I know a lot of people who will not do a DNA testing for privacy reasons. We don't know what these companies do with our DNA.

The following is a quote from DNAeXplained - Genetic Genealogy
dna-explained.com/2018/02/18/unexpec
te
d-discoveries-through-dna-testing/

"Everyone who takes a DNA test for genetic genealogy may encounter two situations:

Discovering a close family member that you didn’t know existed previously
Discovering that you are not related to close family members

Of course, neither may happen, but either or both could.

It’s a double-edged sword. Plain and simple, do not test if you’re not OK with these possibilities. But please, read on about why you might just want to take that plunge."

No surprises, but a sad story that I thought was a rumor but found out more in my search.

In the early 1900's one couple had 3 small children, then the wife died in childbirth of a 4th child which left the father with 4 children under 7 and no way of knowing how to handle the situation so he gave away the 4th child.

His family and other adults were outraged over this (but, were not there to help him at the time). So he was the black sheep of his family. He moved to a western state, remarried and I haven't found where all the children ended up yet.

Jackie I'm a Halloween baby but many years ago.

Winter: Arizona (as of Dec. '08)

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

In high school biology my class did a study on blood types and the teacher told me I could not be the offspring of my two parents. Okay. was basically my response. I don't know what my grade was, but I gave him the information my mother gave me. I'd love to say I'd be intrigued to find out one of my parents isn't, but I look too much like both of them.

I am interested to find out more about my bio father's side of the family in Louisiana though. I know anyone born with my surname is a relative, because it's that rare.

In my family the surprise was me as I was placed for adoption as an infant. My biological mother's mother told the whole extended family "The baby died; so sad" as I was born out of wedlock - what a disgrace. Eventually my mother did tell her children, so my appearance was not such a surprise. My biological father did not know I existed because my mother never told him she was pregnant. When a sister popped up on Ancestry DNA I had to explain who I was and how I got there. Interesting outcome side note: the sisters on both sides have been welcoming and we stay in touch, though some more than others. The brothers on both sides aren't exactly antagonistic; they just ignore me. I think they figure they already have enough girls in the family. You really do have to be ready for surprises when you get into the genealogy business.

My DD is a nurse, she has had this problem for years. A sick child needs an organ transplant or sometimes just blood. When they look to see if the parents are a match the father isn't the Childs father. Now what do you tell the already grieving father?

Objects in the mirror will get thinner than they now appear

Genealogy Tip of the Day
If Surprises are Going to Upset You…

Posted: 29 Jan 2018 09:36 AM PST

A DNA test for genealogical purposes can result in one or more surprises. Sometimes those surprises impact more than the tester–they can impact other living family members as well. Not all surprises are about relatives who have been dead for a hundred years. You could discover that a parent or grandparent had a relationship (and a resulting child) with someone you do not know.

Non-genealogists in your family may be impacted by this discovery.

A “surprise” cousin could result in a similar fashion if an aunt or uncle had a child that no one knows about. Other living family members may not even know about that child. It is very possible the father may not even know the child exists.

Many people find no modern “surprises” in their DNA results. Some do. Those surprises may not even come immediately. That unknown cousin may not perform a genealogical DNA test until years after you have done yours.
