Darlene I know no to touch sweets, I am not crazy over ice cream. I am lactose intolerant. When I spoke of depervation I was speaking of healthy grains. and the like. If I eat anything sweet like you I will crave them and not be able to stop eating them and that can be trouble. My a1c was 6 but my new dr took me off one of my meds... saying that I did not need them. We shall see and My morning numbers are up and I hate it.

That's the truth. When the meds are needed to control you diabetes, best to work with it. The complications are NOT worth it.

Darlene well I love both and at presence I am eating both. I love oats. I feel if I eat them in moderation things will run smoothly. Deprivation does not work too well for me. I do not have sweets, no fried foods no red meat. I feel I have given up enough. I could always tweak things but we shall see. I know what foods affect me mostly. No to sweet potatoes, bananas, I do not eat starchy veggies. no to brown rice. lets see...there are a lot of nos. I had my battle of not being on meds when first diagnosed. After having diabetes 12 years I am so over that. Meds are just another way to fight against it. After all who wants diabetic complications??? raises hands??? Not me.

Pat, have you tried cutting grains and maybe checking on how the fruits affect things? What my doctor gave me last year has fruit okay, but no grains. She said she found it worked for most of her patients. I have seen where a lot of people have trouble with most fruits, though. I guess you need to have quite a bit of fiber in the fruit to be able to eat it. Don't know if that would help avoid the meds or not. I know that diet doesn't work in all cases.

I started out with exercise and diet 7 years into my care but of 2008 I was put on meds every since. I did take kombiglyze 2.5 1000 mgs twice a day and it worked good but our insurance told me they would not cover it any more Now I have to try something new. I hate it! I attempt to eat healthier and this includes some whole grains, some fruit and veggies and poultry. I am allergic to fish. I do have tofu but that is my call.

Fancy: Yes, I do eat low carb and avoid all the simple ones (white sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, and processed foods.)

I was on Metformin for several years, but couldn't continue it because it affected my IBS, so I don't take anything now. I would be fine if I could stay away from carbs because I had my A1c down to 6.5 while off meds when I started that year at 9.0. I get so many side effects from different meds that there is some worry about putting me on something else. I take BP med and they tried a different kind which left my ankles about twice their size. My guess is that if you aren't too high many people can go to low carb or even just a carb count lower than 75-100 and control their diabetes fairly well. I don't know about someone with a high A1c.

I was diagnose type 2 in Jan. 2010 with a blood sugar over 300 and an A1C of 13. NOT good. Initially the Dr. wanted to put me on both insulin and oral medication. I asked her to give me one month to see what I could do with the oral med, nutrition and exercise. I found SP. The rest is history.

I started on Metformin in Jan. 2010 and was off in March 2011. I checked my blood sugars faithfully (still do) so I could figure out what foods I could (or should not) eat. That combined with exercise helped me lose weight so I didn't need the meds anymore.

I have been off meds ever since March 2011 and control my blood sugar w/diet and exercise.

Love is the root of all things good in life.

Does everyone take meds for their diabetes or just control it with healthy diet?

Only I can make it happen
