If you're not having fun, then why run?

You don't get to choose how you're going to die, or when. You can only decide how you're going to live. Now.

Congratulations, Patrick!

I ran 16 races in 2016. I took an age group award in every race!

On Saturday I completed my first organized race of any distance, a half-marathon. A year ago I never thought I'd say that a long run was fun, but honestly I had a great time. It was a big event with over 9,000 runners across four different distances (4 mile, 10k, HM, Marathon). We ran through several neighborhoods south of downtown where residents turned out in force to cheer on all the runners, play music, and generally turn the event into a big street party.

I hoped to finish at around 2:30:00, but as we lined up for the start I saw two guys near me holding a "2:20" pace sign. A local running club had provided volunteers to run as pacers for various finishing times. The weather was perfect for running (60 degrees and cloudy) and I felt really good, so I thought, what the heck, I'll try to keep them in sight. It went great and I finished in 2:18:57.

To my surprise, I felt strong at the end. I realized I could have gone faster, but I'd already been going significantly faster than my training pace. I kept expecting to hit a wall like I would during training long runs, but I never did. My last training run was 12.5 miles done as 2 min/1 min run/walk intervals. The last couple training run miles were cut to 1 min run / 2 min walk because I had no strength left in my legs. Maybe the cooler weather on race day helped. Maybe the excitement did. Maybe following pacers helped though they weren't doing intervals so I yo-yo'ed back and forth to them the whole race. Probably it was all of the above.

Anyway, that's it. It was a blast. :)

Finished the Austin marathon. Feet were also OK but my legs weren't.
Not happy that I tend to get dizzy around mile 18 or so each time, but celebrating the finish.

Good job, Dee. I'm just celebrating that I'm back running. That is a victory in itself. May or may not get back to the speed and fitness I had. Will try. Time will tell.

Finished the Texas Marathon on January 1st with feet that weren't screaming at me (because I took it very slowly.)
