I know this is a late response but in answer to some of your questions.
I do recommend doing either the Hatfield McCoy Marathon or the double halves depending on your goal. The double half caters to 50 State Half Marathoners because they are in separate states - West Virginia and Kentucky. The full marathon can either count for either state but not both.

Upcoming Races:
Blister in the Sun Marathon - 3 Aug
Tupelo Marathon - 31 Aug
Beat the Blerch Marathon - 21 Sep
Flying Monkey Marathon- 23 Nov
3 Bridges Marathon - 27 Dec
Texas Marathon - 1 Jan
Little Rock Marathon - 1 Mar

I'm looking at this upcoming race but it is so weird. It's advertised as two different HMs at the same time and you can run both (I guess back-to-back) or a marathon.

I guess the organizers figure that they can offer two HMs as the only extra effort is having more timing equipment. And the benefit to HM runners is that they can choose one that's relatively flat or hilly.

What makes no sense is why anyone would do the "double HM" which is only almost twice the price of the marathon. The instructions say you get the marathon medal plus the two HM medals plus three shirts. Is that really worth the extra $60 over the cost of the marathon alone? Of course, the official website says the double "SAVES MONEY!" since you're doing two HMs in one trip :-p

On the other hand, there are some nice things about this race (water stops every mile, scenic, etc.) and I like the amusing theme. Just have to decide if it's worth the 6-hour drive to get there.
