I had heard/read somewhere that Qn E 1 tried to have as many Irish killed as possible and King James 1 had many Irish slaves sent to the New World; seven years before African slaves arrived in Jamestown.

No, indentured servants were not the same as slaves; however, not all Europeans who were sent to America were not indentured servants. Some were sold as slaves.

I had known this, but it's so nice to see someone actually writing about it. Too bad it's not in school history books.

Wasn't Georgia started with European prisoners?

I was aware that prisoners & the poor were often shipped here but I was surprised that so many children were sent here as slaves just because they were orphans.

Very interesting. I'll have to check it out.
I've always found it interesting that it wasn't just Whites that sent Africans over to be slaves. Africans did it, too! I can't even imagine.

I have a really good book called To Be a Slave, which has personal accounts by former slaves. Very good. I remember one account specifically that an elderly woman had written about how the Blacks were enticed by red material strewn on the ground, leading to the slave ships. :(
So sad.

And we all lived happily ever after...

Thanks for sharing this. I have often wondered if any of my ancestors who came over when this was still a British colony were indentured.

Many of my ancestors came to the states as a number of things that I would call slaves. Indentured servants that would never live long enough to pay off their debt, so their children would have to work to pay it off. Prisoners, In many cities, if a person was found homeless, they were given to a master and had to work for free until the master decided they had learned the value of work.

One of my husbands ancestors was from Scotland and drowned when the slave ship he was in went down. All of the Irishmen in the hull died. They were destined for the "colonies" to work as slaves.

I found this article very interested & wanted to share it with the rest of you.

Africans Weren’t the Only Ones Sent to North America as Slaves

We have all read about the horrible conditions of the slave trade from Africa to North America and elsewhere. Many historians believe that between 9 and 11 million people were taken out of Africa by European slave traders and deposited alive on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. However, they were not the only slaves to be forcibly shipped across the Atlantic. British prisoners also were shipped off to colonial America. Once they arrived in the Colonies, these prisoners were the legal equivalent of slaves.
