It's hard to get exercise right now. We got 3 feet of snow from the storm over the weekend and the temps have been way to cold for me to walk outside. Im scared to go for surgery too so I figure it would be better if I got my weight down more and get better control of BP and BG.

Kathy, do you have to cut the protein amount due to the kidney problem? I am having a heck of a time trying to figure out what I can eat. So far my kidney amounts are only one slightly high and they figure that is mainly because I am always dehydrated. I just cannot drink enough. When I do drink my stomach hurts. I got results of my ultrasound yesterday and when she ordered more blood tests she put kidney insufficiency down. I also have inflamed pancreas so I think that means lower fat. Need lower carbs for the diabetes. That leaves veggies and the fiber from them, but that triggers IBS. Can I still eat the proteins?

Trish, I am like you, trying to lose more of the weight before I have to have surgery for what they found with the ultrasound. I am starting to get Cassie out for walks as much as I can I'm not much for walking out there in the snow, but might end up doing that. At least we aren't getting it like back east. Trying to remember a couple supplements, one for anti-inflammatory and one for heart health. I am scared to go for surgery at this point cause my blood pressure keeps going up and down.

I agree with you that experimentation is probably the best way to go. I have tried a few of the recipes in a paleo cookbook that I normally wouldn't have made. Some of the meals were better than others. I'm also considering going gluten free. I haven't been eating very well lately though. I was more strict with myself during Christmas than after. I really need to lose more weight too. I've lost 17 pounds but need to continue to lose as I will probably be having surgery this summer. Glucose levels need to be controlled along with my blood pressure. I'm trying not to be discouraged but I'm not being very successful.

I have a hard time with this too... particularly because I'm on a renal diet, not a diabetic diet. The two are not very compatible! LOL
My diet to protect my kidney function is marginally more important... but it's caused by the diabetes, so that needs to be addressed too. It becomes a real juggling act just writing up a menu!

For me, the best way to find what works has always been careful experimentation. Try it in little bits, and see how it works for YOU, because we are all unique.

"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." thanks, Walter P. Chrysler. I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!
P.S. I looked up enthusiasm, and it says the root words mean God within... interesting...!

Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steady, like a heartbeat... and that works too! LOL

I have looked into it, but just can't eliminate all grains and all dairy. I am supposed to eliminate all grains unless once in a while I have whole grain, but having trouble with that. Dairy isn't one that I have on my "eliminate" list, thankfully because right now I am having milk to help my stomach feel better. The list my doctor gave me is actually more like the Grain Brain would give you.

I have a friend who has been doing Paleo, but she doesn't stay with it all the time. I met her for lunch one time and she ate a burger or something on a bun. Of course, she doesn't need to lose weight and doesn't have health problems like I do.

We are on a modified paleo diet. My mother needs this to reduce inflammation. For the most part paleo is no grains and no dairy. Preferable use organic or grass fed produce. We don't do that as too expensive. We do very little in the way of starchy vegetables and no grains at all. Do use some dairy but not much. For us it seems to be working.

I was trying it out while my ex was on it and I liked it but I was not going in full force. My ex tried it for about 3 weeks and he said he couldn't handle all the restrictions.
I too agree that staying away from certain foods is not the best way and frankly as a compulsive overeater restriction is the worst thing for me but I am at the same time working on eating cleaner fresher food so in a way which is also part of the paleo diet but on that diet you have to be careful about what grains you eat I think it is something like no rice (not even brown) but you can eat quinoa or something like that.
We were trying it out about 2 years ago so I have forgotten most of the rules.
I say read up and investigate then try it and if you like it slowly modify your eating. I already rarely eat rice or white or sweet potatoes and I try to eat as few carbs as I can that are not vegetables and when I am not compulsively overeating my numbers are good and I feel better.
good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Has anyone tried the Paleo Diet? I've gotten a few books on it but I find I'm confused by the guidelines.
