Lately, many people I've talked to are on the Paleo plan. It is very cavman-esque. Meat, sprouted foods, fruits, veggies...

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now.

230 lbs lost without surgery, crazy diets, diet products, or extreme exercise- so have hope!

I believe in all foods in moderation also but I'm trying to 'give up' sugar for a couple of reasons; it makes me crave more sweet stuff and it is also contributing to some of my health problems. I'm realistic to know I can't be totally sugar-free but I just don't use sugar anymore, I use Stevia in my hot drinks and am also cutting back on that.

I think we each find what works for us and if we stick with it, we'll be healthier and yes, slimmer!

Well said and really so simple. It is not rocket science. Thank you!

The American Diabetes Association sells them on their website. I bought one but I don't use it that often. It's just as easy to use those chinet divided plates.

I also like the portion plate method.

I was in Indy. for the week-end! Thought about calling you, but, with much to do, ran out of time!

Janet

Do you know where the plates that are section can be bought?

Thanks for the great ideas! For me, the things I must avoid are:
- phytoestrogens in soy oil (they make me VERY depressed, as do synthetic estrogens)
- dairy (it slows down my weight loss, so I get calcium from other sources)
- starches (they make me tired and cause me to crave caffeine, which isn't good for me due to past adrenal fatigue)
-caffeine (because it makes me crave extra carbohydrates)

I only know those things from making my meals organic and from scratch following cancer treatment, and using a food journal to track everything. Inevitably, if I'm not tracking, my body will naturally try to eat enough calories to maintain homeostasis.

My basic plan involves portion control and does not exclude any food item.

Avoiding foods that contain the following really does work. I have never seen it more simply explained and this is basically what I've followed. I do not eliminate these foods, but I do eat less of them:

Carbonated sodas
Refined sugars and flours
Artificial anything
Processed foods

I add whole foods like fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, healthy fats, organic dairy... . I eat the good stuff first ALWAYS and that leaves less room for junk later. I do avoid, not eliminate high fructose corn syrup because it causes cravings for me as do the ingredients listed above.

I usually go by the plate method of eating where you divide your plate in sections of 4. 1/4 is protein, 1/4 is grain or starch, 1/4 is fruit, 1/4 is veggie, Then I add organic dairy.

I track everything I eat and try to stay within the SparkPeople guidelines given to me.

For beginners, just tracking at all is a start. Cutting back a little, ordering a size down, eating from a smaller plate to try to adjust to a smaller serving... those things can help.
