My new shoes arrived and I used them yesterday at the gym -- WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Thank you so much for that suggestion, too!

Garain, there are some basic core exercises here:

Maybe that can get you started?

What great suggestions. My lower back hurts all the time too, but really kicks in on the runs....I will work more on my core as well.
Does anyone have any recommended work out for that?

Focusing on my core made a big difference in my running yesterday -- just thinking about tightening my core muscles while I ran kept my back from hurting.

I also found that running a bit faster, with a longer stride, seemed to help me. On the previous work-out I was doing more of a shuffle-jog, and I think taking longer steps kept my back a bit more stable, somehow.

This was helpful to me. I am saving for good , well, better shoes. You've given good reasons to work harder on my core.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Core work makes sense. I've been doing some on my own, but I'll add more in.

And I spent the morning researching good running shoes for me (my feet tend to rotate out, rather than in like most people's, so the requirements are a bit different). I found a pair that look great, and those will arrive tomorrow morning.

So, hopefully, my back will be happier soon!

I started running a few weeks ago using the 5K training model...4 mins walking and 1 minute running etc. I have 37lbs to lose...lost 6 so far :-) YEAH!! However, my back was a bit painful too first two weeks.....I was walking/jogging around a concrete pathway near the Cathedral which really works well for me for distance and focus...to compensate for the pain, I bought some really good shoes and added in weight training and serious abdominal work to strengthen my belly and core...these are critical to good form and running. My suggestion is you walk for a few weeks first and add in as fast a speed walk as you can for your one minute running....add in lots of abs, planks and weights...you may find, as I did, that once I became physically stronger, the back pain and kinks faded away and now I can run without pain...now if only my lungs could cope :-) KEEP ON ROCKING SWEETIE...YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I just started day 1 today (woo!). I used a treadmill at the gym, and I found that on the running segments my low back twinged.

I tend to have low back pain anyway, so it doesn't surprise me that I'm feeling it there, but should I be modifying my form in some way to help? It seemed that leaning forward a little bit helped, but I had trouble finding much else that helped.

I'm female, not in any way a runner (that is to say, I noticed my feet winging out to the side if I wasn't paying attention), and just barely obese (BMI 31).

Any other thoughts or advice?
