One thing I didn't mention about Legacy - it is your tree & just not everyone can see it. You can share it, but you choose who you share it with. Also, you can not look at the other trees.

RMUL2013, I was able to download a gedcom file from Ancestry & then upload it to Legacy. Ancestry wouldn't let me transfer my media. I had to do that manually.

That's one of the things I like about Legacy - what media I add is mine. They don't take it away. Also, there are no annual fees. I own my tree outright.

I still have my Ancestry tree but all new information is going to my Legacy tree. You can download the Legacy program free & then you will only pay the one-time charge if you want the extras. I think it's worth it.

For STLOUISWOMAN,

Where you able to transfer all of the information from FTM to Legacy 9 without any issues?

I have had FTM since 1999 or 2000. My latest version is 2011. I had it installed by one of the computer repair shops because I was having some work done on several of my computers. They said they would transfer the old FTM that was on the computer to the new 2011 which I gave them to install.

They showed me at the shop that they had done this and I was surprised to see that the information that I had previously on the people who are still alive was missing, like the birth dates, place of birth, etc. Has anyone ever had this happen before?

Even though I still have that information in paper files, it took the wind out of my sails because it is so time consuming to replace all of that work that I had already done.

Any suggestions?

When I got my first computer I didn't have any programs for anything and wanted one so looked over the choices at the computer store (remember those?) selling lots of programs on all sorts of stuff and saw the family tree program and bought it for about $20.00. I didn't know anything about programs and at that time that was how you participated in a program. I've never regretted it.

Then I tried the cheapest FTM program, but that wasn't good enough so tried a better one .. I've had the World program now for about 3 years and find it expensive but invaluable. I wouldn't be without it!
.
I also belong to a genealogy club. I've listened to lectures on lots of programs, saw how they work and none compare IMHO!

Last month 5 people have contacted me about someone in my tree. I'm so happy to respond and learn more and all 5 have turned out to be distant relatives. I will meet one of them in early March.

My projects are to complete (can I ever say that?) a line and get it out of the computer and into the hands of my family, or others in it so they have it too.

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

To take that question even further...
If I were to start completely over in my computer, which Genealogy type programs would/should I choose?

I have an ancient version I got on a disc. I doubt it would work now. I like some of the features but not enough to spend time and money on it right now.

I have Family Tree maker 2017. I still do most of my research on Ancestry, but move it over to Familytree maker. I had used the old edition till they said Ancestry said they would no longer support it. I like Family tree maker mostly because they pop up and tell me if something doesn't look right. Sometimes it is just a typo on my part and sometimes it it something I need to research. Recently my son in law gave me some info about his Mexican family. Somehow I dropped the 1 when I put in one of the years. Ancestry didn't say anything, but FTM told me real quick that I had a son that was born 1000 years after his father. I also like that it is easier it print trees out for family reunions.

Objects in the mirror will get thinner than they now appear
