Finally weighed two weeks ago. Up to 112.
Sunday I was down to 110, but my weight is fluctuating wildly these days. That's usually a sign that I'm losing, as it's rock steady when I'm not.
I'm not going to worry much about this as I'm training pretty hard (for me) and don't need to be stressing my body. Sound like a cop-out?

Numbers on the scale don't really matter. It is how you feel before , during , and after your runs. Do you feel great? How is your endurance?? Use other measures to judge whwere your are and where you need to be? It takes time and patience to go farther and faster without injury or malnutrion. Eat to Fuel and you will go where you need to go!!

Well put, Catherine. I'm also finding that eating several small meals throughout the day works well. Especially in this heat! I lose my appetite when it gets this hot! I get hungry, but full faster it seems. But eating small meals throughout the day seems to really keep my blood sugar in check and is more manageable than larger ones. Especially earlier in the day. With this heat, I have to get up earlier to do my runs and bike rides (and am already getting up at 4:40 AM to do the swims). It's WAY too early for me to eat a full breakfast. Nauseates me just thinking about food. But I can manage a Kashi Granola bar or a banana. Then, after the workout, I can eat the rest of my breakfast. In the end, it's what feels right for you within reason.

Haven't been weighed in two weeks due to family on both sides visiting! Think I gained a pound or two last week, so hoping to have lost that this week. Thursday evening is the weigh in. :D

STAY COOL! Whew, it's hot!

Actually, you don't want to reduce calories too much while training for distance events. You need the calories to fuel recovery and the training effects you are after. Are you using a tape measure as well as the scale? When I started strength training plus marathon training, I lost 2 clothing sizes without losing a single pound on the scale.

The adaptations from endurance training include an increase in blood volume (to deliver more O2 to the muscles and carry off waste products quicker), as well as an increase in the fluid stored in the muscle, which is needed to burn the increased glycogen. Both of these adaptions will show up as an increase on the scale, but they are a good thing.

In my experience, the timing of your nutrition is important to get full benefits. Many people complain of an increased appetite when they start distance training. I've never had that problem, I think because I always eat a recovery meal within an hour of exercise. It is much harder to resist those snacks if you are hungry. Eating small meals several times a day also works well for me.

I am definitely NOT where I want to be. 130.8

I'd like to be 125 and solidly in the middle of healthy BMI - also to lose the extra fat around my middle and improve my speed !

Any advice about how to stay in the calorie range while running a lot would be appreciated! Also, tips on how to resist unhealthy foods and portion control.

Losing again but super slowly (obviously have not updated my weight loss ticker since the last time I lost but I refuse to move it higher!)

I'm glad there's so much recent discussion over eating more to lose. I think I may have been sabotaging myself by not eating enough to fuel me or my workouts. I'm going to shake things up and see what happens!

Catherine...you are correct....

OK...I took dietetics in college and although, never completed due to getting married, moving around every 2 yearsm having a couple of babies, etc,....I remember this much ....and...if you google this, you'll see not much, if anything, has really changed. Here's the science of calorie intake / output in a nutshell, with a link so you can find how much of these things you need for your own individualized weight loss:

Basal Metabolic Rate (MBR) is the rate at which your body burns calories simply to stay alive, minus ALL activity. It is the rate your body burns calories if you were to lie in bed, 24 hours and not move. You'd be surprised how many calories it takes just to pump your heart, move your blood and waste material...breathing, blinking, swallowing, etc.

For me, a 55 year old female, weight 176 lbs., it takes about 1450 calories just to stay alive. If I add daily routine activities (not counting intentional exercise), add about 200 calories (rough estimate), so now I am at 1650, minimum on an average, non-exercise day. This is the MINIMUM CALORIES I SHOULD BE PUTTING INTO MY BODY to maintain! To lose weight, I can cut the 200 calories of non-exercise calories and expect to lose close to a half a pound a week (3500 calories for a lb....7 days X 200 calories=1400). If I want to lose more, I SHOULD EXERCISE MORE......NOT EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER GO BELOW MY METABOLIC RATE (which for me, would be 1450 calories per day). Doing so causes my body to think I'm starving and my metabolism slips into survival mode....slows down. I'll get very hungry. If I ignore the hunger, it slows down even more. Living in America as I do with food being thrown at me in all different directions, I'm going to cave and start PORKING OUT...WHILE MY METABOLISM IS IN LOW GEAR! That is how we Americans get heavy!

So... When I exercise hard, I could easily accumulate another 300-900 or more calories burned (if I swim and bike over an hour each on a given day, I have burned almost a thousand calories!). I will probably lose weight to start out, but eventually, my body is going to get used to burning those calories like it is part of my BMR. I need to feed it to keep my metabolism high. BUT...I need to feed it with QUALITY CALORIES. Complex Carbs....and...PROTEIN, PROTEIN, PROTEIN. I'm bad at that part. The protein is going to keep you full longer and it's a double plus if you eat the QUALITY carbs with QUALITY protein. You should replace at least half of what you burn in exercise. There's controversy over just how much you should replace (some "experts" think you should replace them all....I kind of doubt that myself). A calorie is NOT a calorie. High fiber & protein foods take more energy to burn per calorie than a fat, simple carb food does. On days I train, I figure I should eat about 2,000 calories. On non-training days, 1650-1800.

To figure out YOUR BMR, click on the link below and plug in your numbers/gender, etc. With the activity portion below the calculator, be somewhat conservative. For example....I can burn a TON of calories training for my triathlons 6X a week. BUT...the rest of the day I SIT a LOT! I have a desk job all day and no little kids at home and a husband who occasionally travels, so I'm not all the active at home either unless I'm training. It is quite possible that even with all my exercise, I don't burn any more calories than a young mother chasing kids and cleaning the house during an average day! So keep in mind your daily activity as a whole.

DON'T FORGOT TO RESUBMIT YOUR NUMBERS AFTER YOU LOSE A FEW POUNDS. Your MBR changes with your weight, your age, and significant weekly average activity. So check it often. Here is the link:

www.bmrcalculator.org/

You can google BMR Calculator and get a slew of them. Each one is slightly different, so you can average out a few if you'd like, but ball park figures work.

Most important thing to keep in mind....NEVER EVER go below that minimum BMR rate in your eating or you will slow your metabolism down. This is why people who go on big time diets that are extreme lose weight quickly and then not only gain it all back, but additional weight as well. By the time they address their starvation, they overeat while their metabolism is very low. I do Weight Watchers (very nutritionaly sound!) and figured out (the OLD program....can't do it too well with the new program) how many calories I was eating with my points allotted to me. It went below my MBR, but if I ate my bonus points and/or exercise points, then I took in my minimum amount. Eat too little now and you are going to splurge and pay for it two fold. Take it slow....take it smart.

Robyn, I'm with you on the slowest loser gig!

Dawn, hang in there!

June 1 - 223.4
June 22 - 221.4

Goal Sept 5 - 212

Catherine's right, I think. I've started upping my calorie intake and I'm slowly losing again instead of stalling out. The BodyBugg site has my estimated caloric needs at 2050, where as Spark had me around 1650- whopping difference there! I'm shooting for middle ground and starting to see slow results.

Cindy, I found that each time I upped my cardio/exercise (either time and/or intensity), my weight loss stalled until I increased my calories. By the time I lost my last 5 pounds, I was eating almost at maintenance level calories. I checked out a number of other sites that have calorie estimators and decided that Spark recommendations were too low for someone doing marathon training. I'm not saying that it would work for everyone, but it did for me. Plus, I actually went with measurements and body fat calcs rather than the scale. I lost almost 10 pounds of body fat (and two clothing sizes) without losing a SINGLE pound on the scale. This was because I gained 10 pounds of muscle at the same time (from strength training, mostly).

If you are hungry, you aren't eating enough. Your body is cannibalizing muscle as well as burning fat to get fuel. Plus eating choices made when one is hungry in between meals are rarely as good as planned for calories. Underestimating really isn't the best strategy. The body wins out every time.

I can't believe we're 3 weeks in and my numbers look like this. One more week until my daughter's wedding. I had wanted initially to be at 136 for that, but 10 pounds in one week --that's not going to happen. I think my problem is there is too much pressure to lose weight so I'm sabotaging myself.

I am doing so poorly at this weight loss thing. I think one of the issues is that I have a lot of cardio and cook from scratch. I seem to put in both cardio and food intake conservatively. I did not count all the much I moved in the last two weeks. I made a soup and guessed it would be 6 servings and it ended up being 10. I did a 2 hour rowing class and only counted 45 minutes--there is downtime, but pehaps not as much as I'm guessing. Anyway if I do this and then try to stick to sparks calories suggestions I'm starving. I did it once in May for a week and lost 3.5 pounds. Mostly I cheat and eat when I'm really hungry. That has me maintaining at about 10 pounds above where I think I should be. I'm going to try to stop being so conservative in my estimates while sticking to the calorie suggestions through the end of the month. I have also upped my cardio done---I've been over for 3 weeks. That gives me 200 more calories to eat without just quiting.

Happens to the best of us, DK.... Can't tell you how many times I've had a gain! More than I've had losses apparently, or I wouldn't be on this thread! Hopefully, you'll be encouraged by others and will post a loss to encourage us soon! Hang in there!

Great job everyone on your dedication! Very inspiring for sure.

I'm scared to weigh myself tomorrow because I know it will not be good. It doesn't help that my daughter and I who were going to "control what we ate" to lose weight before her wedding, signed up for a cake decorating class at Michael's!!! What were we thinking? Last night's project was for each of us to bring our own two layer cake to fill and ice and decorate -- of course there's only my husband and my son at home to eat the two cakes and they're not the cake people...Ashley and I are. Not good. My dress was a little tight to zip up to begin with and that was about 2 months ago and all I've done is gain weight since! Okay thanks for letting me vent about my stupidity. :)

WTG Diane and others who have lost or even stayed the same (not easy this time of year). I think I might be up a little as well (for those who are struggling), but I'm hoping to start Weight Watchers tomorrow and get on a structured plan. Seems I have to pay money to make it work (and I hope it does!).

Keep on keeping on....as the Spark Team always says...

I'm in, but don't know what I weigh today. My goal for September 6th is 107. That's the weight at which I feel best.

We've had several team members comment on the Daily Challenge about losing those last pounds. Anyone interested in joining a summer weight loss challenge. Labor Day this year is September 5th, so if your interested post your starting weight and the weight you hope to reach by September 6th( or so) Come back and let us know how you are doing. I'm making this a sticky for now, so I can see if anyone is interested

June 1 141.8 Goal Sept 6 130
