I am a BSN, CCRN travel nurse on assignment at FL Hosp Orlando CVICU and I pick up per diem shifts for HCA in Hillsborough county where I live. I've been traveling for 12 years and enjoy it alot. I need to lose 100lbs, but more importantly I want to be able to climb stairs without huffing and puffing after the first flight, and I want to be able to walk those stairs without my knees hurting.

One step at a time

Wow! so impressed with what everyone is doing in nursing.
I've been an RN BSN for 34 years worked in ER, Hospice and palliative, now in Neurology coordinating a multidisciplinary ALS Clinic.
I will be 60 soon and I'd like to take care of myself as well as I care for my patients.
I need to lose about 50 lbs to feel better and do away with meds.
Am going to the gym right now.
Let's do this emoticon

Currently I'm a BSN working in outpatient cardiology on nightshift. I take care of patients who come in with chest pain, Afib/Aflutter, CHF exacerbation, COPD exacerbation, PE, Snycope, and DVTs. We're a very small unit, 12 beds, 2 nurses working at a time, sometimes just 1 nurse.

I'm actually getting ready to move into Neuro Critical Care at another hospital on days. Hoping in the next 4-5 years I can go back for my Master's in CRNA.

Thank-you. I loved working as a LPN. Working as housekeeper and janitor, along with being a nurse was crazy - we had no employees due to some being south in alcohol rehab centres and a death, as Suzanne was murdered by her husband. We all hated working the boiler, they didn't teach that in school! LOL! I loved being resident vet assistant - to the Nursing Practitioner. That night though, she told me that I was fine doing it on my own, to call if I ran into anything that I couldn't deal with. At one point we had more dogs than people in the ER! LOL!

That's an interesting career. I'm sorry you weren't recognized for the great nurse you are. I firmly believe that LPNs are great nurses and have every skill and ability any RN has with the same training.

I'm glad I don't have to cook meals and clean bathrooms. Caring for the sled dogs is something else.

I was a LPN for 15 years, then left the profession to shift into counseling and support work. At the time LPN(s) were not recognized outside of the facility setting and the Association (in BC) wasn't all that keen on shifting changes. There were some of us advocating for recognition that we worked in community services, community health care and were involved in both home health care and mental health services. To keep my license I was required to return to hospital and show competence in many areas, that I would never use if there was community nursing recognition. Since hospitals weren't hiring LPN(s) at that time, and the Association fees doubled, I chose to allow my license to expire.

As a LPN I worked in the Arctic and down south in city hospitals. I also carried out private nursing and community home care nursing. I've worked pretty well all areas in hospital, except NCIU or ICU. Up north, we also did medications, x-rays, lab work, morque work, administration, medivacs, fixed the boiler, cooked meals, cleaned bathrooms and did the laundry, along with acute care, extended care and ER.

One time there was an evening where I took care of all the (sled) dogs that came in ill, while the RN ran the people ER. It was quite the night. haha!

I currently work in a program supporting foster parents and caregivers (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc) in the home. I also work in a program supporting children and youth with or without special needs. I came into this after 15 years of working as a child and youth counselor in a domestic violence program.

Hey guys.. I hope its ok I joined your team even though I'm not a nurse.. yet. All the nursing student teams seem to be inactive and there's no way to take over as leader.

I just got my acceptance letter in the mail yesterday. I start nursing school in January. I am SO excited!!

Is there any advice you can give a newbie?

I have been a nurse for 39 years, 21 years in ICU, med surg, 5 years in hospice, 4 years in palliative care. Searching for job that accomodates needs after back injury 14 1/2 years ago on duty. Using my palliative care training to help out at church, in family and community at large. Just got back from supporting mysister and brother in law as he went through his last days with a brain tumor. While there realized mom has dementia issues not noticed over the phone. She lives 4 hours away... Akward stage of life... I do love the palliative care work and hope to continue somehow in nursing.

The DNA of joy is thankfulness

I have been a RN for 39 years. I have been a Public Health nurse for 18 years. The previous 21 years I worked ICCU and ER. I have always been overweight. My weight didn't keep me from performing my duty or enjoying life until my mid-40's. That's when I changed jobs. I have worn out my body requiring 2 joint replacement surgeries. I have worked full time for 45 years. I hope to retire in 2 more years. I have attempted weight loss more times than I can remember. This time I have partnered with a coworker. We walk on lunch break. We share recipes and offer encouragement to one another. Her mother is my age and housebound due to multiple health problems. Many were preventable. Really like using the Spark People site for tracking my activities.

I'm a telenurse (a telephone advice nurse) I've been doing this for 12 years now, but before that I was a pediatric nurse. I worked for 10 years in the pediatric emergency and as an IV nurse, as well as 5 years in general peds.

I miss the kids sometimes, but I can't complain too much since I get to work from home.

I have been an LPN (licensed practical nurse for 20 years now. I work in a nursing home in which I have been employed for 29 years. Lots of hours on my feet and this extra weight doesn't help; it must come off. I'm a TOPS member following the 17Day diet. I joined June 21st and I have lost 17 lbs. as of Tuesdays weigh in. Many more to go!

I haven't been employed as a nurse since 1991, however my skills and knowledge base has helped many friends and acquaintances over the years! I do keep my license active via online CEUs...We live in Suriname, thus don't have access to RN seminars etc. When I worked, I was a labor and delivery room nurse. Since I was previously a Navy nurse, I did get experience in several different areas (med/surg, ortho, gyn, pediatrics, etc.).

I have been a nurse for almost 7 years (whaaaaat? How did that happen?!). I started my career in the Air Force and served as a ASU/PACU nurse for 4 years then did a travel assignment.

Now I'm working in the cardiac cath lab and interventional radiology. I love it! It's fast paced and absolutely fascinating! In fact, I'm on call now! Hopefully I get to sleep through the night! :-)

Hello,

I am new to this team. I am a new nurse, having only been a RN for a year and a half now. I have worked in the hospital on an inpatient hospice/med/surg unit for the last year, and just started a new job with developmentally disabled adults in a group home setting. I am going to school online for my RN to BSN through Aspen University and should be done in about 6 months! It is a busy time for me, but decided I need to put my health higher on the list of priorities. So, here we go!

I am a home care nurse and I absolutely love it! I work in a rural setting so in any given day I can see pediatrics, post-op, geriatrics, mental health, and palliative. It is such a rewarding job and I love seeing people in their own home. It shifts the power for change into their hands!

I went back to college when I was 35 years old. I would have never thought I would have been a nurse when I was in high school. I took typing, filing, short hand. I loved business Ed class. I didn't go to college, I did have a scholarship, for music but didn't take it. I met my then boyfriend, now husband the summer before my senior year. So of course all I knew was that I was in love. I was at home watching my 3 kids, watching other wonderful kids starting a daycare in my home. So I took a CPR class from our fire station, and one of my friends who was an EMT talked me into taking the EMS class at the college (2 nights a week) they would pay for it if I passed. That class got me in into the hospital for clinical studies. It was all God's plan for my life, and His planned timing. I waited until my youngest went into kindergarten when I went back to college. I took the 2 year program, but took it in 3 years so I could take all the non nursing classes first. My brain hadn't been dusted off for a very long time. I am a RN who started out working the floor of a small hospital of a 30 bed med/surgical/telemetry floor then went to a 20 bed med/ surgical floor. That was full time so that was wonderful day- evening 8 hour shift. Then I went to weekend package 3 day 12 hour - busy 40 bed cardiac unit. Loved that fast paced unit! Worked there for 7 years. I only left due to management reasons. My last job was for Homecare/ hospice - worked there 5 years. I am now no longer working. Which makes me sad. I am trying to get disability. My back is just fried. I am on pain medication. I need to take it first thing in the morning. I am pretty good then. The only thing I would do different with my career, I would have kept I going with my Bachlor degree. Now just to work the floor you have to have your BS degree. Ridiculous. I did not get mine because I wanted to work with the patients, n be behind a desk, or teach. Oh well... This is or was me. Sorry this got so long

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Good Morning,

I've been an RN for almost 8 years & have worked as an ICU nurse, school nurse & 7 mo ago switched back to the hospital setting as an ER nurse. Most days make me crazy, but it is challenging & I am learning a lot. A fellow nurse recently told me that I would be comfortable after 5 years, lol...

Coming back to SP to feel better & have more energy! Got too sedentary as a school nurse & now I'm on my feet for the whole shift & it's exhausting.

Anyone from Indiana?

Have a great day!

Been a nurse for over 40 years and am planning my exit strategy. I think I'll be able to walk away and never look back. The profession has changed so much and some of it has not been good.

I like the professionalism, the increasing need to upgrade our skills. I like that we are important parts of the health care team.

I do not like that we are treated in much the same way as we were 40 years ago in most places. I do not like that we are paid a "pink collar" wage.

In my state, there is a proposition to add a "fee" to our licenses (and that of doctors and hospitals) to help fund medicaid. This is a part of what is coming.

Walking away is going to be much easier than I would have thought ten years ago.

Hello, I'm an RN,CPN. Started in a small community hospital. Worked a short time in a pediatric long term care facility and now I'm in a pediatric endocrinology office. Trying to psych myself into going back for my BSN.

I am an LPN........... Began in acute care facility ..... Intensive Care. ..... Many challenges but loved it.
I work in a very large Orthopedic clinic ....... 23 Orthopedists .... 16 surgeons. Approximately 500 to 600 people come in daily. I began when the clinic opened 7 years ago; first year as Triage nurse. Am presently changing and transitioning into a new position .... Life is never dull and I love to keep learning.

I know what you mean about Long term care and the patients. You get to really know the patients well and they get to know and trust you too! Have a nice day.

I am a new Adult Nurse Practitioner (graduated last year), and I currently work with a socioeconomically disadvantaged geriatric population providing them both primary and urgent care services. Prior to completing my NP, I was an OR Nurse (circulating, scrub) for 7 years with a focus on GYN and GYN oncology. I also completed my RNFA (registered nurse first assist), and I have worked with both Urology and GYN surgery as a first assistant! Assisting is so much fun and I truly miss it! I love the patients that I currently serve, but hope I can find a position some day that will be a good balance of OR and office visit time with an oncology focus. I would also like to teach BSN students. Until then, I'll soak up all the learning experiences I can!

I am an unemployed nurse. I have worked with primarily adult cardiac patients. Somehow, I happened into management -- not once but, twice. I am currently considering transitioning into Pediatrics.

I'm and LVN working in the VA with patients with tramatic brain injuries in the transitional program. We train them to be able to go back to the military or with jobs when they get out.
Veterans and Active Duty Military are the BEST patients!!

Long term care nursing rocks--I did that as well for a while. More power to you!

Blessed be.

I am a Licensed Practical Nurse. I passed my NCLEX on January 28, 2013 and I've been working at a long term care facility since February 26, 2013. This is my first full time job and I am 36 years old. It has taken a lot of adjusting and has been very stressful but I do love my job.

We do need to nurture our new nurses. Or at least stop eating them and accept their presence and differences! I am a Perinatal Nurse who also has my MSN to teach new nurses. I can get really bad on the floor some days depending on who is working. My thought is I want to make sure the new nurses can take care of me someday. I don't want to breed resentment and animosity so they do not take care of their "older generation"!
