emoticon Beth, on an emoticon finish. You had a great first experience.

I had the same experience with the lead marathoners. In my race, they were running for money and qualifying for Boston. We were quickly directed to the right, and I totally understood. It was amazing to see the intensity and courage these runners displayed.

I am glad you posted your results.

Congrats on your races! Although mine wasn't great, I still posted a solid time and am learning to appreciate the fact that I finished despite the challenges. I wasn't a fan of running on the concrete, so this probably isn't a race that I'd do again. But, it was nice to see my hometown in a new way.

BTW, I turned my frustrating finish a few weeks ago into a strong 10K run today and PR'd. If things don't go as planned, there's always another opportunity to try again!

I just realized that I never came back and posted an update. I loved it! I was so cold at the start, but overall I'm glad that it was cooler rather than hot. It wasn't the prettiest course, but there was still a lot to see. I didn't have any real expectations for pace/time. Since it was my first, I just wanted to finish. My family was at the finish waiting for me, and it was my birthday. It made it that much more special.

I did stay downtown the night before, since we are from out-of-town, and that made the morning easy. The start was a fairly short walk from the hotel. We had been down near Canton the day before for my nephew's First Communion.

Rosie, I'm sorry that you had such a tough time. :(

It was mostly flat, but there was a bit of an incline near the end. It felt weird to be running on a highway. I didn't notice too much more attention given to the marathoners, but my family said that the first marathoners came in shortly after I finished and that they were having the people running the half "get out of the way." After that, all the talk was focused on those running the marathon. I didn't notice because I was wrapped up in my own little world at that point. We didn't stay for a lot of the festivities. We went to the aquarium (I wanted to go some place that I could walk around a little bit) and then had a 6-hour car trip home.

emoticon to hear your race was less than expected, Rosie. I hope you enjoyed the festivities and the post party.

I agree with pastafarian that if there is a M and HM, the party is for marathoners. The HM in Chicago was a great party, and it started as soon as the first runner crossed the line! By the time I finished, the party was in full swing (still food left for me, and even a vegetarian line which was like an express line).

emoticon for finishing the race!

How did it go, Beth?

I did not have a great race overall. I was running even splits to meet my goal and then I had bad foot, shin, and calf cramps starting at mile 10. By mile 11, I was walking some and walked a lot of that last mile. I fueled and ate as I normally would and haven't cramped up before, but somehow my system was still out of whack. Sigh.
Hope you had a better race day!

I'm running this half though it's not my first. I've heard the course is flat and honestly, isn't the prettiest to look at while you run since there's lots of concrete. I'm originally from Cleveland which was the draw.

Good luck! Looking forward to hearing how ti went for you.

Based on what my friends have told me, it's very flat. If you're used to hills, running a very flat race can be surprisingly grueling because you're using the same muscles over and over without a break. (But if you're an Ohioan, this should not be a problem!)

It also shares some of the faults that other combo (M, HM) races do. The marathoners get the glory. The HMers get 2nd class treatment. As an example, there are only pacers for the marathon, not the half. Only the marathoners get a discount at Rock Hall membership. And so on. Sigh.

It is overwhelming, your first Half and training for it. I just finished my first Half in Asheville, and I signed up for my second Half in Chicago on May 18th. I figured why let all this training go to waste!

Train to be injury free.
Build your miles slowly.

Make your first goal to finish

Is anyone going to be at the Cleveland Marathon on May 18th? Or know anything about it that they want to share with me? I will be running the Half Marathon, and it will be my first. I suddenly feel like I should know so much more than I do.
