I crochet at times. I made an afghan for a queen size bed. Next is Granny Square slippers for all of the girls in the family for next Christmas.

I have always wanted to learn to knit. My crochet skills are limit to single and double crochet.

One of my planned non-food goal rewards is knitting lessons,

I have not tried the essential oils. Beth how do you use?

That's Guided Imagery.

I learnt doing it while classes to become associated with HOSPICE VOLUNTEERING.

I don't know why it wouldn't work with eating.

I can believe that about reading recipes, StarBrite.
I've read studies to the effect that thinking about eating a food can head off a craving for it.
E.g., subjects who imagined eating M&M's before being given them to eat ate fewer than people who hadn't done the imagining first.

So I've tried fantasizing or reminiscing about eating a luscious dessert. The theory is it should be satisfying, not whip up the craving. (I DIDN'T do it in the kitchen or a restaurant.) Seemed to work for me, at least caused no harm.

Glad to hear essential oils help. Have lost my sense of smell, so that doesn't do it for me. Hard to believe, but reading recipes of the foods I want most sometimes does the trick for me. I guess it's a matter of getting our other senses in high gear?

I just make the broth according to taste, but the Knorr package has the amount listed on the label. I think it's a rounded teaspoon to a cup of water. Like I said, though, I just through it in and then add more water if it's a bit too strong.

Janet, I will answer many of your questions in a private message, so I'm not taking too much space here.

As for the questions about the broth:

1. I meant powdered broth, which I get out of a humungous bottle of Knorr stock mix from Costco. You can get the teeny bottles in any supermarket.

2. another source of powdered stock or broth is available by the scoop at a place here in Utah by the name of Kitchen Kneads, where all the various grains, beans, and nuts are available from huge sacks that we can scoop out in smallaer quantities. they also have lots of candy supplies and kitchen equipment. It generally caters to big family cooks, which I'm not. (Old maid, no kids, never married.) I go there, though, because they have all kinds of choices in grains, etc. years ago I found quinoa there before anybody else knew about it.

3. When,m I'm really lazy, I use the prepared broth (Kirkland) that I get at Costco.

4. I don't go to health food stores, because I feel really uncomfortable there, and because they're really expensive. emoticon

5. Never lived on a farm, although my Grandpa was president of the Utah Farm Bureau in the 1920s during the Dpression. I have only been on farms for an hour or two at any one time, and feel very embarrassed when I know so little about farms when I'm visiting distant cousins in idaho.

What the heck, I'm going to finish here, rather than in an email, because, well, I'm lazy.

6. I, too, come from hardy stock. My Dad was 88 when he passed away. My Mom died two years ago at 99. She was only a few monhths shy of her 100th birthday, but it was never a big thing to her, or us, actually. She had a good mind to the very end, but she had lost four of her five senses: taste, touch, smell, and worst of all, her sight. Her last three+ years were spent in total darkness. Very hard on her, because she had been so active.

Thanks for your email. Mine is Starrbrite201@hotmail.com.

Starr

We get the rotisserie chickens from the grocery store, have a meal or two from it, then boil the carcass with celery, onions and carrots, maybe adding some Chicken Soup Base (like a bouillon but less salt) to make chicken soup. We get a couple more meals out of the soup. (For 3 people.)

It would be "better" to make from a raw chicken, but this is quick and easy.

You can also buy beef bones and roast them in the oven (for flavor) before boiling with vegetables for a beef stock/broth. This is how the French begin making their onion soup, so recipes should be readily available.

To your health!

I'm older than you! I will be 76 this August! I plan on living until 100yrs.. two of my aunts lived up into their 90s.

I have always lived in the same county in Ohio. Just west of Dayton, Ohio in Preble Co..

Where do you get that powdered stuff? Health food store or where?

Did you live on a farm?

My email address is smidsmom@gmail.com maybe we exchange other old-time recipes? You think?

What amounts do you generally use in your broth.

Yes. We used to make bone broth when I was a child, and we HAD too, because we couldn't afford anything else. It is good, as all broth is, in my opinion.

I would love bone broth, but I am too old and too spoiled to make it (or buy at high prices.)

As for the broth that I love, it basically includes many of the flavorings used in Asian broths, i think. I don't measure any ingredients, anymore. Generally, I open up a container of broth,or throw a handful of powdered broth, or spoon in Better than Bouillon mix and stir it into water. I also pour in some vinegar (I sometimes put in too much and therefore, have to increase batch of broth emoticon ).

When I take the time, I add a bit of garlic powder, some low-sodium soy, and a bit of ginger. (Very unrespectful when it comes to good cooking.)

Most of the time, though, I stick to some type of broth and vinegar. My mom used to add lemon instead of the vinegar, but the vinegar tends to give me more spunk. emoticon

There's a bottle of amino acid (much like soy sauce, I think) that I love to add (only a drop or two).

Don't get discouraged if it doesn't do as much for you as it does for me. (I have very strange tastes, especially when I'm working so hard to control foods and appetites and calories and emotions.)

Please let me know if you like it, hate it, or can live with or without. I would love to find someone else who loves broth (any broth) as much as I do.

Have to stop now, because I'm very hungry and I have to go get some broth!

Tell me more about this broth! The kind, flavor, how much and how much vinegar.

I have been thinking about making some bone broth. Ever heard of it? Its an old x recipe my grandmother's made. I remember my Mom taking turkey circus home after Thanksgiving dinner to make broth.

Can anyone tell me more about this?

Broth is my life saver. When I am starving a wonderful cup of broth, with a bit of vinegar, absolutely settles me down.

Water helps sometimes, but I tend to not want to reach for it, as I do broth. I realize broth has a lot fo salt, but I'm trading one bad thing instead of lots more calories.

I have a friend that has told me that the thre reason I'm always so hungry after water aerobics is because I need water. That's true, and i do find water satisfying then. Lots of water.

I also have other stuff to eat: sugar free Jello, steamed vegetables, grilled or midrowaved sweet peppers.

Today I was walking around the kitchen looking for something to munch on after I ate lunch.

I'm on Day 9 of the 21 Day Tame The Sweet Tooth Challenge, and trust me, as a former sweets binge eater, it's been tough breaking the habit. Besides quitting sugars I don't want to add extra food to my daily plan sooooo I decided to have 16 oz of cold water. It worked this time. My former self wold have reached for something extra sweet like candy. I need SparkPeople so much to keep myself from going overboard.

Have a successful, sugar free day! emoticon
