I have had to use the email receipts a few times and have been so glad to have them. Once my Fitbit broke and I was trying to remember when I bought it so I searched my Gmail for it and found the receipt and was able to attach it to the email I sent to Fitbit support. Same for a few other items that there have been questions about.

With our house closing today we got not only paper copies of everything but email copies, too. And the same throughout the whole process with the mortgage company with the email documents arriving quickly. I just made a file in my gmail called Relocation to store all the emails relating to our move and since we have been living between two states for the past three months that has made life so much easier!

I love the idea of the tickler file. I'll have to clean out my lateral file to make room to try this! Thanks for sharing! emoticon

Scan papers in addition to or instead of filing them is a great idea. Make sure you have a backup of the scanned documents (dropbox, iCloud, Evernote, etc) in case of hard drive failure.

Also use your phone cameras to take photos of documents, too! They work in a pinch until you can file them or scan them later. And provide another proof of having a document or receipt!

I love stores that now offer email receipts instead of paper ones! How many times have I dug through the trash looking for a receipt? You know how it can be when you get home from shopping and are so organized (LOL!!). Emailed receipts are great and I wish more stores would do them, but taking a minute to take a picture of one might be useful, particularly for a big purchase item that has a limited warranty.

Good idea! I always make a scan of all my papers and keep them in Dropbox.

1) Have an alphabetical filing system for papers (you can also scan papers and store by type-date-time of scanning into in the computer if you keep an alphabetical index of them) but original copies of certain papers need to be store in a file and an alphabetical system is best for that.

2) Make a tickler file
I am finding that the most useful file for me is a tickler file, with folders numbered 1-31 and months labeled January - December. If May 15, 2014 is the current date, The first folder is May then folders 15-31 follow, then June, then folders 1-14. So in general the folder for the current day and month is up front then folders appropriate for the next 30 or so days. So if I have a doctors appointment coming up on June 10 and there is an important document regarding that appointment it would be filed in folder number 10.
Right now it would be filed in the June folder since it is more than thirty days off, but I have papers for an important meeting on April 11 in folder # 11. Tonight I will have moved folder 27 from the front of the numbered folders to behind folder 26 and have inspected folder number 28 for any Friday documents and my Excel workbook for any Friday tasks.

3) process all papers deposited into your in-box regularly and file any important papers.
