Labor Day! The name says it all! that's what my dad used to say. We never cooked out. We never did anything relaxing or celebratory on Labor Day. Labor Day (according to Dad) is a day given to us by the government to have off of work (dad was a military man) so that we can weatherize our home and get the yard and home ready for winter. It is the one day that the whole family works the hardest to get stuff done. We had to scrub lawn furniture and the picnic table and get them put inside for winter. We had to wash windows and scrub siding. We had to clean and declog any gutters (which would be repeated after the leaves fell) we would check on the heat tape around the pipes under the house and in the barn. We would cut and split and stack wood. I canNOT even begin to tell you what all we would do. It started on Friday after school and he worked us all weekend. It was crazy. It wasn't until I was in high school and got invited to another person's house for a cookout that I discovered that other families took it easy on LABOR DAY.

I did NOT continue my dad's tradition on Labor Day but now that the kids are grown and gone I wish I would have. It was a good thing that built character and a great work ethic in me. I love you dad and miss you very much!

The first time Labor Day was observed in the United STates was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland made the first Monday in September the official Labor Day, a national holiday. Labor Day is also observed in Canada.

What does Labor Day mean to you? Why do we have Labor Day in your families tradition/eyes? How did you celebrate it growing up and do you still celebrate in the same way today with your own family?
