Ok are we starting the book over on May 28th? If so count me in. I think I am going to spend the summer working on my spark! I have the book, both Hard back and Kindle and really, really want to get through the book and be able to discuss it with others. I have belonged to Spark People for a few years now and haven't succeeded with weight loss. (due to, I think, not immersing myself in the program. My health issues are getting worse. Eating to cope with stress is not an option for me. Need to learn, want to learn, Am going to learn how to fan the spark in my life!!! emoticon emoticon

Chap 9- Spread the spark is the theme of this chapter. Use your success to help others reach their goals. Join Spark teams that interest you, or start new teams. Volunteer in your community. Start new interests and hobbies. Share healthful recipes. Get together with others to exercise. If you associate with positive and motivated people, it will keep you on your quest to maintain your weight loss.
Set new long term goals, such as: books you want to read, places you want to visit, and achievements you wish to attain. emoticon

Chap 8-This chapter discusses keeping motivation up, so you can continue to be successful. Reviewing your goals and tracking them is emphasized. Choose a motivational technique to incorporate in your program. Get support from positive people.
Be aware that there will be hurdles to overcome, but if you're following your program, you will get over them. Give yourself a pep talk, such as saying, " I am strong".
Watch an inspirational movie. There are many of them
There are many tools on Spark.com Joining Spark teams to help you stay motivated. There are many choices for you. . Belonging to them will be a source of encouragement.
If you have a setback, get back to the program right away.
This chapter discusses emotional eating, which is a problem for me. Keep a journal to help you see what triggers your eating. For me, its cold, dreary days. I love heat and humidity. I should live in Florida. LOL!

Chap 7 Stage 2 Healthy Diet habits.
Having knowledge will motivate you. Food nourishes and gives us energy. But you need to choose the most healthful foods.
Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grain, and lean meats. Hold off on high fat foods, or eat them sparingly.
This chapter gives you guidelines for calories needed to lose weight and maintain weight.
You can follow a diet plan made for you, or choose one you have made for yourself. Whatever you choose, you should not feel deprived. It should be satisfying and nourishing. Load your plate with raw veggies. They take longer to eat and help you realize when you're full.
Eating breakfast is very important. I eat oatmeal almost every day. When the weather warms, I like smoothies.
Track your exercise consistently, at least 10 minutes per day. I feel better when I exercise. I push myself, even if I don't feel like doing it. I never regret it! I try to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day. During the Spring and Summer, much more. I usually walk 3 miles and garden at least 1 hour per day.
Getting at least seven hours of sleep is so important. I really wish I could get in eight hours a day, but I rarely get that. Getting proper sleep helps you stay away from overeating and eating "junk".

There are a lot of things to think about when reading Ch. 6. Something that I was thinking about is that in order to succeed when making changes in the lifestyle, we need planning and preparedness.

For example, if I choose to drink one cup of water first thing in the morning, preparedness and planning implies that I bring a water bottle that I put on my nightstand every night. That way, when I wake up, I have the water ready to drink.

My fast break goals are, for at least 3 weeks:
++Eat the food that I prepared in advance according to the week menu

I put these

++10 minutes of cleaning daily, according to the schedule planned in advance
++10 minutes of walking or chair dancing, daily
++10 minutes of strength training
Watch Coach Nicole's video of chair Core strength training, daily, for one week.
Start adding 1 exercise a week, until I feel proficient on each of the exercises, like breathing, proper form, etc. I will do strength training every other day, 3 days a week.

I put these goals on my Goal Board to keep them present for this month. At the end of it, I will see what I accomplished, and I will reward myself if I did it. I will put some money in my piggy bank to get a pair of sandals. Hopefully, I will get them before the summer.

Chap. 6
To begin, you need to set 3 simple small goals to help you get motivated. Tracking the goals is very important.
Planning is vital. Set a time to do the planning.
Read something inspirational and reaffirm your goals. Set up your long term goals. Think about what is important and purposeful in your life. Your goals should be unique to you and realistic . You need to write them down.
Tracking your food is so important. This is my downfall. You don't really know how much you' re eating, if you don't track.
Take a before pic, and then later an after pic. You can see your progress.
Prevent temptation by getting rid of the "junk" food in your frig. Replace them with healthy foods. Keep drinking water.
Make sure you have a good comfortable pair of workout shoes. Walking or working out at home is a good way to go. I work out at home, and it's great for me. I do it as soon as I awaken, and then I'm ready for the day. There's no need to go out in the elements, especially this winter. When the weather improves, I will walk outside in my neighborhood.
Find ways to reward yourself, don't berate yourself. When you reach at least 5 out of 7 days on your fast break goals, select a small reward. Very motivating!

For me at first chapter 6 was difficult. It talked about the fast break goals, which I had done when I first started spark people. So I thought, well, this is redundant for me. Then the more I thought about it... I began to think differently. Sparkpeople has shown me that eating is a relationship with myself. Eating, exercise, why I do or don't do it the way I should is about what is going on with me. So as I learn more about the why's and how to manage them... the relationship with food and exercise would mature. No longer if I have a bad day, do I curl up in bed with a bag of M&M's...and wait for the pizza to be delivered. I evaluate what is going on, I understand my trigger points and know when they are coming and prepare for them. So now I have to develop different fast break goals, I'm beyond tracking my meals, and drinking my water... it's time to elevate them to a different level to challenge myself to reach higher goals in my relationship with food and exercise within my abilities. Now my goals are more along the lines of when I feel the stress starting I start doing my walking in place and counting my steps, I find the hard crunch of an apple when I'm upset more satisfying than a greasy soggy pizza crust. Got more work to do on the other goals which will have to do with trying to figure out how to increase exercise, with everything else going on. It was actually more eye opening than I expected it to be. emoticon

Chap 5- Basically, our actions will impact others. When we inspire others, we gain so much positive energy!.
Share your talents, and be a role model. People try to emulate their role models.
Motivating others, caring about them, listening to their ideas, and not being afraid to implement those ideas makes for a good leader.
Community service can enrich your life. what we do matters to ourselves and others.

Ch. 4. I don't know the page because I have the kindle version.I found something in this chapter, among many others, that made me stop and meditate a lot. It talks about getting results where we put our energies. Chris says that there is no mistery on it, but magic.

Can't you imagine how deep and powerful is this thought? It can work toward the positive or negative.

I want to give a very simple example. I decided, about 6 months ago, to make my bed immediately upon waking up. I put energy on thinking about it, planning it, executing it, etc...Well, the results are that I am very efficient and fast doing it. It became a POSITIVE habit. I beat a procrastination mood because while I do it, I am thinking about the next positive activity. It puts me in the mood to accomplish more things.

Craftsfan, I've done pretty good with my commitment since chapter 3; fixing my hair and make-up, exercising my arms with 2 lb weights while playing on the computer. Keeping it simple IS key. I especially, picked up on that in chapter 6! Spiraling upward!!! emoticon

emoticon DLYNN, I see we have a lot in common: not only is my name Lynn [too]; we both confess Jesus as Lord, joined Beth's book club AND I started out at 330 lbs too! We CAN do this!!! emoticon

Covergirl, keeping the right attitude for success leaped off the pages for me in chapter 4; especially, the words optimistic -vs- pessimistic which is really hard for me, Frankly, I've been married to a very negative person for 16 years and though I love him deeply [finding and keeping my joy has not been easy] I've spent most of my married life numbing the pain with food and FB games, but I'm coming out of the downward spiral and finally spiraling upward with God's help and Sparkpeople.

I hope I've not missed anyone.. emoticon

Chap. 4- Fire
This chapter deals with our passion for being healthy. It helps us with goals, dreams, and setbacks.
Being optimistic, not pessimistic is so important. When you falter, you need to get back up and go on.
Cultivate new interests and don't worry about what others think. Be creative. Worrying about what other people think has always been a part if my life. Although, as I have aged, I worry less about that problem.
Journaling is a good thing, but that is another difficult thing for me. I have good intentions, but don't keep it up.
Slow and steady is the way to go. Keeping a streak going is so important. It will keep you moving upward, not downward, which can be destructive. emoticon

HELLO CHERIE, I hope that you heal soon. But definitely you are going to improve.

I like the view of LYNNWANNABE regarding Ch. 3: to not bite off more than we can chew when it comes to setting up goals.

Donna, you've inspired me! I was feeling so bad because I am too weak to do much of anything lately, but I think I can walk in place with my walker. We have gorgeous weather here, but I stay inside because just getting dressed wears me out for the day. But even in my robe, I can start walking in place with my walker. I know I need to do SOMETHING to build my strength or I'll just lose more ground, but my brain is also a bit foggy since I got home from the hospital and I couldn't think clearly enough to see what I could do. Thanks so much for posting this. I'm anxious now to get started with my walking in place with the walker.

After reading chapter 3 I identified with a lot of it. Exercise is hard, especially now with the snow and not being able to get out, so I have started walking in place with my walker. I started out doing it for 10 minutes 2x/day 4 days a week, then every other time increased the minutes to now I am up to 20 min. I use that time to pray, to pass the time, because I can't watch tv or anything due to physical issues. But it is hard, by the end of 20 min, I am done. My mother gets all these magazines with a new "miracle diet" each week. She is always telling me you need to try this or that... well after a couple of months drinking "miracle tea" mixtures and there being no "miracle" weight loss from them, I am done with them. Now there is one out where you limit your carbs to 20/day.... that is less than an apple!!!!!! I will keep on with my tracking and staying within my limits and trying to figure out what else to try to speed up this process the Sparkpeople way.Stress and sleep are the big ones I need to work on!!!

emoticon LYNNWANNABE. The change that you are planning seems excellent!

After reading the chapter, and knowing about the cornerstones, and how everything is interlocked, I think that your changes will be very motivating to loose weight.

I AM A WORKOUT HATER WANTING TO BECOME A WORKOUT LOVER.

For the first time, after reading chapter 3, I have hope that this miracle can happen. I have been doing 20 minutes walking about 4 days a week. What I have been doing lately, instead of going to the gym and walking on the treadmill, I go to any supermarket or store and walk around the isles to make up the 20 minutes. The reason is that because walking is so boring for me, looking around the items, keeps me distracted.

I think that I will start over with another state of mind. My experiment will be a streak, during 1 month, to do ONLY 10 minutes of exercise in my home. It could be Tai Chi, Line Dancing, Chair dance, etc. I want to see the magic at work.

I think that I have an example that the advise given in Chapter 3 works.

Since I started SP, my changes have been, one at a time:
1) Drink a green smoothie every day
2) Plan and track my weekly menus ahead of time every Friday and
3) Batch cook on Mondays and Tuesday for the whole week

Since Thanksgiving, it has been very hard for me to get back on track. I keep eating more than I suppose to, and consequently I gain and loose 2 #. But those 3 changes are still in my lifestyle, no matter what. They are part of my routine.

OK, the best thing EVER.. I got this email telling me to read chapter 3 and I've got to say, LOVED IT! I am SO thankful too or I would not have read it; I am going to exchange the trips to McDonalds [for my husband] with Chris's idea of nuts and raisins for his drive home from work. (I asked him what he thought and HE loved the idea.)
I also see that MY lack of proper sleep is causing me depression and feelings of lethargic-ness [I have no energy and feel lifeless, sluggish, fatigued]. Sadly, I'm on this cycle of, sleep five hours, up 10; thus, it's finally caught up with me and Chris describes me perfectly.

Sadly, I'm disillusioned with myself and with others right now.. my patience has run thin and I think no-one likes me.. I'm going out to eat worms. emoticon Seriously, though.. this chapter has been the best eye opener.

I also, FINALLY see the key to not biting off more than I can chew when it comes to setting up goals, I liked how he used his brother & himself as examples of starting off slow and working up to something bigger. (Yes, I already gave up going to the gym, we made it 3 times and it cost us a $170 becuz we didn't cancel the auto pay hoping we would go back [ugh]! but.. was thinking instead of forcing myself to do the [what feels impossible] to find what I can "stay" committed too.. so, I was thinking that every morning I should get up and shower, get dressed up, FIX MY HAIR even IF I don't go anywhere. Like Chris said, once I get going.. maybe it will lead me to do other things: like leave the house!) emoticon Yea, I admit it, I've not left the house in 18 days and now I've got cabin fever and boy do I feel like Eore [from Winnie-the-Pooh]. emoticon I NEED TO APPLY A LOT OF HIS [Chris Downie's] IDEA'S INTO MY LIFE [our life]!!! emoticon

We are on Chapter 3 of THE SPARK: What are the 2 biggest things you have learned so far?

I learned that just because I could not do something in the past, doesn't mean I'm not strong enough to do it now.

Small successes lead to bigger successes.

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now.

235 lbs lost without surgery, crazy diets, diet products, or extreme exercise- so have hope!

Chap 3- Focus
Our fore bearers moved a lot more than we do. Our bodies were meant to move and we need to strive for this.
Exercise is a stress reliever and energy recharger. . We all know that there is a lot of stress in our lives now.
Exercise with good food= good body
Proper water intake is very important. I hated water when I was younger. I did not drink water, except when I was very thirsty. I decided in my 50's to push it. Now I crave water!
We need to make small changes that eventually help us control our environment. The body and mind working together is powerful.
Adequate sleep is needed to reach our goals. Sleep heals our bodies. Too little sleep leads to stress, anxiety, and health problems. Health= quality of life.

After reading chapter 1, I think that the MOMENTUM concept lighted a bulb in my mind.

When I started SP, about 10 months ago, my first change was to drink a green smoothie every day for breakfast.

Because it took me forever to wash, cut, and measure fruits and greens to fix the smoothie every single morning, this led me to make other changes like:

- wash, cut, and dry all the produce needed for the smoothies, once a week
- freeze the chunks of fruits, including avocados, avocado seeds, and chunks of ginger
- vacuum seal the greens

When I started, I didn't have a clue about freezing, so I research the methods to do it.

When I saw the advertisements for the vacuum sealers, I always thought that I would NEVER waste money on that. Guess what? After trying to preserve the leafy greens, I ended up vacuum sealing them in mason jars using a Ziploc hand pump. One day, I found a used vacuum sealer in a thrift store. Of course I bought it and love it.

The simple goal that I set for the smoothies brought many other changes. Also, I am saving money because I don't waste food and I am able to buy a lot of produce when is on sale.

While I am making little changes at a time, SP is changing me also a little at a time, The MOMENTUM is working in both ends.

I heard a click when he said how "our success" can lead to other peoples success, I have seen that already in my own life; many times I have thrown the towel in, but with SP all I have to do is start reading other peoples blogs or follow the ones who stuck with it, and it RE-motivates me. I think one of the saddest things is when my Sprakfriends give up on SP, because this IS where we can find the inspiration we need to press through all of our struggles. In fact, watching Beth has helped me to see that if in the future BAD things HAPPEN [like health issues, LIFE, etc.] it doesn't mean I should give up; but, I should continue to make healthy food choices. ..Walk by faith! I guess I would have to say, "her" struggles have strengthened me.. because in the past, I DID GIVE up after needing surgery but watching her, I know we can balance back! emoticon

I am much better at short term goals, while I have set a goal weight and a time frame; I set monthly goals to get to that point. If I show no progress I get discouraged. This month I am hiking 3 times a week, so far my hikes have been from 45 minutes to an hour and 45. This I can do...you notice to weight loss is included, this is a fitness goal as my diet is very healthy.

I find I'm bad at making short and long term goals. I want everything yesterday, even though I understand it can't happen that way. Long term goals are easier for me...because it makes me keep going. Short term goals I'm afraid if I hit them it will be like permission to stop and celebrate the wrong way - so I guess I am scared of them.

Chap. 2- Focus
Short term and long term goals and our values need to "jive". When you set your goals, you have a reference point. Your goals need to be something you want. You need to do it for yourself, not others. The goals need to be realistic and achievable. You didn't gain the weight overnight, and you can't lose it overnight. Writing them down helps. Stating them in a positive light is imperative. Don't be negative.Identify your values. Imagery is important. Be optimistic, because optimists tend to be healthier and happier. Your energy will help you reach your goals

Got both books, The Spark & The Spark Solution as early Christmas gifts so am going to have to get reading in the orange book soon. Have two questions:

How does our week run for reading the chapter? Sun-Sat? Mon-Fri? ????

When do we begin posting about it?

I've never done a book club type thing before so am don't want to "Put the cart before the horse" so to speak.

Have been wanting both books for a while so am glad to have them.
