~ Evaluate how your program is going so far. Is this a right time for you to work on losing weight?
I've been consistent with my program although my weight is up and down.

~ If not, make a list of reasons why it doesn't seem to be the right time. Measure your list against the criteria of major life events or any big issues that demand your time and energy.
I think this is the perfect time.

~ If losing weight is truly important to you, make it the right time. In your notebook, write a few ideas on how to get around the roadblocks in your daily life and make your diet work in spite of these obstacles.
Obstacles I have are the season... Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Winter, Christmas, New Year's... and those all normally reasons to partake of foods and treats I don't normally have the rest of the year, but I refuse to let that be a problem for me this year. I will not gain like last year.

Day 44 - It's not the right time

For me, no really big issues, regular busy life. I have 3 specific time limit nutrition/diet challenges going on. I work part-time, have an empty nest, have plenty of discretionary time that I fill up with volunteering, hiking, walking the dogs, when I am not tending the home fires, cooking, cleaning, gardening, etc. Lots of things to be busy with but mostly discretionary time, so no excuse for me :) DH and I are planning to go away for 7-10 days in October, that will make it more of a challenge. Overall, it is a good time, especially because it is armour for the Christmas - New Years holiday season !!

Day 44 - Its not the right time

Now is the only time we really have so it needs to be the right time.

Because Ive learned its about living as healthy a life as I can day after day, there will never be a better time .
It is true, if I think of my life as the narrow road or the wider road there are times of change.
If I decided its not the right time Id probably end in the ditch pretty fast!

Day 44 100 days It's not the right time

I am struggling a little right now but like Gill's thought of it being on the 'Wider Road', for me its Christmas as the excuse making it more 'challenging!' However it is the right time for me, overall I am following my eating plan, exercising and working towards my goals! 💪😍👌😍🤘😍

It is always the right time for me to act as I plan to continue acting for the rest of my life!

Eat as healthily as I can

Focus on a sustainable-over-the-long-run intake of nutrient dense foods that provide pleasure and satisfaction as well.

Recognize that just because there might be a few occasions coming up that might involve treats or excess, that this is what happens in life and it can be worked around.

I read this chapter this morning. Timing. I understand what Linda is saying. Sometimes you might be better off to wait a bit, think seriously about it, and get your mind and heart headed in the right direction. I wish I had done things differently years ago. However, I didn't. Today I am. Yesterday I did. I have plans for tomorrow. For me 'its the right time.' I feel better. Heathy eating/living makes me happy. That's all that matters.

My experience more recently is knowing how much worse everything would seem if I didn't stick to my eating and exercise plans - even if I have to modify them to the 'wider path' a bit.

100 Days Challenge, Day 44 It's not the right time

Todays assignment

1. Evaluate how your program is going so far. Is this a right time for you to work on losing weight?

While my weight loss seems very slow, it is absolutely the right time for me to continue losing weight.

2. If not, make a list of reasons why it doesnt seem to be the right time. Measure your list against the criteria of major life events or any big issues that demand your time and energy.

3. If losing weight is truly important to you, make it the right time. In the space below, write a few ideas on how to get around the roadblocks in your daily life and make your diet work in spite of those obstacles.

The major roadblock I have to avoid feeling discouraged because the weight loss is slow. The way I make it work in spite of that is to persist, persevere and remain a determined optimist.

Joy is a Choice. Choose joy moment by moment.

When all else fails, persistence prevails.

Injoy:) Carolyn

I'm sorry to hear about your recent losses, Babs, and Jeanne.

What always strikes me is how many really unhealthy people can live to a great old age, and some really fit people just suddenly die of something they didn't know they had. One of the things that always makes me think about my own mortality is seeing the defibrillator being carried around by the first-aid person on organized runs. You just never know when someone's heart might give out - you can't tell by looking at someone.

I hope you don't mind me posting this Peanuts cartoon - it helps me to remember that 'it's the right time!'

Aha
Good point reasons why we dont need to concentrate on our diet or excuses
Recently my mil passed away. It hit me harder than I thought it would and then to see my dh and children all grieving is tough too. I didnt track or keep up with spark that week. But now I need to get back to it! My dh is not doing well with it so of course that makes our lives a little more stressful.
And he decided he wants to retire on June 1st if possible! The day his young wife turns 65.

Oh, my goodness, I like my last two entries for this day, so Im repeating them below.

Babs, Im so sorry for the loss of your sister. Yesterday, I attended the funeral of a friends husband. He had been in poor health for quite a long time, but my friend said, I just wasnt prepared. I dont think we ever are. Thats part of why Im repeating the first entry below. It also helps me to realize that healthy pursuits need to be part of our daily lives, not the entire focus. We can lovingly multitask! emoticon

My previous entries:
8-14-17
Actually, the only real time we have for sure is now. So, yes, the right time is now, no matter how small the healthy step may be.

10-22-16
"If losing weight is important to you, make it the right time." Yes, there really have been a handful of times in my life that I had things that required my attention more than temporarily focusing on healthy eating. But not many. When I am stressed, the need for a good mix of nutrients becomes more not less important actually. But again, Linda is saying to be honest with ourselves, to discern between reasons and excuses, and to outright decide about our focus. If we decide that for a time certain, we are not going to focus on losing, then when we decide we are ready, we may be better equipped to determine what changes we are going to try until it starts working.

From 2016: "Love these lessons and what they (and all of you) have taught me. Thanks to Linda Spangle's books and so many fantastic SP resources, friends... I finally realize and try hard to practice that it is ALWAYS the RIGHT time to make the best choices that I can. It is Too hard to undo too many bad choices. Life can get in my way sometimes but I can choose to live a fit and healthy lifestyle, no matter what, one choice at a time."

In the past it often felt like it was NEVER the right time because of life's craziness. Easier now but not ever easy even after retirement. It is definitely the right time for me. Think about it. Life does not come with a guarantee. So this might be the only 'time' for me.

On March 6, 2018, I lost my sister/who was 10 years younger than me. Cardiac arrest and a stroke. I think that was a huge 'aha' moment for me, as well as a wake up call. Once I started to climb out of my depression time, my sadness (my sister was truly my best friend!), I thought - you better pay closer attention to your own health. Do you (I) want to end up in a nursing home with someone else taking care of you? My answer: No way!

I've been working very hard since then. I 'thought' I was working hard prior to that, but there's always room for improvement. The right time is now. The right time is My time. I can do this and I will do this.

Is it the right time for me? IT MUST BE! I CHOOSE IT TO BE! THERE IS NO BETTER TIME! IT IS NOW OR NEVER!

I have used the excuse of "It's not the right time for me." several times in the past. Even when I said it is NOW OR NEVER or THIS IS THE YEAR I have not followed through by using this excuse. It seems to come into my mind and out of my mouth at will as if I have no control some days. This team is so important to me for many reasons, but one of those reasons is that you help me be accountable and focused. Thank you for that!

Day 44 Its not the right time

~ Is something in life demanding a huge amount of your time and energy right now? "Dieting" (focusing on weight loss) requires a certain amount of time and energy, so if you're already feeling drained, you might need to ease up and take a bit of a wider road for now.

Life does not stop when we lose weight, so we need to make losing weight work as part of our normal days, routines and social events When losing weight becomes important enough, you'll figure out how to make room for it being "the right time" :)

If losing weight is truly important to you, make it the right time.

1. Are you currently facing a major life issue?

Not at this moment. Later today I find out the results of my mammogram.

2. Is something demanding a huge amount of your time and energy right now? Yes, its Christmas and we have family guests staying with us. It's a busy and fun time. I am not focused on weight loss, but I would like to lose weight. Hmmm....

3. Are you simply dealing with your ordinary life? Yes.

How is your program is going so far? I am continuing with 100 DWL so I am preparing for future weight loss. But at this moment my weight is on the uptick.

Write a few ideas on how to make your diet work in spite of these obstacles.

Portion control, more freggies, record all meals eaten.

Perhaps you should postpone until after __________ is over. OK our dear guests leave on Friday and we head south on Saturday. Saturday we leave with an empty pantry and fridge, easy to get started for the New Year and diet.

It would be better to just maintain your weight so you can focus on an extraordinary thing happening in your life. Having our guests with us this Christmas is an extraordinary
event, so I can forgive myself, so I will enjoy this time with them and focus on my diet in a few days.

I choose not to worry about weight loss today Wed, Thurs, Fri!

The 'RIGHT TIME & DAY TO LOSE WEIGHT' Saturday, Dec. 30th! My diet requires my full attention and commitment. I have to focus, menu plan, shop for groceries, prepare nutritious meals, eat nutritious calorie appropriate meals... and repeat, day after day.

In 2016 I lost 32 pounds in the first 3 months! I did it before I can do it again.

Di - I hope this will be the time that you stick with us all the way to Day 100 - I still have some lessons that I gloss over, but there are more of them that I've learnt and don't need to repeat now. It's interesting isn't it? Identifying feelings is still something I'm very bad at!

I love that quote/meme Phyllis - well found!

Yes, it's always the time to be mindful of our health (physical, mental, spiritual). There is no-one else out there who will rescue us and do it for us - it's our responsibility.

I might decide to take a rest day every now and then - on those days, it's time to rest. But every day is the 'right day' for me these days - I plan all my meals, I eat healthily, I exercise every day.

I just went back and read what I wrote three years' ago - I was still procrastinating then - I'm so glad I got going (with the help of this book and Spark). I'm lighter, happier, more confident.

There are some powerful statements. I agree with you.

It's definitely the 'right time' right now. I too have put myself in the position I'm in - last. That is not the place I belong in. I have learned that if I put myself first it's the place for me to be for my family's sake. I feel better. Less stress. I'm happy. It's a win-win situation. Love roasted veggies. I plan to make some jello salads too. I'm a salad freak. All kinds of salads are good in my opinion. So I'll make a couple for the holidays. I even like SF jello.

This post is as relevant as it was 2 years ago.

My right time was triggered by external motivation ie the Hospital said, 'Do it or your situation will get worse.' They set me a weight loss target and dietary guidance. These guidelines, and the 2 days I spent on a 'Liver Ward' as a Stage 2 amongst some very poorly 4s and 5s , changed my whole motivation. I lost the starter weight they suggested; followed the diet to the letter and found myself in a better place.

Then the struggle started. Increasingly, I've gone off plan. I've regained some of the lost weight - not a huge amount - 4-5 lbs - but enough to feel annoyed and then 'Oh, so what...' about it.

The truth is that the motivation was external. I may theoretically understand what I can personally control and what internal 'triggers' control what I eat, why and when. What tends to defeat me is why these triggers over-ride common sense.

I have never made it to the end of the 100 by posting here. I've read the entire book but glossed over sections I found uncomfortable. This is why I need to step back in and stick with It. Even if I need to go though it again and again.

The right time. I have let events in my life put myself on the back burner plenty of times. Busy times, stressful times. I am not going to beat myself up about those. I am just glad that I am finally getting my head in the right place to get myself healthier. It is a head thing. When your head is not in it, it isn't the right time because you won't stick with it.
Now that I have gotten started I don't need to let things get me distracted. This is the right time to go all the way to goal. It is a lifestyle change that needs to be maintained.

Actually, the only real time we have for sure is now. So, yes, the right time is now, no matter how small the healthy step may be.

Love that quote Maribeth!

Day 44, it's not the right time..

Okay...I'm catching up here so this post will be brief - still doing strength exercises every day but I'm bummed that I missed posting for a few days.

What I have taken from this lesson is that it is ALWAYS the right time. Well, sometimes it may be the right time to let up a bit; but it is NEVER the right time to give up! For myself, I have been on this journey long enough that I won't give up so.....It is STILL the right time.

I'm playing catch up after getting distracted by things I normally don't have and am glad most are done and behind me so I can refocus and attend to my "self maintenance". I'm the only one in my place so I can give myself the attention required.

Day 44: It's not the right time
When you struggle with staying on your diet, it's easy to excuse your bad behavior by deciding that it simply wasn't the right time. You may be right. Sometimes, it really isn't the right time to be on a diet. But since life will always include job challenges, dinner parties and vacations, there will never be a perfect time to work on losing weight.
Evaluate your timing
If you're debating whether or not it's the right time to be on a weight-loss program, let these questions help you decide:
1. Are you currently facing a major life issue? For example, are you getting a divorce, moving to a new home, or even finishing a degree? Issues of this magnitude usually happen only a dozen or so times in life, and when they do, it's truly not the right time to be on a diet.
2. Is something in life demanding a huge amount of your time and energy right now? Things such as remodeling your home, planning your daughter's wedding, or even being a school teacher at the end of the year can all take a lot out of you. Dieting also requires a certain amount of energy, so if you're already feeling drained, you might need to hold off on your plan for a while.
3. Are you simply dealing with your ordinary life? Just because your days are crammed with events, demands at work, and small children doesn't necessarily mean it's not the right time to lose weight.
In reality, you can make any time be the right time. Simply choose a time period that looks fairly reasonable and label it the right time. Then move past your excuses and make it work. Tell yourself that you are capable of eating right and exercising in spite of your hectic life. Then find a way to do it.
Is it really important?
If you keep going off a diet because it's not "the right time," maybe what you're really saying is that losing weight isn't important to you, at least not right now. That's okay. There's nothing wrong with moving it lower on your priority list.
But don't assume you can keep it there just because you're busy. When losing weight becomes important enough, you'll figure out how to make room for it being the right time.
Evaluate how your program is going so far. Is this a right time for you to work on losing weight?
If not, make a list of reasons why it doesn't seem to be the right time. Measure your list against the criteria of major life events or any big issues that demand your time and energy.
If losing weight is truly important to you, make it the right time. In your notebook, write a few ideas on how to get around the roadblocks in your daily life and make your diet work in spite of those obstacles.
YES THIS IS THE TIME AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE
I may hit road bumps and detours, but I'm still on the road to a healthier me.
We all have stress. I know my body needs to be healthier. No matter what life throws at me I choose to have a healthier body. I will take care of my responsibilities and stay on my plan. I may not be perfect all the time but I will strive everyday to do the best I can and yes sometimes I do need to choose better choices.
i have stress in my life but who doesn't. some more than others. But we need to deal with it the best of our abilities. If you wait to be stress free that isn't going to happen.
it is a mindset and i now have my mindset for success. Sometimes you have to take what you learned in the past and apply it. so i took one thing from my past dieting experience
Roadblocks-
Being tired - need to plan ahead esp. when you have a busy day.
No plan- Need to keep food stocked in fridge and cupboard of healthy foods
Lazy- Need to measure and weigh unless not home then need to eyeball as best to my ability. It means I have to relearn how to live my life without overeating my way through it.
Stress- Need to find other ways to deal with stress
Time-Need to make time to prep and plan means I have to relearn how to live my life without overeating my way through it.
Making sure I have time to food shop for healthy food,
IT ALWAYS IS the RIGHT TIME to make the best choices that I can. It is IT IS hard to undo too many bad choices. Life can get in the way sometimes but we can choose to live a fit and healthy lifestyle, no matter what, one choice at a time.
I have the tools from TOPS and the mindset- so no excuses-

Day #44 It's Not the Right Time
When I really look at my current life, there is no better time to be as healthy and active as I can be. It is the right time!

I have the time because I'm retired.
I have the tools because of all the free sites available to me.
I have good fresh produce available, some in our own garden.
I am healthy and generally happy.
I have inspiration available 24/7 for living the lifestyle I want.

I find it so encouraging to read back through these threads - I can see how much progress I have made.

Now is definitely the right time - I am no longer ambivalent. Tomorrow never comes, and troubles/stresses/reasons to put my life on hold are always just around the corner.

Yesterday I travelled home from visiting my son & his new family. This wasn't a long journey as journeys go - but it was 5 hours on trains between 3pm and 8pm. I found myself looking along the shelves in the station cafe/shop - looked at the cakes and sandwiches, the pots of desserts. I left without buying anything. At the next station interchange, I went into the kiosk and checked out their sandwiches and stuff, and decided 'no, that's not what I want to eat'. By the counter, I saw a little 'Graze' box of protein-packed vegetarian snacks - roasted chickpeas, edame beans, cashews - the box was 28g in weight and had 7g of protein, hi-fibre - a bit of salt and spice and crunch. I decided I would take that one. Then I also chose a 'paelo' cocoa/orange protein bar - that had hemp protein in it at 10g per bar.

OK - so I indulged in the 'buying something to eat while I travel' behaviour, but I managed to channel it into a healthy choice - high protein, no added uglies, vegan, high-fibre. I ate these goodies about 5pm, with a chocolate-flavoured soya milk shake (in a little box I'd packed to take with me). And that was actually really filling and satisfying.

When I got home later, I felt the urge to eat - which is a habitual trigger I'm aware of after something stressful. I didn't deny the urge, but I was careful - I chose some seedy oatcakes with Marmite - with a cup of decaff Earl Grey tea. I also had a few walnuts and brazils (not salted or roasted). Then I stopped.

It is very easy for me to get completely off-track when my routine changes - especially being away from home, in some-one else's environment, or travelling. So, on-balance, I was happy that I was AWARE of my old habits to search for something to eat, and rather than trying to resist it completely, I made healthier choices (and didn't do myself any weight-damage!)

Today, I'm home from being away - and I have another five days holiday from work - today is the right time to do a robust menu plan for the coming week - and not just allow myself to drift through the Easter weekend without a plan!!!!

Now IS the right time ... and it always has been in regard to living a healthy 'lifestyle' - which includes so much more than just the food one eats - so many other things impact our body's ability to let go of weight ... stress, the type of food one eats, the time of day one eats, whether one's body is dealing with 'health issues', level of activity, etc. etc.

I wish I had always had the mindset of a healthy lifestyle and I would not presently be dealing with the health results of yo-yo dieting, poor food choices and lack of will or motivation to have incorporated 'daily exercise' as a habit just like brushing my teeth!

HOWEVER, it's never too late! So, yes NOW IS THE RIGHT TIME ... no matter what I face - current health conditions, future ones, aging, etc. - no better time to be living as healthy a lifestyle as possible ... to be better able to face/handle these things if I have to and to maybe THRIVE a bit more, live longer and happier than if I do not make this choice...NOW.

I agree with what Wanda has said. However, as I worked through this book for the second time I realized that although many of those 'reasons' did sap my energy at the time had I been eating healthier and exercising I probably would have weathered some of those 'storms' a lot easier. The main outcome of delaying really knuckling down and getting this 'work done' is that I am older and less healthy than I was in times past.

I will say that in a week I will be going to a doctor's appointment that may uncover a potentially serious health issue beyond the scope of what I am dealing with now. If confirmed it will be life altering if that is the case but I have decided that I will do my best no matter what the prognosis is.

My conclusion is: NOW is the right time no matter what!

Day 44 - Yes! It is the right time!
I've spent many years thinking that now is not the right time. There would be a time, sometime in the future when life would hold no stresses, all my children would be happy and healthy at the same time, we would be financially secure for retirement, nothing would be broken and in need of repair, no one I knew would be hurting.........well now I know that all those things are not going to happen....at not all at the same time. Yes, some of them are true right now; but there is absolutely no use waiting for the ideal time.

I had to start...fail...restart....fail again...restart....but each time I learned and each time I brought something new when I went back to the table. (sometimes the new thing could be measured in pounds, extra pounds.) I also brought determination, the belief that there was a path for me and that I would find it. I'm so glad I found 100 days!

Phyllis - love your plans for the season. I think one of the most important is "some me time" every day. That is in my plan too. I struggle with some blue days during the holidays and the me time is essential.

Maribeth - great quote! Thanks!

Sleepy - I think that if Linda Spangle were writing the book today, she might avoid the use of the word "diet" in this lesson. I realize that the term "diet" has come to mean a temporary eating change. This book was written several years ago though, in 2006. At that time we weren't using the terms "food plan" or "lifestyle" so much.

Day 44 Its not the right time

In this lesson I struggle with the wording of going on or off a diet, since I am working on developing a healthier lifestyle that I can live with permanently. I can see that during major stressful times I may need to adjust my focus not worry about tracking, just make healthy food choices but to totally abandon all I have worked for seems like a bad choice.

All the more reason to build a framework of healthy choices to fall back on when necessary.

Day #44 It's Not the Right Time
During this holiday season I will stick to the No S plan as much as possible and remember that my main problem is procrastination and stress as far as overeating.

My notebook ideas for getting around the roadblocks:
Take time to plan:
Take time to chart on the nutrition tracker
Take time to weigh and measure when possible (when I'm the cook).
Take time to do one thing every day "just for me"! Rest, relax, take a deep breath!

Day 44 100 days It's not the right time

Yes it is the right time! I am not where I used to be. Need to keep on this is my lifestyle change. There is no going back tto my old ways. I choose to have a healthier body. I will take care of my stress due to work and home life and I will stay on my lifestyle change.

My lifestyle change is following the exchanges and now working on getting exercise into my life other than steps I get at work.

Holidays and family and friends get-together can be challenging but if you plan ahead . Of course you wont have your measuring tools so you need to know how to eyeball it. watch the portions. choose one dessert.

I don't let the scale or stress change my new lifestyle. but have been getting cravings at night. so need to figure out how to squash that.

I've been on this journey for many years and had ups and downs along the way, but overall, yes this is definitely the right time. I am not where I want to be, but thank God I'm not where I used to be. Every day on Spark is a day in a positive direction.

I may hit road bumps and detours, but I'm still on the road to a healthier me.

Challenges:
Returning to work and attending 8 weeks (in week 4) of full time training.
Holidays, but they will always be there.

Triumphs:
Staying on Spark even on the not so great days.
Walking away the stress.
Bringing a healthy lunch from home.
Realizing a Holiday is just ONE day and not a week or a month!

Maribeth, I keep learning too. Reading my post from last time, things have not changed much.

So is it really the right time? YES, but what change will I choose to make?

Day 44: Is this the right time?

Yes, this is the right time. I have stress but I know my body needs to be healthier. If I do not make it healthier I may have major life issues because of my weight. No matter what life throws at me I choose to have a healthier body. I will take care of my responsibilities and stay on my plan. I will not go off my plan.

Evaluate my plan so far: I like how things are going but there are parts I do not like. I seem to be stuck in a 3 lb. yo-y0(Still am, but a little lower). I lose a few I gain a few. I believe it is caused by S days and too much fat/carbs. But I do not want to limit too much or I am worried I will not stay on my plan.

I plan to limit my S treats to one a day, or 2 smaller ones, and limit bread to 2 slices of light bread a day having only one for breakfast and one for lunch (if I choose). Sometimes I wonder if I am eating enough on No S days. (I sometimes limit on S days... I do follow the light bread "rule".)

My roadblocks:
My mind: keeping my head in the game.
Stress about health: I want to keep my body as healthy as possible
Time: Making sure I have time to food shop for healthy food, time to exercise, time to read the book and post on the team page.

I have a general plan that allows a fair amount of flexibility in WHAT I put on my plates for meals. I've worked out a routine for what groceries I have on hand most of the time, so I can always come home and have a simple, moderate meal pretty fast. But I can also get just about any food out (except sweets) any time I need to instead. this helps keep me from thinking that I haven't stuck to my plan. Even a hamburger and French fries at lunch can be part of my plan, though I wouldn't eat them often (or probably the whole order at once.)

If I'm honest, it really doesn't take much to be able to eat a few good meals a day, and that's all I need. (Giving up snacking on weekdays greatly simplified things, too. Way more planning to have the "right" snack. When the plan is simpler, it's easier for it to always be the right time. It's only complicated or really restrictive programs that take a lot of planning. If I develop a disease, I'll definitely spend more time on that. )

I know it is the "right time" but I also know that I have problems when things go wonky. When I plan I am fine but when those plans are turned upside down I struggle.
I need to learn to deal with chaos.

goal is to be able to walk again

I join in wishing you Happy Birthday, Leslie!

The thing I like about this lesson is that Linda does say that there are times that it is not the right time to embark on the journey. I have had those times when I just wasn't ready. The rest of the lesson really says evaluate seriously if it is one of those times or we're using it as an excuse, There are valuable ideas here!
