These 8 weeks have been a great learning opportunity. I more aware of the carbs in food and how much I'm actually eating. I'm exercising on a regular basis, and I'm beginning to change some habits. I ordered oatmeal instead of my usual fast food breakfast, and threw away half the bun on the burger I had for lunch and didn't order the fries or a diet coke. Those were huge obstacles for me in the past. I met all three goals that I set initially, including losing 10 lbs! Hopefully, these will be changes for a lifetime!

This was a wonderful challenge for me! I am not a diabetic but the doctor said my numbers were climbing and I need to start watch cause I have a family history of various illnesses including diabetes. My husband is a diabetic and opened his own sparkpage and we challenge each other, he also has heart disease, he went to his doctor last week and she was so happy cause she has never seen his numbers this good. And we both lost 20-25 pounds!! Needless to say we will stick with sparkpeople beyond meeting our weight lose goals. We still have a long way to go but with God, each other and sparkpeople we will make it!!!! emoticon

God will be with us till the end!!!

There's things I need to get more consistent with such as eating within my food diary ranges but I learned a lot about how to eat. Exercise hasn't been a problem with me as I was consistent with exercising at least 5-6 days a week anyway. I am most surprised that I stuck with using the food diary. This is the longest stretch I've kept with it. The information and encouragement provided by this challenge was very helpful and I'll work on incorporating more healthy habits as time goes on. I've noticed a change in my body although with my bad eating I stuck with a 5 lb loss.
Thanks!

I've lost 15 pounds, my blood sugars are better than I've had for years, I'm not hungry all the time, and I am increasing my exercising as my heart lets me. I've really enjoyed the community aspect. I will keep working hard and if I have a setback I will restart the 8 week challenge. Good luck to all

8 weeks.... and I seem to have completely transformed my outlook, expectations and lifestyle. Whatever the switch was that I hit, I'll never know. But I am so grateful to myself and those helping me. I have lost 16 pounds, my blood sugars have normalized. I am eating better than I ever have in my life and I can see for the first time that this is something I can live with and not just a "fix". I loved the concept of an 8 week challenge, so I have joined the rookie runners 8 week challenge and will run the virtual 5k by the end of October! I haven't run since high school! The hope and optimism I have about the state of my health is so wonderful. I hope everyone else on the challenge has experienced their own successes, cause it feels so great!

I broke a plateau and lost about 14 pounds... it was a pretty good "run"! LOL

I did discover some problems along the way, mostly that my neuropathy is much worse than I believed... good to know, so I can work on retraining the muscles to help compensate! I've since started physical therapy...

I think the challenge was good for me in a lot of ways, but I couldn't use the exercises given and had to come up with another way to deal with that side of it-- the concepts are valid with or without the provided ones... and I'll continue to use THAT! LOL

FBS 101. I feel that I have really benefitted from this challenge and will re-up as soon as my 8 weeks is up in order to keep myself on track.. Still have a ways to go before reaching my goal weight and am taking longer than expected. I am losing weight slowly and becoming more fit. This tells me that the small but permanent changes I'm making are important and will stay with me. Thanks, SPARK, for offering this Challenge.

Great Job Remaxamanda ! emoticon What are your plans now? Hope that you will stick around and join those who have finished the challenge at the After the 8th week ! Right here on the 8th week Discussion.

I am so very happy to say that for the 3rd time i have finished the challenge. This time around I was working with insulin and it was all new again. thanks to you who offered suggestions and help during the last 8 weeks. It made a very scary time for me so much easier. Great advice and suggestions! Thanks Coach Tanyo and co leaders. Mostly Thanks Glucerna for sponsoring this challenge here at SP ! I wasn't looking for any form of weight loss this trip around. I just wanted to break even and not gain weight due to the insulin. I have lost a # weighted in today early and there it was once again 259 ! What I was able to do was get my blood sugars back into good areas. Learning to use the insulin and know how to correct and not over correct lows! Until the trip around the 8 weeks, you will be able to find me right here at the after the 8 Weeks !

There's still so much room for improvement, but I've learned the importance of tracking so I'm more aware of what I'm putting into my body. I've learned that it's not just about staying in the caloric range, but making sure that your body gets enough of a variety of nutrients it needs to function properly. I have more energy, I'm doing less cardio and more weight training where before I was doing only cardio and no weight training. I've learned that even though I may not have the support at home or with family, there's a whole community of spark friends who are there for me and who have motivated and inspired me with their stories, their support and their comments. I don't know any of you, but I love you all and am so grateful for this challenge and this opportunity to better my life and set a better example for those around me.

I deviated a little from the workout routines, going for something more intense, but I made great strides.

1) My blood sugars are much better. I just got results from my doctor back today for a test and I was almost in the normal range (not bad for someone who has been a consistant uncontrolled type 1 diabetic since age 7).

2) Basals are less than half of what they were and still falling.

3) I am sticking to a healthy, rounded diet. Basically the diet I should have been following all along.

4) I lost a pretty good amount of weight, a good start to what I have been referring to as my adventure or quest (it has a better ring to it than weight loss program).

5) I am more energetic, rested, busy, happy, fun, and thoughful.

6) This new lifestyle is so much more fulfilling and I can't see myself going back to my old ways, though I know it wouldn't be too hard to fall back into the old routines. There are hard moments, but there is a better motivator, ME. Eventually the old ways will be far behind me and these ways will become second nature. Until then I have to stay on top of things.

7) My self esteem is higher than it's ever been. Though the weight loss isn't even halfway to my goal, I look in the mirror now and smile. I've done a lot already and I can see the potential of what will be. I can't wait to make the surprise appearance back to my college campus. I haven't let any of my friends there know about this, just my family and people I see everyday (to keep concern down) and this is always in person.

8) I am more confident and feel like I can handle anything. Look at all I've accomplished so far, and this is just my summer.

Thank you for helping to get me started :-)

My improvements are much more subtle:
1. I've gotten in the habit of checking my fbs every morning. My numbers have improved because I could report to my Dr. and so got a new med. and tweeked an old one. Overall the fbs went down from the 130's to 110's.

2. Over the 8 weeks I've Strength Trained more times than the Challenge recommended...hopefully that habit will hold up!

3. Cardio has become a regular...daily...thing...tho I attribute that to being able to get in the pool every day. But the Challenge focused me on exercise as a daily MUST!

4. I had to go back and check my weight at the beginning (my goal was to lose 8 lbs.). I didn't weigh today (forgot) but I know I've gained, rather than lost. I'll weigh tomorrow to make sure and see how much.

So, two steps ahead and one back. It looks like staying within my calorie allowance is the thing to focus on in the future. I DO want to lose weight, but my numbers are good and I think the exercise "thing" is consistent (at least for the last 2 months...LOL).

Good Luck to you all! I enjoyed the Challenge...especially the fact that I finished it!

Keep on Sparking! Carol emoticon

Lost 8 lbs, reduced insulin from 38 units to 30 per day, daily bloods under 100 and A1C test at 5.7 and doctors says I am his best patient. Now to keep that weight off and set another challenge to lose even more.

Done!! Enjoyed this challenge..my first one ... joined May 20th..lost a smidge over 10 pounds, exercising regularly...got my blood sugars down some...
Think I will stick around in this site for a while. I have just now also joined the 10 minute work-out challenge. I do work out..cycling and walking along with some ST...but what I want to focus on is making sure I do something regularly during the work week... I tend to get lazy a few nights a week there..lol...

I have completed the challenge as of this morning...WOOHOO!!

As I stated in my sparkversary blog on Saturday, I lost 23 pounds to date, I've got my blood sugar numbers under control, I'm still titrating down on my Levemir insulin, my A1C dropped from 9.1 to 5.9, my triglyceride level is down from 271 to 139 and I am one exercising mama!!

How did I do it!?! LOTS of praying, keeping real close track of my food intake on the nutrition tracker, especially the carbs, used all the exercise tools from Coach Nicole for this challenge, started doing cardio every single day, strength training 3x weekly, went back to taekwondo & kickboxing, checked my blood sugar 4x daily, posted on the boards here and talked ALOT to my SP friends, got my family involved by joining and completing the Healthy Family Makeover Challenge here on SP, and making sure that my friends and family close by knew what I was doing so that they could support and motivate me too!!

Thank you again to SP, Coach Tanya, Coach Nicole and Glucernabrand for coming up with this challenge for diabetics. It has been an amazing journey. I started and got to week 4 and didn't feel like I was giving it my all so I made myself start over and now here I am 12 weeks later and feeling like a new woman with a brand new attitude!!

Let's keep on sparkin' my friends!!

I'm in Week 8 and I feel fantastic. I go to my doctor on Thursday for my monthly check-in and I'm not sure what tests we're running, but I'm hoping we'll redo my bloodwork and arrange for a 3-hr Glucose test. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic in January and since then my blood sugar has steadily improved with my sleep, diet and exercise changes. My fasting readings are within the 90s, and 2-hrs after a meal my reading is in the 100s. I couldn't be happier!

emoticon

In the past 8 weeks I have only lost 2 pounds though. I'm used to plateaus and I hit them often but with the help of SparkPeople, I've learned to work through them and not let them get me down. The biggest help SP has given me is the ability to let go of the scale. I used to weigh myself daily and this behavior would get me into a gigantic rut. I no longer fixate on the scale or the number it gives me, because it's just a number. In the past 8 weeks, I've dropped another pants size, firmed my muscle mass, purged another 20% of my closet of clothes that are too big, and have started to run! I can't believe THAT! I've never run in my life, but my 5K walks were screaming for more of a challenge. I was walking so briskly that my body naturally started to jog on its own. It's an incredible feeling, knowing you're doing your body good and feeling it crave the work.

I'll post my check-up results at the end of the week. Thank you so much for this challenge!!

This is my first day of week 8 but so far thanks to this challenge, I have lowered my blood sugar considerable, and my weight is also down 20 lbs. I didn't believe I woul ever go under 200 again, but I am there. I just feel like celebrating this weigh in today. I owe it all to this challenge, and the people here.

no matter how hard it seems to get I feel so good when I do get to where I want to be each week.

I finished the 8 week challenge and I am so thankful that I was told about SparkPeople. I have been diabetic for 16 years and have always struggled to keep my blood sugar down. I have not lost the weight that I wanted to, but my lifestyle choices have definitely changed for the better. I will continue tracking my food and exercising until I can reach a reasonable weight and have control of my diabetes again. Thank you for your help and inspiration.

I am grateful for the start sparkpeople has given me. I want to continue with the progress I have made with this challenge. I have lost right around 20 pounds and my sugars are not 250-300 when I wake up. This morning's reading was 152. There is still room for improvement in my eating patterns and activity level. I am hoping that each day I can make the right decisiions, not looking for perfection, looking for improvement. I am going to be visiting to encouraging others. I am on to a new challenge on how to handle stress. Learning new ways of handling life is going to help me maintain my new attitude about how to eat. Thank you guys for all the support!!!

The Lord doesn't expect us to work harder than we are able. He doesn't (nor should we) compare our efforts to those of others. Our Heavenly Father asks only that we do the best we can - that we work according to to our full capacity, however great or however small that may be.

I lost 5 pounds and got my sugar under control again. I retake my HA1C today.

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now.
200 plus lbs lost without surgery, crazy diets, or extreme exercise- so have hope!

Finished my 8th week yesterday. Had to do alternate exercises due to tendonitis but worked out anyway. I have lost almost 20 pounds and my blood sugar is way lower than it was 8 weeks ago. I am very proud of myself and will continue to follow the exercises and goals that I have begun.

Today is my last day of Week 8 and I just got home from the Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society. This was my first, I had a great time and according to my Omron pedometer I walked 13,799 steps, 6.96 Miles (5095 Aerobic Steps in 45 min, burned 643 calories). Survivor dinner was awesome, catered by the local Graystone Mansion. emoticon I feel great, get on the scale tomorrow morning and see how I did this week. But it is only a number, I know I am getting healthier and that is my goal.

Yesterday was my last day on the 8 week Diabetes Weight Loss Challenge. I've lost about 3 lbs. I am also working with Weight Watchers so I had my journaling. It has been a challenge. I did get a disappointing report from my doctor on glucose reading but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I have a lot of reading to do on menus and proper eating with diabetes 2. I enjoyed working out and I feel very alert. This has been great to do. emoticon

Today is my last day of week 8. The last 4 days we have been without power because of the storms that blew through here on Thursday night. My routine was turned inside out and I did not have the luxury of planning ahead, which is vital to my program. I did not do well in the eating healthy category. Got lots of exercise though! Just before the storms I weighed in 2 lbs. lighter at my TOPS group and hit several goals and will win 6 different awards for this month and I have Sparkpeople to thank as well as my TOPS group! I hit a 20 week stretch of "consecutive no gains" and I hope to continue that streak. Although I am not sure that will happen with the way this week has gone. I enjoyed the challenge and even though I began to peter out the last couple of weeks I feel I did great! I plan to continue on with the challenge and give and get inspiration. I lost a total of 16 lbs. over the last 8 weeks and I am proud of that. I feel great and believe it can only get better from here as long as I keep working it!

Today I'm finishing my second set of 8-weeks. When I started 16 weeks ago, my weight was 176.44, my then-current HbA1c was 6.0, and my average daily pre-meal BG was 102.6 / 5.7. I was also on Metformin, 500mg / once per day.

As of today, my weight is 162.36, my most recent (end of March) HbA1c was 5.0, and my average pre-meal BG is 86.9 / 4.8 - and I have been off Metformin for a few weeks.

The features on SP are tools that are saving my life - I use them every day. But even more relevant for me was having a challenge designed with diabetes in mind. The Lifestyle changes it addresses have really kept me focused, and have really worked for me.

I posted a picture back on the 3rd February, and a follow-up today (to the team board, that is). I will be checking in from time to time, especially to see what's happening with the exercise videos and so on - they are tremendous.

Most of all, THANK YOU SPARK PEOPLE - the coaches, the SparkGuy, the team leaders, and all the Sparkers who contribute. What a difference you've made in my life, and in the lives of countless others - and it's been provided free. I truly can't thank you all enough.

I finished!! I enjoyed the different workout videos. I always do better when I have a plan. Thanks to this challenge I felt confident to start my own exercise program (I went with P90X since my cousin is letting me use her dvds!) and have successfully completed two weeks. I started this challenge at 222lbs and am now finished at 215! I'll take a 7lb loss!! Good luck to everyone else.

This was a fantastic challenge because it made me refocus on my health, my biggest priority. I've seen a noticeable difference in my blood glucose levels and my energy levels. I feel like I've developed some healthy habits that I can easily maintain. I feel proud of myself.

Congratulations on the awesome results of all your work these past 8 weeks! It's fantastic that you've met or exceeded your goals, and it sounds like you're feeling empowered to continue with all of the healthy habits you've put into place.

Week 8...done! I am so very proud to have accomplished all that I have over the past 8 weeks on this challenge. I have learned so many new things about myself and what it really means to live a healthier lifestyle, done so much more for my body and my health (more than I ever dreamed was possible) and met so many great and wonderful folks that I'm so happy to now call my friends. I want to thank Spark People and Glucerna for sponsoring this challenge and for affording us all the opportunity and tools to help change our lives and lifestyles for the better and help get this disease under control.

I am also proud to say that I have lost almost 5 pounds this past week bringing my total weight loss for the challenge to just over 10 pounds! I really pumped up the volume last week in the fitness arena and did 7 straight days of cardio and 6 days of alternating strength training. My fasting blood sugars are in the low 100's, which is fantastic for me as I have what is referred to as "dawn phenomenon" which, for those of you who aren't familiar with it, means that I tend to have really high sugar levels in the early mornings. My overall readings have also come way down as well. When I started the challenge, as many of you already know, I was running on average in the mid 300's with swings into the 450-500 range and I am now consistently below 200 and most of the time below 150. I have also been able to reduce my insulin intake which was, if you remember, my primary goal of this challenge. So needless to say...I'm a winner, as are all of you, right along with me! ...and... emoticon

Thank you all for sharing my journey and I look forward to staying an active member of this challenge to help others through their journey and to keep myself in check as well. So I'll see you around....LITERALLY! ;-) :-P

It's great to hear about your success, Lauri! You've made a lot of progress with exercise, and it sounds like not only are you losing weight, but your blood sugar levels are also getting to where you want them. That has to feel good! Please continue to post and stay in touch, even though you completed the 8-week challenge. Staying connected with others with similar goals is one of the best ways to keep making progress.

I've been done for a couple of weeks now, but I got a lot out of it. I'm struggling with my morning fastings right now, but I also have a bladder infection that may be influencing them and I did lose about 10 pounds overall during the challenge. I have increased my endurance while walking and am now up to a mile on flat ground walking in the house. Outside I'm doing close to a mile with just a couple of breaks. I also want to thank Spark People and Glucerna for sponsoring the challenge as I was one of the weight loss winners. I still haven't decided what I want to spend my money on, but I will soon. It was a great experience for me and one I will probably repeat in a couple of months as a reminder of what I need to be practicing.

Hugs, Lauri
