Its great to see the interest - Are you are working out how many steps you actually do in a day?
EVERY step counts!!
I take little steps - sort of duck shuffle steps really - and this morning I stripped my bed and put the sheets in the washing machine - just doing that was 500 steps!!
Keep a count on your own steps- you will be amazed at how many you do even if you are sedentary most of the day - there are those toilet trips, trips to get more drinking water, steps getting washed and dressed in the morning and showered and undressed in the evening etc!! emoticon
ALL these steps will count in the trek!!

Virtual ones are very plentiful - but in reallife - you might see an odd one's web in a bush, covered in dew - but as far as actually coming into contact - rare - they are there but not obvious!!
You will get going with FitBit - they have a great web site you can link to and syncing to Sparks as well - you learn a lot about your movement -
I have an Ultra - that's been replaced by the FitBit One - which is fantastic - its more than a pedometer!!
But while you are checking things out - look at BodyBug - I know nothing about it but Sparks recommend it!! (as they do FitBit!!)
www.bodybugg.com/ just check that is the American web site - It can be synced to Sparks too!!
This is a better link

Thanks so much, Emmabe...that really helps---I was afraid none would fit-being able to wear it 'round the neck would really help. I'll check out the FITBIT site. The reason he suggested a "cheap one" is cuz they'd pick up "all" movement...but I'm wanting to get going again well, anyway.
By the way, I'm ALSO ARACHNAPHOBIC! AHHH!!! emoticon emoticon
Just HOW plentiful ARE they??? emoticon

I was asked for an Aussie Bush song for you to sing on the trek - this one should amuse you "There's a redback on the toilet seat"

This is a hard question for me to answer as I am not American and I am not sure what is available there - however let me give you a few tips.
I wear a FitBit - I love it - and wear it 24hrs a day (except in the shower!!) but its not so cheap - I think about $65 for the cheapest model - it syncs to Sparkpeople too.
There are many other pedometers on the market - but the biggest problem I had (and I was big before too) was the step size - they none of them would take a stride length that was small enough for me - I walk w2ith very small steps - more of a duck waddle shuffle - and the pedometers wouldn't pick my steps up properly.
The FitBit does and can be adjusted to a very short stride length.
You can get pedometers (I think Omron makes ione) that work in your pocket and can be hung round your neck under clothes.
Some of my members fix theirs on an elastic strap round their thigh under slacks
BUT whatever you get - do get a safety strap for it as well - and ALWAYS fix the safety strap when you are wearing it - I know they are only about $3 in USA from Amazon and they are well worth the money.
Many pedometers have dropped off, or fallen down the toilet or been left on clothes and put through a washing machine - and they do not swim well..
I know Sparkpeople has a pedometer in their shop - I know nothing about it
The FitBit web address is
www.fitbit.com/au

Maybe a dumb question---my therapist was wondering 'bout me getting a pedometer JUST THIS LAST WEEK---he asked me what had kept me from it before---I told him there was NO REASON for me to have-I just don't MOVE---which he already knew...he recommended getting just a cheap pedometer that "would" measure "any" movement...see where I am, and really try to increase from there. Soooo...with him just having said this-this kind of excites me---that maybe I can do it with you guys---I've just gotten going again losing---have lost 13 lbs in the last 6 weeks or so..."HAD LOST" 165 lbs a couple years back...used to do water aerobics...
ANYWAY---the QUESTION!:-)....
Another thing that held me back from getting a pedometer was being so heavy...not knowing if one would fit...or what to get?....Any suggestions???...Thanks...

Are you ready to take on The Bibbulmin Track and trek through the unique, ever changing scenery of the South West corner of West Australia ? All that is necessary is simply to want to have fun and increase your exercise, and with 8 exercise levels everyone should be able to find a suitable level.

Move (walking, or any other form of exercise) as much as you can during the 6 weeks of the trek
The aim is to reach a step goal during the 5 days of the Trek each week, and then increase this during the other 2 days in the week by doing the optional trips.

ALL movement counts, not just formal exercise, so it will be much easier to see how many steps you have done if you have a pedometer and wear it all day. This way, even if you are sedentary, the steps you take about the house, washing, cooking, housework or even the trips to the rest room, will be counted!!

As well as step totals and exercise time for the week, I will give you weekly Trek notes that give details, with pictures and hyperlinks, of that week’s trek, so you can see where you get to every day, by exercising!!. Its also a great way to “visit” virtually, and learn about, an area that you will probably never see in your lifetime..

As well as exercise I would like you to write a blog each week on what you saw that week, using the trek notes to guide you. This is optional, though , when you tell me you have written it, I will reward you with a goodie
.

To get you in the mood and to introduce you to the area and conditions of this trek – I have prepared an Introductory Brochure – you can read, download or print it from chairexercisefun.com/ click on “Challenges” button on the right hand side of the front page – then open the folder “Bibbulmun Track Virtual Trek”
You might need to think about what to pack in those virtual back packs you will be using for the trek – remember to keep it light – you have to carry them nearly 1000km (600miles)!! (Groan!!)
So there is also a brochure on packing and another fun one on “bugs and other critters” that you might be interested in

The Bibbulmun Track Trek will start on Sunday 31st March and run for 6 weeks. I realise that is Easter Sunday – so if that causes problems for you – then jump in as soon as it is convenient

Please register your interest – and ask any questions in this thread
