I've been going so slow these past three years. I think in part my motivation is really low. I need to do what I did before and just put one foot in front of the other.

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now.

230 lbs lost without surgery, crazy diets, diet products, or extreme exercise- so have hope!

I took a leisure day yesterday.

I did the normal required daily activities.....
Dishes emoticon , cooking emoticon , and more dishes emoticon .

I at one point nursed the thought that I should be feeling ashamed that I was not moving more but then I remember that we are suppose to have a day of rest.

I am 1.7 pounds away from TWOterville and I'm ok with that! emoticon

Have a super enjoyable day today my friends..... you deserve it! emoticon

In a way this makes me sad.

Yes, I have dropped 27 pounds as of this week and I am very happy about that, it would have been more if I could count what I have lost and then regained, but I feel ashamed that this is all I have accomplished since I started tracking in Jan. 2011

An attitude of "whatever is convenient" won't accomplish very much. An attitude of "whatever it takes" is impossible to stop.

I put a pic on my SPage of me at the opening reception in front of my paintings.

I updated my profile pic to a recent one for a reason.... to be recognizable because I'm having a SparkMeet this weekend with a couple of SparkFriends from around the country. One is coming here from 2000 miles away because her brother (also a Sparker) is running in the Boston Marathon.

Good.
My DH, son & I are finally healthy after over a month of illness. Thank you God!

I entered 3 paintings in a show at gallery I've never even been in before, and all 3 were accepted!
I follow them on Facebook, which I only look at sporadically. I happened to click on an old email that the gallery had posted something on FB and it was a call for entries, the deadline was that day and this was 10:30 p.m. So I quickly emailed in the application form and jpegs of the 3 paintings I chose to fir the theme.

It is a beautiful Spring day. My eyes opened this morning. My feet and legs are allowing me to move. I have accomplished several of my chores for the day. My loved ones are safe and relatively healthy. I have read some motivational blogs and articles and strengthened my desire for improved health.
My scale may show higher numbers than I want it to, but I feel incredibly blessed.
I hope the same is true for all of you!

Brilliant, Beth.
Why emotional eating? Because we are emotionally damaged and hurting.

Reminds me of one of my favorite sayings:

I like the analogy of the voice as a child because like a child my voice will lie, bargain, and pitch an all out tantrum. Ignoring it just makes it louder and more persistent. But talking to it and keeping it in its boundaries is important to help keep me moving forward even if it is slow and clumsily like those beautiful sea turtles.

The only way we can fail is to give up. Never surrender!

I call that inner voice that is my old negative self that wants to eat in unhealthy ways " my inner fat girl." She reminds me that I need to take good care of her because really, she is an emotionally damaged child. So I forgive her like one and self talk her that same way now. "Of course you want more, it's delicious! But let's save some for later and have some fruit for now if your REALLY still hungry. Are you?"

Pam,

I agree that I am not fond of the name although I have never used negative names on myself. I dealt with verbal abuse from others in my past. Part of the issues that contributed to my weight gain. While I have had a lot of negative and insecure thoughts about myself, I finally found my voice once again. I won't tolerate name-calling from anyone especially myself. Took a lot of soul searching and time. And I hope you find that place too. Believe me, if I can you can too.
So let's come up with a better name. Something like The Villain? Cruella de Ville? The Bad Influence? The Off-key One-hit Wonder? Broken Record? Static? Nasty Nellie?

The only way we can fail is to give up. Never surrender!

Debbie, I'm having a hard time getting motivated again too. I'm not giving up either, but I'm struggling. Dealing with a lot of work stress isn't helping...

PEAJAY, I like the idea of naming that little voice. I dunno if "Pig" is the right name for my little voice. I call myself "Pig," "Fat Cow," and "Whale," and the self-hatred that resonates through my body (especially with "Pig") with those names doesn't seem to help me achieve my goals. Maybe something like... "Nay-Say," "Sister-In-Law," or "Dad?"

Debbie, you SO deserve improved health.
I know this sounds silly but it is working. I am reading a book that names that little voice we have that says why bother? Or just a box of cookies won't hurt---they are your favorites. Or you have so much to lose and you failed before, ...... That ugly little voice. The author names that voice (but not us) The Pig.
It is so empowering to be able to tell that voice, Shut up Pig!,!! I can do this and you just leave me alone.

Thank you IndyGirl for writing your blog about being on a 3 year plateau and for posting it here as well. It made a huge difference to me as I was starting to slip into poor me thinking. I've been diligent about tracking and keep my calories in less than calories out so it was hard not to see the scales move for a month.
Finally, when I weighed this week and was 2 pounds down. I know that this is probably small potatoes compared to what you went through those 3 years, but your blog resonated deeply with me and pulled me from that slipping into that negative vortex (like water down the drain) of negative thinking that kills motivation.

Yes, I started on 40 mg of Prednisone for bronchitis/asthma and another antibiotic.
The quick Prednisone taper and 1st antibiotic didn't help my breating/cough.

So far today I'm doing well with my eating. But last night I had a bowl of cereal late night. I hadn't had a late night snack or cold cereal since the last time I was on Prednisone.

Could be worse, though, last Easter-time I had to be hospitalized for asthma and put on 100's of mg of steroids, so just hoping to get better on 10's of mgs.

Be well, all.

It's just a daily grind. Some days are much easier than others, aren't they? Like yesterday, I could have eaten everything I saw. I managed to only go over by 200cal. Today I feel stronger, more in control.

DON'T ever give up. I just came off of a 3 year medically induced plateau. Talk about discouraging. I had even gained back 30 pounds of what I lost. I've lost 15 of that now and the pounds are coming off again. I never gave up in those three years and that's why I never gained it all back. Remember: Lose, maintain, just don't gain. And above all, NEVER EVER GIVE UP.

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now.

Thank you Beth for your amazing power of example! I saw a post of a series of your photos the first day I was on SP and you are one of the most generous and inspiring people I have ever known. And I feel like I do know you, because you are so giving and accessible here on SP.

I also use only diet, exercise, tracking, knowledge and social support and have lost and kept off 50 lbs. for 6 years, including 2 lbs. of fat in the past month (to bring me back to the 50 lb. tally.)

NON-SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS PROCEDURE
That said, at my medical weight loss doctor's office today, where I check in and get weighted on their scale which tells how much of one's weight is fat, water and other (bone, muscle, etc.) There was new info on an out-patient, non-surgical procedure called RE-SHAPE. It is a trademark of Re-Shape Medical, Inc.

I am posting this info at no benefit to myself, and I have no plan to use it, just as a kindness to team members who might benefit from it. This might offer some similar benefits to weight loss surgery without permanently (or really even temporarily) altering your body.

It involves:
1.) evaluation and education about the procedure.
2.) They endoscopically place two, connected balloons in the stomach and fill them with saline solution. The balloons reduce hunger and help you feel full with smaller portions. Personalized coaching helps you focus on healthy eating, exercise and habits. After 6 months the balloons are removed.
3.) After the balloons are removed you receive 6 more months of the personalized coaching to help you maintain your healthy lifestyle and weight loss.

Weight loss takes more than calories in and out. If we could manage the exchange of a calorie deficit, we would all be thin. It takes a mental makeover, a realization that our relationship with food and movement isn't right at first. Then it takes some time to do the prep work of getting a proper kitchen together where you can weigh and measure, store food properly, have healthy foods available at all times... And proper equipment suited to your exercise needs. Can't use your legs? Try an arm bike. Chair exercise. Is a gym more your thing? Start thinking about the lifestyle you want to build for yourself, not the diet and exercise torture venture you want to go on. Prepare for sustainable changes. More to come...

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now.

JANIS ..... I am so sorry your facing more doctor appointments....

INDYGIRL ..... Beth, I hope your side starts feeling better!

Momma has had a big set back this last week. She started to really slip in her dementia and has now been placed in lockdown after she tried to leave the parking lot at her home 4 times last Tuesday. I also just got DH out of the hospital with pneumonia. He is on the road to feeling better but still very weak.
I pray that the 4 day's trying to eat correctly at the hospital doesn't end in a gain this week.....

Had my physical. Doc sent me for x-rays of left shoulder and knee, right hip and ankle. Seems the L knee, which is a replacement, has fluid on it. I have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon who did my knee replacement.

I also have an appointment with another orthopedist to look at the shoulder injury. She's an upper extremity specialist, he's a lower. I had a surgical rotator cuff repair (2 actually) when I first got RA, so I don't know if that will complicate this. Hope just PT will straighten it out.

I made it to the pool at the Y today. It has been a pathetically long time since I've been there; it felt good. (I have been in some other pools.) Did deep water jogging with foam Aqua Jogger belt on, also ab work ("suntan/superman" etc.)

I have my physical tomorrow. I have to tell my doc about my left shoulder, which I injured at Thanksgiving. I'll see if I also mention my left knee which hurts and gets swollen, right ankle which has sharp pain often when I walk (know that foot has bone-on-bone arthritis), or the right hip which wakes me at night with pain.
These are in addition to my Rheumatoid Arthritis and TMJ that causes jaw and face pain, headaches and migraines.

My DH and I are planning to go on a pilgrimage trip to Lourdes and Spain in a couple of months, so I want to be able to walk around a fair amount without, say, my knee blowing up. I am working on doing more cardio to get ready.

We need to race! Unfortunately you would probably win emoticon

20 minutes peddling away yesterday. I slowed down and just relaxed while I watched TV. I would have done more if I hadn't made plans to pick up my grandchildren at school. Today I will try to accomplish at least the same 20. I wanted to get use to that much at least on my legs for a week or two and my arms of an evening while I am watching some of my favorite shows,,,,,,

I worked out for 12 minutes with it on the floor, peddling away with my feet. I actually over did my first day in speed and today I plan to slow it down and try to last a little longer. I completed 10 minutes with my arms while I watched TV. Again I over stretched myself in my eagerness to accomplish something, anything, for the first time in a very LONG time.
My body was telling me (STOP IT you crazy lady!) and today will be a lesson in patience and strategy.

Coach Beth researched the calorie burn on the arm cycle and it is averaging about 5-6 calories per minute depending on the intensity of your peddling. There is no confirmation that is 100% but that's about as close as can be figured at this time. I would be glad if they could do the estimation and add it to exercise lists with regular stationary bikes....

Working on losing my holiday weight gain. I'm getting there but it's a struggle. I'm fighting emotional eating from work overload and surprise expenses. I just want to numb everything away with food. But I'm winning more battles than I'm losing!

Oh yeah.
I had both knees replaced at age 51.
I've had Rheumatoid Arthritis for the past 7 years or so... it started with my shoulders getting so inflammed that my bones cut through my rotator cuffs and I needed 2 surgeries.
I have bone-on-bone arthritis on my right foot and ankle.
I have arthritis in my neck.
All of 2015 I have had TMJ pain from clenching my teeth at night. I broke 2 teeth and needed crowns on them.
The TMJ also caused migraines almost every day of 2015.

I think this would be a good group for me to join, as I doubt I will be losing as fast as I would like! Chronic pain and very low energy levels are what I currently contend with. At the moment, 10 minutes a day, a few days a week will probably be all I can do. We should be moving in 3 months time, and aim to get closer to the aquatic center down here, which would be a big help! I can currently exercise for 5 - 10 minutes out of the water. In it? I can go for an hour or more.

Here's to a good year!

Never give up; never stop trying.

My Dad's birthday was Dec. 18, one week before Christmas. We lost him in Sept., 18 years ago, 5 days before my adopted son was born.
I now have a Mass said for Dad on his birthday. (I'm Catholic.) My brother usually comes and we have coffee afterward. I do the same for the sister I lost 13 years ago too.

Oh how I wish I could make myself do things the way you have Beth..... I try and then I stop. Story of my life but still I keep trying!

We took mom a Christmas Dinner last night and she was so very happy. She sure loves her pumpkin pie. emoticon I dropped off 4 slices Friday evening and when we showed up last night they were all gone. Now picture the fact that she weights about 117 pounds and is a very tiny little 93 year old mommy..... I just laughed and laughed when I asked,
"mom did you eat all the pie and she said I SURE DID!"

We showed up at our daughters house at 6am on Christmas morning to sing happy birthday to Jesus (their tradition every year before anyone opens anything), eat Christmas breakfast, and have a little grandchildren's hugs. I love watching them get excited over their gifts.
Today we head to the oldest daughters for their Christmas Celebration and the sweet 16 birthday of two of our grand daughters.... emoticon

Stay safe today my friends, more storms rolling through ahead of the winter weather gets here. emoticon

Not much to say today, recovering from a low and a fight with apendegitis- inflammation by the colon, very painful. Not to be confused with appendicitis. Lately I've been being very stupid and eating sugar on my cereal, which CAUSES CRAVINGS FOR SUGAR!!!! Being a health and wellness/ weight loss coach, I should know better, and I do! But, I still fall victim to the crazies like everyone else. Today was not my last bowl of sugar ridden cereal, it never is your last anything unless you're planning on dying. Let's ask ourselves how many LAST things we've had in preparation for a DIET. It never is the last... and the deprivation thing is the WORST feeling! So just say "No!" to lasts.

Say "Yes!" to lifestyle change! Changing little things one at a time and making them part of your life really does work. You have to make the changes no-brainers, not tough ones. Like, I will continue to eat cereal, I will just use stevia to sweeten it and not sugar. I'll eat fruit with it for a boost of healthy natural sugar to combat cravings and protein to make it last.

What can you do to solve your 1 issue?

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now.

Bright, shiny, and chilly here in Texas....

I am down almost two pounds this week. I almost tripled my daily steps yesterday at the tune of 3800 and a little over 1.4 miles. I know that seems like such a small amount to many of you but believe me, I was in so much pain last night driving home that I was actually on the verge of tears but I do feel energized this morning.

It's going to be another busy day again today. A lot of steps, more driving and being with so many people that I hold dear to my heart ....

Be careful and know that your never alone in your walk!

God is good!

The plan is succeeding so far this week! I am back down from the five pound gain of last weeks and now I'm pushing through and looking for a further loss.

I do know that I feel so very much better now then I did on Saturday morning

Sandra & Jeanne ..... PLEASE get better soon my friends!

I woke this morning swollen.....

The first thing I noticed was my hand was asleep, my rings were to tight, and then I noticed my stomach and mid-section was extended... A LOT.

So after feeling sorry for myself and crying on the phone with my friend and diet coach, we talked things over and as suggested and discussed, I am off the glutens, salt, and sugars. To many of the foods I have consumed over the holidays were loaded with salt, sugar, and glutens and my body is really paying the price.

I have got to get a hand on the cravings and when I get away from those three evils, I lose the all consuming hungers that set me in a tail spin.

I thank the good Lord for sending me such an amazing coach and friend like INDYGIRL!

I am financially crippled during the holiday's so I am sewing dresses for three of my granddaughters and a vest for their brother for Christmas Day pictures. I also have some fleece to make into warm and cozy pajama pants.....

It's a cold and rainy day here in Texas.
One of our storage buildings was broken into this last week. Nothing in there really worth much but they sure made a mess and a lot of work for us today while it's cold and rainy. funny thing is, he left his box cutter behind and the officer bagged it up to finger print......

I didn't lose weight this Thanksgiving and I am amazed the damage wasn't worse.
Time to do some of that deep soul searching I have been avoiding lately but not so deep that I scar..... emoticon

I'm not doing the BEST on our challenges, but I am trying, that's the point. Keep trying, because you never know when that try is your home run! It isn't that I'm struggling with holiday eating, I'm struggling with pain and stress. They keep me from wanting to move and make me want to nibble. My usual stress busters aren't working any more. I need to research new ones. That takes time to figure out.

Jeanne -- Hope you get well soon from the pneumonia. That is no picnic.

My DH is no longer on the Niacin because he couldn't handle the side effects. He is just using diet and exercise for cholesterol.

Debbie and Howard -- I have a couple of cups coffee with skim milk through the a.m. and sip 2 mugs of decaf tea with skim milk and honey in the evening. It seems like that small amount of calories and protein keeps me from needing to snack. (I put 1/4 - 1/3 cup of skim milk in a mug, and track it.)
When I was in WW they used to recommend Diet cocoa... 25 calories. The liquids are filling.

IAMSUNNYHOWARD ..... I am so glad the ideas helped you out! I know it seems to help me survive the evening munchies. I am so very afraid of statins. I was on one at an earlier time in my life and they recalled it because it was killing people. I had damage done to my tendons and nerves and I do not EVER want to live through that again emoticon

Debbie- thank you for the advice on the 2pm shake. Even though I eat a decent lunch around 12, I have the 2pm slumpies also. I have both chocolate and vanilla shakes, and some PB2 powder. So I am getting creative and so much more satisfied. Thank you!!

Glad you are doing alternatives to statins ? Hope it works for you. Are you tracking your nutrients? I do the cholesterol, sodium, saturated fats, vitamin c, calcium. Then I run the reports through my dietician and she adjusts my plan as needed.

The oatmeal idea is great! Will try that too.

THERESA ..... Times like that make me glad I no longer have a yard with trees!

RICHILA ..... I added back in the snack shake with the added Fiber Powder to my 2 pm snack and it sure cuts the snacking down and the cravings as well. I fight a drop in sugar levels about that time and it sets me up for late evening binging if I don't do the 8 oz. diabetic shake with the added powder.

JEANNE! ..... I am so glad you are on the road to recovery and so sorry you have been so sick! I know I have missed you being here.......

I made the decision to hold off on the statin and see what happens with the added Metamucil and activities. The added early afternoon shake at around 2pm with the powder helps with the hunger binges in the evenings so far......

Niacin has just been linked to heart attacks in the high doses to correct cholesterol. Look it up please!!

Sorry I haven't been here. I have pneumonia and this morning (2 am) is the first time I haven't been weak as a kitten. I don't do well with pneumonia and it really takes it out of me. We caught it early this time thank God but it still wears me out to do anything. I had to wait 3 days until the meds worked enough to take a shower - yuck! - but I just couldn't breathe good enough to do it!!

When I was at the doctor on Saturday, It showed a loss of about 5 pounds but I don't know if that will last so I'm waiting to weigh on my scale until I get to feeling better. I had been scared to weigh but I did a couple of days before I got really sick and I had actually dropped a pound. I surprised me so much that I triple checked it!

I am on a statin and it doesn't seem to affect anything but my cholesterol. I am genetically indisposed to high cholesterol so no matter how well I eat, it will happen. The statin keeps it under control. I agree though to go through all the warnings and pay attention to what happens to your body when you take it.

We never do Halloween candy. We don't get many trick or treaters and it's not good for either DH or me to have that candy around!

I have missed ya'll. I'm all caught up on posts for now!

My DH can't take statins, so for a while his doc prescribed Niacin (a B vitamin.) The main side effect is that it causes capillary dilation, so his skin was red and hot for a while. For that reason he would take it right before bed so he wouldn't mind it as much, and under the blankets so the heat loss wouldn't affect him.

It's sort of a natural cholesterol control. (Natural in that it occurs in foods, but this is a higher dose.)

Debbie, read all of the side effects and monitor your body carefully. I have a lot of allergies and discovered that I am super sensitive to Statins. Low levels make me achy, high levels cause me so much pain that I cry in my sleep. I've upped my soluble fiber, increased my exercise and dropped my red meat intake. As a Texan, that last one was the hardest. I get blood work done again next week.

At the bottom of the SP Nutrition Tracker, down by the Water Counter, there is a link to see your Daily Feedback Report. I always click it... I admit I started because they give you 2 SPoints for looking at it. Well, I find it helpful to look at those graphs for each nutrient for the past week.

But, what I want to say is: You can also track OTHER NUTRIENTS automatically on SP! So I have it track Cholesterol, Saturated Fat, Trans Fat, Fiber and Calcium. You put your foods in as usual and when you look at the Daily Feedback it will tell you how much cholesterol or whatever you have had that day.
Genius, right? Makes it easier to see when you are really eating right. emoticon

Debbie,

My doctor told me to take cholesterol meds 10 years ago. I told him my oatmeal story about having a total cholesterol of 135 when I weighed around 225 (oh, to weigh that little again), way back when no one thought oatmeal had any healthy properties--I just ate oatmeal and added oat bran because I wanted to cut the over-sweet flavor and have a breakfast that lasted until lunch. He was unimpressed, said oatmeal had nothing to do with it, and prescribed the meds. I took them for 6 months (yuck), but I also started up again eating a packet of instant oatmeal with 1/4 -1/3 cup of oat bran cereal every morning--4-5 grams of soluble oat fiber every day. I didn't make any other diet or exercise changes.

Six months later, I was rechecked and my total cholesterol had dropped 90 points: from 240 to 150! He was amazed that the meds had had such an effect. I told him the oatmeal helped; he refused to believe me. I switched doctors and quit the cholesterol meds but kept up the oatmeal & oat bran.

Since then I've gained more weight and had my total cholesterol go as high as 195 (still eating oatmeal+bran). My total cholesterol now is 173, and my current doctor said keep up the oatmeal and just add some exercise to boost the good cholesterol a bit.

I realize I am NOT genetically predisposed to high cholesterol and everyone is different--so maybe most people WON'T experience the level of success I do. However, I wanted to share my story to encourage you and others to give oatmeal/oat bran a try (If you aren't already) to see if it helps. I DID take the meds my doctor recommended, but, my new doctor found the meds weren't needed if I kept up my oatmeal/bran plan. AND I DEFINITELY DO!

I agree that starting low cholesterol meds isn't that great. I was on a statin ,which contributed to the muscle loss and weakening in my legs. Be sure to monitor what is happening with you.

My Dr at Mayo prescribed Zetia, which is cholesterol lowering, but not a statin. I am doing fine with that. Of course I am tracking my food and making sure my cholesterol intake is not over 300, and I am exercising more- can't wait to see my next numbers.

Good luck and keep on keeping on!

I just got an email from her and she wants to start me on cholesterol meds. I have to go by the office for trial supplies tomorrow morning and I have fought so hard to prevent that from happening.
ACTUALLY I really haven't worked hard enough and THATS why I am having to do this!

Sooooo ..........

I re-started my meal plan again this morning and believe it or not, one of the changes was that I added a salad into my morning meal emoticon

I just decided to think outside the box and start doing things the way I am suppose to instead of crying in my pillow every night about how unfair my life is compared to others. I want a change and ( I ) am the only person that can make that happen! emoticon

Have an amazing Sunday today my friends! God Bless....... emoticon

Bee, one tip... if you had the same breakfast as a recent day, you can go to back to that day and click on "Copy Foods" then select the meal and date you want to copy it to, and with one click you can copy all the foods in a meal. Hope that speeds things up a bit for you.
