It is down to the elms and the decorative bushes / trees to possibly shed their leaves. The rain, the winds do not seem to be impacting these plants. The variations of purple, amber gold and hints of green in the bushes contrast strongly with those fallen leaves transforming in hues of brown into the nutriment of compost for the next season of growth.

You would think if a stand of trees lost most of its leaves that the same would be true near by; but that isn't the case. Some of the most glorious sites have been seeing the setting sun play with the shadows of leafless branches, while highlighting the drying leaves on other grand trees.

The number of leaves in healthy condition is outstanding - what a natural wonder in our world!

The rain of the year took a toll on some of the leaves. Color is a bit more subdued, but the coverage is still awe-inspiring.

I almost got blown awway this weekend, but the leaves seem to be hanging in there. Oak leaves with their fascinating curl as they mature are joining the color changers.

Parts of New England (United States) feature broad paintbrush spreads of color in bold reds and startling yellows, with pumpkin gourd oranges as dominant features. On a very recent outing, the vast stands of trees in Nova Scotia and nearby presented color panorama for continuous kilometres, interrupted by streamlets and creeks abundant with bubbling liquid, ready to overflow the banks. It is very satisfying to see the color and to hear water's activity. Somehow it makes me feel that autumn is a season of transition more than a time to be felt and enjoyed for its own sake. That, I know is just a feeling of the moment... I just find that there is so much to take in as the blend of color is so fresh and surprising each day.

The weekend of October 14-16 seems to have signalled a peak of color on trees, shrubs and vines. I am particularly impressed with the sightings in Mahone Bay and Kentville, as well as reports from places farther away.

Not only is the color fascinating, but also the formation of the leaves. There is great quantity (we all know why - the sunless May and June 2011 with the plentiful rain) of leaves, so we can expect no shortage of Fitness Minutes devoted to raking, bagging and / or mulching - composting nature's excess spring - summer wardrobe.

Monday October 10, the trees where I journeyed on a cross-county trip seemed to have turned on their color-change receptors. Wonderful reds, and broad palettes of color. Some leaves fallen, and some using the extra day off to begin what should be a long "leaf season" for composting and bagging.

Amazing foliage around Long Lake Provincial Park. If you live near a provincial or day use park, what changes have you seen? Any differences in the air?

Colors are changing on the shrubs - more subtle shades of harvest wine and deep purple.

Younger trees on municipal areas of the Capital area and the South Shore are showing bright reds with twinges of orange.

This weekend should begin a larger show of color, hue and shades.
