Pat,

Have you tried Sensodyne toothpaste? It is especially formulated for sensitive mouths.

Thank you, it was a couple of years ago now, I usually brush my teeth when I get out of the shower, and one morning before going to work(cleaning offices) I was brushing my teeth & thought" this is dumb, I brush my teeth before I eat my breakfast", so I purchased a travel toothbrush that comes with a sm.package of toothpaste and put it in my breakfast bag, along with the sm Dental floss that the Dental Hygienist gives me. Now I brush after I eat at work.

Nora,

These r great ideas. I am sorry you have so much to deal with.

A few ideas...
- toothbrush can be modified for you to have a better grip (fatter handles are easier to hold and can be done with an inexpensive plastic brush from the store)
- with your heavy plaque and calculus, i wonder if you have dry mouth? Biotene products are great for dry mouth problems.
- ultrasonic jewelry cleaners are similar to what dental offices use to clean dentures/partials. Perhaps you could see about getting one (hopefully used and inexpensive) to use at home. Put your denture in a ziploc bag then into the cleaner.
- best over the counter mouth rinse is listerine an even the generic form. They also make an alcohol free version if you do have dry mouth. 2x a day would be very helpful.

That is a great idea. -A check list.

I was in an accident about 8 years old. A boy ran in to me and broke my adult teeth three of them and I swallowed them' I am 73 now and so I have along history of tooth problems. I do not cold water only warm water.

It is very difficult when you have arthritic hands, Will any solution that will clean better gums and teeth.
I have a hard time flossing.
I have a dental plan that allows me to have three cleaning in the year.
I get serious plaque and my hygienist has hard time scraping the solids that stay on my teeth. Any suggestion on that.
Those same solids get on to my upper and lower partials. I have to scrape it off the wiring and the bridges. Maybe there is some mouthwash but they are not very useful to me.

I am type two and there was not much about the tooth problems way back then. I have not had much information from the Dr about teeth issues. I often wonder when we have issues as we age the Dentist should be told from the Dr. What meds and illnesses we have.
Just drop a note if it is important.
I hope it helps and thanks for asking. Pat in Maine. emoticon

PS I saw the list but it disappeared after I posted my questions. It was Blue

Thank you for your quick reply!

There are several checklists out there, but this one is from the American Dental Assoc:

Your Diabetes Dental Health Action Plan

Teamwork involving self-care and professional care from your dentist will be beneficial in keeping your healthy smile as well as potentially slowing progression of diabetes. Here are five oral health-related things you can do to for optimal wellness:

___Control your blood sugar levels. Use your diabetes-related medications as directed, changing to a healthier diet and even exercising more can help. Good blood sugar control will also help your body fight any bacterial or fungal infections in your mouth and help relieve dry mouth caused by diabetes.

___ Avoid smoking.

___ If you wear any type of denture, clean it each day.

___ Make sure to brush twice a day with a soft brush and floss correctly daily.

___ See your dentist for regular checkups.

This is from NDEP (National Diabetes Education Program):

Visit my dental provider at least once a year for a full mouth exam.
Learn the best way to brush my teeth and use dental floss.
Ask about the early signs of tooth, mouth, and gum problems.
Ask about the link between diabetes and gum disease.

There is ALOT of reference material out there online on this topic. I am sifting through a great deal to come up with a concise, helpful article for people with diabetes. Let me know what else you would be interested in learning more about. I will provide it here as well as include it in my article, as space permits of course.

Hello Team!

I am writing an article about oral health and diabetes and am wondering what people need to know and want to know about oral health as it relates to diabetes.

Since I am a periodontist, I know quite a bit about this area and am getting really excited about this article I hope to get published in Diabetes Forecast.

I will make NO money from this article but your input would help me greatly as I need to know what people think about the topic and what the article needs to include to be more effective.

Thanks in advance,

Gumdoctor
