Everything has come back enough that I've eaten a handful of green beans and a cherry tomato from the intrepid plants that the deer ate nearly to the ground. I won't get a real crop, but at least I've gotten a taste. Next year, I will have a fence. But then, it will probably be GOPHERS!

If you are in some areas, your neighborhood association will come after you for front yard veggie gardens. You could probably sneak okra in at the back of borders and use chard or kale for borders without a problem.

I am thrilled that after years of trying I finally found a spot that gets a little sun and isn't too wet. It's just a little spot. I'm getting about 3 tomatoes a day. emoticon but I made some homemade spaghetti sauce and planning on making salsa maybe tomorrow plus plenty to eat fresh. My zucchini plant isn't quite dead yet. I have blooms just waiting for more zucchini and the peppers that I thought were shot have 2 peppers on them and a lot of blooms. I might make my whole front yard a garden next year. It's the only place that gets sun. Plus it would cut down on mowing the grass. What do you think the neighbors would think? emoticon

Gardening in Texas has been a challenge this year also. First the floods, then the drought. We've had good luck with tomatoes and southern peas, a little okra, some peppers. Ma planted seed for parsnips and chard a couple days ago and we have a new potato planting along with some more cream peas. Hoping for cooler weather and a little rain before it all dries up and blows away. We got about half an inch Friday but it is so hot things dried right up.

At least you have rain, Suellen--in CA all we have is fires! The drought is causing the wildlife to come to places they wouldn't normally approach and they have eaten my tomatoes, peppers, green beans and squash down to skeletons. They weren't dead, though, so I kept watering them and now it looks as though they might make it. I've put an electric fence around the garden now and it appears to be working. I hope it stays that way.

I'm starting to get a few tomatoes. There's a lot of green ones on the vines. I've gotten 3 zucchini but the plant looks pretty dead. It got knocked over with one of the storms that came through. We've had a TON of rain. Wettest July on record.

I built a new planter around a maple tree by making a ring of rocks, laying a thick layer of newspapers right over the ground, and then filling it with planter mix. I've had some mushrooms come up in it and am wondering whether it might be from the newspapers. It's working to keep the weeds down, though!

I planted onions late and they are just starting to come up. I only plan to use them for salad onions, so it doesn't matter that they won't get big. Your lettuce looks good.

It may not be mold, Suellen. My summer squash leaves developed gray patches and I think it may just be part of the leaf--or possibly mineral deposits left when the water from the sprinkler evaporates.

Gray dusty spots on the leaves of my zucchini which I'm assuming are mold. emoticon I have tons of tomatoes but have still to pick the first one. They are just not ripening. We've had some heat and sun the last couple of days. Maybe that will help.

All of this rain is certainly hard on the plants. I planted lavender, delphinium, and beards tongue in a mound and they are all struggling.

I have a couple of zucchini that should be ready soon and a lot of tomatoes. Just waiting for them to ripen.

I planted 2 zucchini plants in a hill and the deer came and nibbled the leaves off the first night, so I stuck some yellow squash seeds into the hill and left the stubs of the zucchini. Today, I noticed that the seeds are sprouting and there's a new leaf on the zucchini, so I may end up with two kinds of squash growing in the same hill.

And, I have found a 'perfect' way to weed my garden ! We have a Yorkie, Lexie. Also, a fenced-in yard. I still stay ourside with her.

So, while she is 'wandering' around the yard I pull weeds ! I have a 'raised' garden. So, I just have to walk around it. Sometimes I only find I-2 weeds; I say I bet I have the best weed-free garden in our neighborhood!

We've done this for years and years in different ways, but now I have a couple of old Rubbermaid storage bins that were no longer good for storage. We made sure there were plenty of holes in the bottom for drainage and then put in some dry matter (leaves, grass or shredded newspaper), a layer of soil (just plain dirt) and started adding kitchen waste. I just dug up earthworms from under our rabbit hutch to begin with and tossed them into the bin, but you can buy red worms if you want. It should be kept moist, but not soggy and you should turn it every once in a while to help make sure everything gets eaten. I keep a piece of plywood over the top to conserve the moisture and keep the animals out of it. There is usually enough moisture in the waste, but during the summer I will sometimes have to add more. I put everything except meat into the compost (the dog gets the meat scraps)--egg shells, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, all veggie waste, paper towels and napkins...it all gets eaten by the worms and makes the yummiest soil ever.

Look up vermiculture online and you will find out everything you need to know.

I have a bin that I keep earthworms in and feed all my veggie scraps to them. It's the best compost/garden/potting soil ever, but I always have lots of volunteer veggies in it. I get potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, squash, watermelon and anything else whose seeds may have ended up in the worm bin. It's rather fun, really, to see what comes up.

DH and I have a fruit and veggie garden in the backyard. What I am really excited about is the large planter in the front where I have started an herb garden. I can't wait to start using fresh herbs from my very own patch in my cooking. emoticon

Sounds like everyone is off to a great start. I have some seeds from my peppers & hope that they will spout. So far I have tomatoes & Peppers. Would like to add more veggies, need to do more shopping. Can you realty grow lettuce in a hanging basket? Sounds like a great idea.

I used some old seeds and they are sprouting. I wasn't sure they would grow, but they are growing. Can't wait until I can harvest some veggies.

Yes, that nice organic soil can smell pretty rich...er...ripe! The saran wrap ought to work for a short while, but don't let mold develop. I like to use those boxes that the baby salad greens come in and I use the top as a dome.

The weather caster is calling for storms this weekend. I am going to the store to get some saran wrap o place over my containers in case of excessive rain and also to keep my squirrels out of my new potting soil and seeds. I figured the saran wrap will act lie a terrarium until the seeds start to sprout emoticon

This is a pic of my new plants and seed boxes

The above plant is one of the two tomato plants my DH brought home

I had wanted to keep my salad garden in the RV for easy access for salads but I bought organic seeds and potting soil and I am pretty sure a cow may have helped with the soil. At least it smells like it emoticon emoticon

We've had pretty nasty storms go through here the last two nights and all I could think about was "Oh no! Please don't damage my plants!" Now I know how a farmer must feel whose livelihood is tied to the weather.

Janice, you are going to have to sell cherry and grape tomatoes this year! That is a LOT of cherry tomatoes!

Suellen, I admire your tenacity. Keep trying until you win!

I used to plant a gi-normous garden when the kids were small (and until they were grown) and then we preserved a lot of it to eat during the winter. Later, my DS1 bought land near ours, but he didn't live here, so we looked after it and there was a huge, fenced garden area that had been neglected. I began to reclaim it and eradicate the wild blackberries that had overgrown it and eventually, DS moved his family here and I began to co-op the garden with my DIL. At first, I would do all the rototilling and get things planted and she would help me take care of it; ultimately, she has taken over the gardening and now I do all the canning when the harvest comes in and we all share.

I try planting tomatoes every year and maybe some other vegetables. Every year they rot out from the bottom. We have way too much shade in the yard and what is in the sun floods every time it rains. Last year was the first time that I got any tomatoes but got them planted late so they really came on by the time of the first frost. >:( But that must be a good spot so hubby built me a little raised plot 8 x 2 for tomatoes and 3 x 3 for some peppers and zucchini. I'll be shocked if I get any vegetables but I'll die trying. LOL

I planted my 'raised' garden with seeds this year! I have always before used seedlings. I will be going back to that way.

I planted cucumbers;radishes;carrots;spinach;leaf lettuce. Hubby planted his tomatoes in containers. He has 19 plants going. I plant organic.

We aren't doing gardening because we're moving in August, but I usually plant tomatoes, strawberries, squash and a variety of herbs, especially cilantro and basil.

If you are growing your own flowers or veggies or fruit, tell us about it. Let's learn about gardening and start growing healthy food. No garden is too small, even a window herb garden counts!
