AUNA_VISTA, I don't think anyone on here was implying they weren't happy the criminal was caught.

However, I will debate what is considered a criminal, because during WWII Jews were considered "criminals" for merely being Jewish, and the use of DNA for something like that (hunting down specific groups of people), would be horrible.

There are a great many people that feel something that abominable could happen again. There are far too many "younger" generations that aren't even aware of what the holocaust is. If people aren't aware of their history, they are destined to repeat it.

so lighten up? I will not. I will remain diligent.

So the arguement is, how would the use of DNA be controlled?

I think using DNA that's been shared with the public to solve crimes done by a serial killer/serial rapist is a good use of the information.

The police should be doing this. It's their business to solve crimes. It's our duty as citizens to help them solve crimes. We should not be aiding and abetting anyone who would do such awful things to anyone. Hiding criminals is totally wrong! So people need to lighten up and be glad that he was caught and that DNA played a part.

I was scammed in 2016 just by answering my cell phone with my Bluetooth. They had all of my information and I just answered that I was who I am. So please everyone be careful when answering your phone, if you donít know the number donít answer. If it is important they will leave a message. In January I sent my DNA into AncestryDNA and I am glad that I did as I found several cousins that I didnít know I had.

When life hands you trouble slow down and stop to smell the roses. Life is so short, live like today is the last day of your life. Enjoy.

SCARE, tell the company the situation; in light of the news, the family members you bought the kits for won't do it and you want your money back.

To me it's no big deal as I don't believe we have any privacy any more just being on this site our info is out there.

I ordered kits for my mother and brother to be tested now they say no way in the world will they so I spent money before the news broke about what happened ugh!

I really think it was OK to use the DNA database to get the serial killer. I know that many people will disagree with me & that's OK.

DNA can be used to evaluate risks for many conditions. Learning about these can help a couple decide whether to have children who might be impacted. Insurance companies may not want the liability. Even employers may not want an individual with certain markers. Discrimination and proving discrimination are two different things.

I'm glad the "you know what" was caught, BUT I know a great many people, family and friends who have decided whole heartedly won't get their DNA done, because of the lack of privacy and no control of what is done with that DNA afterwards.

Have mine out there. Sandy as you know I'm hoping someone does match mine.
I use to work at a collection agency. My boss liked to show off for clients as to how much info he could get on people, with just a little info. So it's out there I don't think your DNA is private

No problem with me on it.

My DNA is not marked private - is anybody's? I think Ancestry explains that it compares and explores all the matches it sends us and none are private.

Jackie I'm a Halloween baby but many years ago.

Summer: Minesota
Winter: Arizona (as of Dec. '08)

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

I have no problem with DNA being used to solve cold case's. IMO there is no privacy with all of the technicalogy that's out there. We are already tracked by cell phones we use and credit cards we use etc part of living in the 21st century.

I suppose it is a moral dilemma to a certain extent People are certainly having some strong opinions about it. : Does it bother you or are you OK with it? What is IT?

Earlier this week, authorities caught a serial killer who had eluded them for many years. What the IT is, they used a genealogical DNA database to solve it.

In reading comments made in various genealogical groups I belong to, the opinions were at both ends of the spectrum but not really in the center. One person decided that she no longer wanted to be involved in genealogy & DNA if they were going to use it for things like that. Others states that if you weren't a serial killer why would you be worried about it?

My question to you is this - was it OK for them to use genealogical DNA sites to catch him? Do you feel that it was an invasion of privacy?
