Notice that when you lower the priority of food, you force yourself to put something else in its place as the dominant interest in your day.

emoticon Deepen Commitment
In her delightful book Passion, author Barbara DeAngelis recommends selecting 1 area of life in which you'd like to feel more passion -- perhaps your marriage, your job, or your emotional or spiritual growth.

She suggests that for 1 entire day, you simply deepen your commitment to this area, expressing this through your words and behavior. By the end of the day, you'll find you feel more passionate and committed to that person or issue.

As you focus on the non-food items on your list, look for ways you can give them more emphasis or attention. For example, you might spend time playing with children or plan a movie night or watch a favorite tv show with your spouse or a good friend. By increasing your commitment to these important things, you'll find you can replace food in your life more easily.

emoticon Suggested activities for today
~ from the list you made, write your new number 1 on another piece of paper or sticky note

~ deepen your committment to this item. Spend time thinking, doing, or in some other way, focusing on this item, person, or activity. Assign it a very high priority, making it far more important than food.

~ at the end of the day, write a few notes about how you now feel about this item or person. Over time, do this with the rest of your list
