Thanks, MARCIA_13212, for the breathing advice! I'll give the 2-count a try on Wednesday when I do my next scheduled intervals.

Hello everyone!

I'm sitting here on my couch typing and I just finished a good CRY. I mean a really good cry (and I'm not a person that cries). I had quite an interesting blog session today and I called my husband and read him my blog. As I was reading it I started to cry. I actually had a hard time finishing it between tears. (It's a must read btw---I had quite an experience today. Get a tissue because you may relate to it A LOT!).

After I finished reading my husband said "Wow! I didn't realize how much running means to you and what it's done for you. I didn't realize what it was like for you as a kid. I've never really thought about it. Wow, honey! Thank you for reading that to me. I bet that's going to help and inspire people that read it."

He is supportive but can't relate a bunch about the childhood thing. Although he is overweight now, as a child he was thin. He was on track and ran fast. He loved to run. Ironically while I have found my inner runner, he has lost his. We talked about that a little too. I think it 'sparked' him a bit. Fortunately he never knew what it was like to be 'the fat kid'. I'm glad he didn't too. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy....well maybe....LOL! No, just kidding I wouldn't wish it on anyone EVER!

I'd love if you'd read my blog and share your thoughts with me. I'd appreciate your input.

Thank you for being here, for reading my rambles/ideas/stories. I'm glad I have supportive Spark Friends and Spark Teams. YOU guys are terrific!! Thank you for helping me find my way and letting me share my SPARK with YOU!

I had to find a "rhythm" that I could practice and eventually it became second nature. I breathe in for a 2 count and out for a 2 count and I can hear the rhythm in my breaths and in the beginning I was "thinking" the count. It adjusts when I'm going faster or breathing heavier. Hard to explain...for me I take a breath and then the 2nd count is just grabbing a little more air. I'm in an advanced 5K class right now and the subject came up this weekend...the coach said "air is free...get it however you can, but get it because your body NEEDS oxygen" He said he does in for 2 short counts and out one longer exhale because getting the oxygen in deeply enough is important. I think as long as you remain conscious about it and practice it, you'll eventually reach a point where you don't need to think about it so much.

WTG!

Breathing is an issue with many new runners. I know I struggled with it (and sometimes still struggle with it) but I can't remember how I overcame my initial problems with it.

I completed Week 4 yesterday, so I'm halfway there. The knee pain that was plaguing me in Weeks 2 and 3 has finally abated. I'm actually thinking I will be able to jog a full 5K in four more weeks! I LOVE this program!

The one thing I'm finding difficult is breathing consistently. I find that I tend to hold my breath sometimes, then have to "make up for it" later in the jog portion of the interval by breathing heavier. I try to be conscious of my breathing. Any other tips? Thanks!

todays run was so much better than yesterday--it is drizzly and about 25 degrees cooler. So the weather is better. But the big difference is that I wasn't preoccupied with life falling apart. It is a good place to be--

w4d1--Yikes! I had to take a 2 min run/3 min walk interval in the middle and add another 3 min run/2 min walk at the end. It was hot and windy and my route was not long enough so I had to loop back--not the best run ever, but I did it. That is enough to feel good about it--yes?

Zumba is my favorite crosstraining. :)

I also do a really hilly fast walk--about 5 miles. Sometimes an hour of cycling. Sometimes elliptical trainer. On a bad day, I'll do 30 minute walk on the treadmill.

Repeating weeks is fine! And most times, better if you don't feel like moving on.

Well I ran yesterday and my legs definitely felt better but I struggled a little when it came to breathing. I think I will repeat week 4 next week becuase I don't feel ready for week 5. Needing some tips for my "off days" as far as running. I am going to stick with the kickboxing classs every Saturday because that is something I love. As for the other days, I am fairly bored with the elliptical/crosstrainer these days so not sure what i should do that won't completely ware me out but will still be effective. Suggestions?

Actually it is a big deal that you did 30 instead of 20 minutes...that's 50 percent more than you needed to do...Try to track your time more accurately. The program works. Slowing your pace is also good and make sure you stretch when you are done...some people stretch before, which may help you. Cross training is good on the off days, but make sure it is something that is not straining your legs like the running does...it should be something different...I'm sure others will give you great advice too. You may want to skip tomorrow...see how you feel. You can skip 2 days, but they do not recommend skipping more than 2. See what works for you, but don't give up...you can do it.

Completed w1d1 yesterday and it was so terrible! First off, i guess i didnt pay enough attention and i ended up doing 30 min (not really a big deal). My legs felt like jello the whole time and even the 2 min was pretty rough, even though i slowed my paced. Im thinking i may have over done it last week, i worked outt every day from monday till sunday and did lots of classes in addition to my running. I have volleyball tonight but thinking about taking tomorrow off. any suggestions/tips??

I've read some articles that it is ok to run with a head cold but if the cold is in your chest, don't run. So I would think if you ran it would be ok.

However, that being said, if you're really not up to it, then don't push it. There is always tomorrow.

Take care of you first!

Marcia, I would definitely stretch. I hold my stretches for 30 seconds, and I relax into the stretch. I also only stretch warm muscles. Maybe this helps?

Queen, that is a tough thing to let go of--perfectionism. I struggle with that, myself. :) But it's so important to listen to your body, and I think you'll have more satisfaction and success that way, too. :)

Hi everyone! I'm returning to my rookie training. I took off a week but hope to start day 1 of week 2 today. I'm learning not to be a perfectionist. If it takes me 10 or 12 weeks to complete my 8 week program, that's ok! :)

Thanks for the tip, but not sure that is it...I got fitted @ an awesome running place we have here ...they have you stand barefoot and then watch you walk with no shoes on and then they make recommendations and then they watch you walk with the shoes on...I have Brooks GTS X shoes and they really do not have many miles on @ all...(I'm on week 4 outside and only wore the shoes @ the gym this winter) any other thoughts on what it could be...I was trying to figure out exactly where I'm sore and it is more like upper hamstring I think.

WTG on finishing week 4.
Were you fitted for proper running shoes? If not, get to a local running store and have them check you feet.
I can always tell when my shoes need to be changed as I will start getting hip pain in my left side.
Proper fitted shoes will make a big difference.

Just finished week 4 today :) Did not want to get going and expected a horrible 25 min, but got easier once I started. Feeling tightness in my right upper thigh in the back side about 10 min into things the last 2 days...glutes or hamstrings? Is this from not stretching enough or not enough water or poor form? I wonder why it is only my right side?

I started this training program 5 weeks ago and am on week 4 (again). I train on a treadmill with the incline at 1 (sometimes 2 but usually 1). Walk at 4 and Run at 5. I am doing week 4 one more time and then will move on to week 5. I have never been an athlete. I can't even walk and talk at the same time so this is totally new to me. I am also 46, and I want to do a 5k and then a 10k and have it be a habit before I turn 50 so I figure I might as well start now.

I am wondering when you go from 1 week to the next in the program, are you consistently at the same running speed?

I don't feel that 5 is very fast but boy it can seem tough. When I walk for exercise, I walk at 4.5 so I think I should be able to run at 5 ... Thoughts?

I finally managed to complete week 4. I had to stop everything for 2 months , first a vacation, then my right knee was swollen , still not completely healed and makes some horror movie like sounds.not to mention it doesn't seem very stable. I couldn't even walk for almost 3 weeks. I was wondering if anybody is dealing with tetany while running or exercising, it's very annoying and I don't know what to do more than taking calcium , magnesium and hydrate. and too much calcium is also bad.thanks

LOL--just wait till you do FOUR! emoticon

But it really does move quicker after awhile. 4 minutes is not so long as it was when I first hit that level.
